Giving Tuesday Advocates Toolkit

Give to Kalamazoo CollegeAdvocates are Class Agents who serve as volunteers to increase support for Kalamazoo College Fund. Thank you for your leadership in promoting Kalamazoo College on Giving Tuesday, which takes place December 1, 2020.

To ensure scholarships, faculty resources and a continued K experience for students during these challenging times, our hope is that alumni will continue to participate by making a gift on the day. The goal for 125 young alumni (from the class years 2005-2019) to join in supporting their alma matter on Giving Tuesday.

Advocate Responsibilities

Through social media, email and/or phone, Advocates ask their peers to make a gift on Giving Tuesday and make them aware of this opportunity in the days leading up to Giving Tuesday. Advocates are asked to offer a match with their gift to encourage their peers to give. After gifts are made, we ask that donors are thanked for their gifts.

Three Easy Steps to Help Get You Started

Kalamazoo College uses the GiveCampus social fundraising platform. As an Advocate, we encourage you to create a GiveCampus account to track outreach and help make your strategy more effective. Here’s how to get started:

  1. Go to givecampus.com/KalamazooCollege and click on ‘Sign Up’ in the top right corner of the page. If you already have an account please skip to step 3.
  2.  Create an account by linking to your Facebook account or using your email. Linking to your Facebook account is easy and if you are already logged into Facebook, you won’t need an additional password to log into your GiveCampus account. If you use your email address, be sure to check for a confirmation email message.
  3. Now that you’ve logged into GiveCampus, select the Kalamazoo College Fund #GivingTuesday campaign.

How and When to Share the Giving Page

GiveCampus provides buttons which allow you to conveniently share the campaign URL in a tweet, text or email to your K friends and classmates. While logged in, the URL you pick up from these buttons contains special tracking that is connected to your account.

This allows you to view how many times someone clicked on the Giving Tuesday link you shared and how many people made a gift as a result of your advocacy This will be seen in the Advocates tab of the page once you have created a matching gift. It will update throughout the day as you generate more link clicks and gifts.

How to Create a Matching Gift

Day of Gracious Giving screen shot

As an Advocate you can further inspire your classmates and alumni friends by creating a matching gift. To create one, go to the Giving Tuesday campaign page and click on the ‘offer a matching gift’ button on the left side of the screen below the campaign video.

Matching gifts are made on a perdonor or perdollar basis (e.g. I will match up to $500 on a dollar-for-dollar basis for the next $500 that is donated to the Class of 1980 -or- I will match $20 per donor from the Class of 2005). We recommend keeping your match as simple as possible.

Be sure to select the affiliation, class year or list of friends your match is intended for. For example, you can choose an affiliation group such as ‘alumni,’ a class year or specific individuals by email. If you do not choose one the match will be available to everyone who makes a gift.

In addition to your matching gift you also have the option to create a ‘Challenge.’ These are milestone-based (e.g. if 100 people donate, I will give $250). Please note that Challenges are open to everyone and cannot be restricted to your class.

For more information on creating a matching gift, please review the Tutorial Video below.
