  • 6 p.m., Family Science Night, Dow Science Center: Students from across campus will run hands-on science booths for all ages to enjoy. Activities will range from computer science to chemistry for all to enjoy. Children younger than 18 must be accompanied by an adult. The event and parking are free and open to the public.

Wednesday, May 6

  • 4:15 p.m., Thompson Lecture in Religion, Olmsted Room at Mandelle Hall: Drawing from her ongoing ethnographic research in Barcelona, Spain, Emilia Bachrach of Oberlin College considers how South Asian Hindu and Muslim women build social and economic networks while also navigating minority and minoritized religious status.

Thursday, May 7

  • 6 p.m., Kalamazoo Institute of Art: Visiting Assistant Professor of Art James Denison will explore the artwork of Edward Hopper in a lecture from 6–7 p.m. Thursday, May 7, at the Kalamazoo Institute of Arts (KIA). Denison, a postdoctoral fellow at KIA, will consider the use of fashion in Hopper’s paintings of urban American life, interpreting his simplified representations of clothes as a strategy crucial to the sense of isolation and emotional restraint often associated with his work. Tuesday, May 12

  • 7 p.m., Kitchen Lecture, Dewing Hall, Room 103: P. Gavin LaRose of the University of Michigan will discuss Discrete Population Models, Cobwebs and Chaos. The talk will investigate a population of creatures such as bacteria or insects and model what it would do. Attendees can expect to find some mathematical cobwebs, surprises and chaos.
