Academic Advising
Academic advisors serve as mentors and guides in students’ academic planning and progress toward degree completion. Advisors help students clarify their goals, develop plans compatible with their interests and abilities, understand and meet degree requirements, and make informed decisions about their coursework and educational opportunities, including on- and off-campus study and experiences. All students are required to meet with their advisor prior to registration each term. New students are assigned an advisor and begin working with them during orientation. Students typically remain with their initial advisor until declaring a major sophomore year, at which point they may opt to choose an advisor in their major department. Departmental Student Advisors (DSAs) are student leaders who provide perspective on majors, minors, and concentrations.
Early Alert
Kalamazoo College maintains an Early Alert system to support student academic success. Faculty and staff are encouraged to submit an Early Alert when they have concerns about a student’s academic progress, attendance, or engagement. Academic advisors receive Early Alert notifications for their advisees and follow-up as appropriate. The Early Alert Committee, composed of academic and student development administrators, meets regularly to review reports and coordinate additional outreach and support.
K Care Team
CARE stands for Campus Assessment, Response, and Evaluation. The CARE team is a collaborative, multidisciplinary group that works together to identify, assess, and support community members who are struggling or are engaging in concerning behaviors. Our goal is to intervene, assist, and provide comprehensive support to students experiencing challenges and/or exhibiting threatening or concerning behaviors. Students with Disabilities
In compliance with section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973, as Amended, and with the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990 (ADA), Kalamazoo College recognizes that qualified students who have diagnosed or identified learning, physical, and emotional disabilities are entitled to the same benefits from the educational programs of the College. Kalamazoo College is committed to making every effort to providing reasonable accommodations, unless it that imposes an undue hardship or burden on the College. The Dean of Students and the student will work together to negotiate and ensure appropriate accommodations that will work for the student. Cost associated with diagnosis, evaluation, and testing is the responsibility of the student, except in cases of severe financial need demonstrated to, and upon recommendation of, the Dean of Students. The office also makes assistance available to students experiencing short-term illness or physical injury.
