Campaign Specifics

Why a campaign and why now?

In March 2018, the Board of Trustees approved a new five-year strategic plan, “Advancing Kalamazoo College: A Strategic Vision for 2023.” This plan envisions that K will be known as one of the nation’s top residential liberal arts colleges for integrating academic rigor with life-changing experiential education in a values-driven community.

To realize this vision, the College will invigorate the K-Plan through continued innovation; enhance the bonds of community between students, faculty, staff and alumni; strive to match K’s campus to the excellence of its people; and continue to build an endowment that will support these priorities and sustain Kalamazoo College for years to come.

Successfully implementing these strategic priorities requires your philanthropic support. With it, we will strengthen the College’s ability to fulfill its mission with distinction and, as President Gonzalez indicated in his inaugural address, prepare K graduates to bring a brighter light to the world.

What is the goal of the Brighter Light Campaign?

To raise at least $150 million, with a strong focus on growing the endowment, by the end of 2023.

What kind of gifts will be counted in the campaign?

This is a comprehensive campaign, meaning all gifts, multi-year commitments, realized estate gifts and planned giving intentions received by the conclusion of the campaign will be counted toward the goal.

Endowment

What’s the difference between endowed and current-use funds?

Kalamazoo College’s endowment supplies a permanent stream of income to support our liberal arts mission. An endowed fund is invested for the long-term—with only a small percentage being spent each year—and lends financial stability to the institution.

Current-use funds, like the Kalamazoo College Fund and the Hornet Athletic Association, provide immediate resources for our mission-based priorities supporting students, faculty and day-to-day operational needs.

Making a Gift

How can I support the Brighter Light Campaign?

Making a gift online is the fastest way to support the campaign. You can also support the campaign with a check or cash, securities, a qualified charitable distribution from your IRA, a planned gift and sharing an estate intention. Learn more about the different ways to give to K.

Can I specify my gift to a certain area?

Yes, you can specify your gift to a specific fund, department, or campaign priority. Not sure what to support? Consider an unrestricted gift to the Kalamazoo College Fund allowing the College to address the most pressing needs of our students, faculty and campus infrastructure.

Can my planned giving intention for the College be included in the Brighter Light Campaign?

Yes, estate and other planned giving intentions are encouraged and count toward the campaign goal. You can make a planned gift by including K in your will or trust, naming the College as a beneficiary of your retirement account or life insurance policy, or making a gift that provides income, like a charitable gift annuity.

Please let K know of your intentions by contacting Senior Associate Director of Planned Giving, Matthew Brosco, Esq. at 269.337.7236 or mbrosco@kzoo.edu.
