  • 4:15 p.m.: In a workshop, Nellie Jo David of Earlham College will focus on sharing a baseline understanding of how to engage with indigenous communities. David will review and discuss practices that can lead to meaningful relationships with these native communities. Dinner will be provided. RSVP here.   • 5 p.m.:, American Studies speaker Mitch Kachun, will give a talk titled “Constructing Revolutionary ‘Heroes’: Crispus Attucks and Chief Tacky in the U.S. and Jamaica” based on his recent book. Olmsted Room at Mandelle Hall.

Thursday, May 2

  • 4:15 p.m.: Join the Department of Religion for the 2024 Armstrong Lecture in Religion in the Olmsted Room at Mandelle Hall. This year’s guest speaker is Eziaku Atuama Nwokoch, an assistant professor at the University of Miami in Florida. She is a scholar of Africana religions with expertise in the ethnographic study of Vodou in Haiti and the Haitian diaspora. Her research is grounded in gender and sexuality studies, visual and material culture and Africana Studies. Her lecture, “What Do the Gods Want?” will explore the embodied sartorial practices of Haitian Vodou that are produced and transformed within transnational communities in the African Diaspora. Nwokocha will address how fashion in the religious and social life of Vodou accentuates the importance of aesthetic trends to communal identity formation in the African Diaspora.
