April 24, 2008 -- KALAMAZOO COLLEGE CELEBRATES 175th ANNIVERSARY

KALAMAZOO (Mich.) – Kalamazoo College officials announced today that the College will celebrate two major milestones in 2008: the 175th anniversary of its founding and the 50th anniversary of its pioneering study abroad program.
The College community will celebrate both anniversaries in a series of events held this spring and during the 2008-2009 academic year that begins in the fall. (more)

April 22, 2008 -- Kalamazoo College Receives $1 Million Grant From the Howard Hughes Medical Institute

KALAMAZOO, Mich. – Kalamazoo College has received a $1 million grant from the Howard Hughes Medical Institute (HHMI) to expand its science students’ research opportunities, enhance their classroom experiences, and support their service-learning outreach to K-12 students in Kalamazoo Public Schools (KPS) and elsewhere. April 8, 2008 -- KALAMAZOO COLLEGE WILL OFFER B.A. DEGREES IN BUSINESS

KALAMAZOO, Mich. -- Kalamazoo College officials announced today that students pursuing business careers will soon be able to do so with a Bachelor of Arts degree in business. College faculty recently voted unanimously to add a business major to the catalog for the 2008-2009 academic year beginning in September. (more)

February 22, 2008 -- Kalamazoo College Names New Provost

KALAMAZOO, MICH – Kalamazoo College President Eileen Wilson-Oyelaran announced today that Michael A. “Mickey” McDonald, Ph.D., will become the new Provost at Kalamazoo College, effective July 1. (more)

October 30, 2007 -- Five Kalamazoo College Students Receive Fulbright Scholarships
Kalamazoo College Named a Top Producer of U.S. Fulbright Students

KALAMAZOO, Mich.: Oct. 30, 2007 — Kalamazoo College officials announced today that five of its former students have received prestigious Fulbright U.S. Student Scholarships.

With five scholarships, Kalamazoo College ranked among the top 20 liberal arts colleges nationally with students receiving Fulbright U.S. Student Scholarships. All are using their scholarships to study abroad during the current academic year. (more)

October 2, 2007 -- Kalamazoo College to Bestow Annual Alumni Awards

KALAMAZOO, MICH – On Friday, October 12, during its Homecoming festivities, Kalamazoo College will bestow special awards upon two alumni—Julie Mehretu, Class of 1992, and Jack Lundeen, Class of 1969—and two retired faculty members—Paul and Sally Olexia, biology and health sciences, respectively. The College also will induct four individuals and four teams into its Athletic Hall of Fame. They are: Linda (Topolsky) Simpson, Class of 1986, tennis; Kory Kramer, Class of 1999, cross-country; MaryJane Valade, Class of 2001, basketball; Nicholas Duda, Class of 2002, swimming; the 1940 men’s tennis team; the 1949 men’s tennis team; the 1962 football team; and the 1969 women’s tennis team. September 10, 2007 -- Kalamazoo College Commits to Climate Neutral Campus

Kalamazoo, Mich. – Kalamazoo College President Eileen B. Wilson-Oyelaran committed to sharply reducing and eventually eliminating all of the College’s global warming emissions by signing the American College & University Presidents Climate Commitment (ACUPCC). She joins the leaders of 347 other institutions across the country and becomes the second Michigan college president to sign the document. (more)

June 29, 2007 -- Mark Riley Named Men’s Tennis Coach/Asst. Tournament Director at Kalamazoo College

Mark Riley has been named Kalamazoo College’s head men’s tennis coach and assistant director of the USTA Boys’ 18 & 16 National Championships. Mark’s head coaching duties will begin immediately. He will work closely with Timon Corwin on this year’s tournament, and become director of the 2008 tournament.

“I never thought when I was playing on the Hornet tennis team that I would one day be the coach and carry on the legacy of Allen Stowe and George Acker and, most recently, Timon Corwin,” said Riley. “The storied traditions of Kalamazoo College, both in tennis and academics, and the USTA Boy’s National Championships have been the highlights of many outstanding careers and a source of pride for the community of Kalamazoo. I am honored to take this role and help carry forward those traditions.” (more)

May 11, 2007 -- Kalamazoo College Presents Lucasse Award for Excellence in Teaching

KALAMAZOO, MI—The Lucasse Selection Committee has unanimously recommended that the 2006-2007 Florence J. Lucasse Fellowship Award for Excellence in Teaching be conferred upon Robert Stauffer, professor of sociology and anthropology at Kalamazoo College, in recognition of his outstanding teaching and work in pedagogy. The award will be presented after a lecture by Robert Stauffer, “The Effervescence of Intellectual Talk,” at 8 p.m. on Monday, May 21, in the Olmsted Room, Mandelle Hall, Kalamazoo College. A dessert reception at 7:30 p.m. will include a citation by John Wickstrom, professor of history. The award will be presented by President Eileen Wilson-Oyelaran. The event is free and open to the public. (more)

May 9, 2007 -- Honorary Degree Recipient Pays May Visit to Kalamazoo College

KALAMAZOO, MI—Kalamazoo College will host three appearances by renowned activist, writer, and speaker Grace Lee Boggs. At 7 p.m. on Wednesday, May 16, in Room 226 of the Dow Science Building, she will give a talk titled “Toward a Paradigm Shift in Education,” and at 11:30 a.m. on Thursday, May 17, in Dalton Theatre, her topic will be “Another World is Necessary.” Both events are free and open to the public. On June 10, during the College’s Commencement ceremony, Boggs will receive an Honorary Doctor of Humane Letters degree from Kalamazoo College. (more)

April 20, 2007 -- Human Sacrifice in Antiquity: Visiting Scholar at Kalamazoo College

KALAMAZOO, MI—University of California – Los Angeles (UCLA) classicist and archaeologist, Sarah Morris, will be speaking at Kalamazoo College as the Phi Beta Kappa Visiting Scholar of 2007. Her lecture, titled “Isaac and Iphigenia: Human Sacrifice in Antiquity,” will be at 8 p.m. on Thursday, April 26, in the Olmsted Room, Mandelle Hall, at Kalamazoo College. April 13, 2007 -- Festival Playhouse Presents The Madwoman of Chaillot

KALAMAZOO, MI – Festival Playhouse of Kalamazoo College closes its 43rd season, “Stories Staged,” with THE MADWOMAN OF CHAILLOT, by Jean Giradoux, May 17-20 at Nelda K. Balch Playhouse. Tickets on Thursday night are only $1.00, but must be purchased at the door. Tickets for the Friday, Saturday and Sunday performances are $15 for adults and $10 for seniors and students. April 12, 2007 -- Hands Across Kalamazoo: Eastside Neighborhood Association and Kalamazoo College

KALAMAZOO, MI—West meets east when a class of students from Kalamazoo College cross the city of Kalamazoo to join hands and work together with Eastside neighborhood residents. The goal: an improved and revitalized community. Kalamazoo College and the Eastside Neighborhood Association (ESNA) have partnered to build an Eastside Neighborhood Development Initiative: a mission to provide needed services for the Eastside community to ensure a safe and attractive place to live and work. The idea was first envisioned by Pastor Milton Wells of Open Door Ministries, along with Frank Barrett, president of the Eastside Neighborhood Association Board of Directors, and brought to Pat Taylor, director of ESNA, to bring to fruition. The initiative was then proposed to Kalamazoo College, where 25 students (mostly juniors) in Professor of Anthropology Kiran Cunningham’s “Qualitative Research Methods” class took on the project. Interviews of Eastside residents are underway and will be conducted over the next eight weeks by teams of Kalamazoo College students and neighborhood residents. (more)

April 10, 2007 -- Renowned Professor/Chemist/Researcher at Kalamazoo College

KALAMAZOO, MI—Dr. Carolyn Bertozzi will be giving the Kalamazoo College 2007 Tourtellotte Lecture at 7 p.m. on Monday, April 16, in the Light Fine Arts Building on Academy Street. Bertozzi’s presentation is titled, “Chemistry in Living Systems: New Tools for Probing the Glycome.” The lecture is free and open to the public. (more)

April 9, 2007 -- Spring Performance Series Features Two One-Act Plays

KALAMAZOO, MI– Showcasing the work of Kalamazoo’s “best and brightest” students, the Senior Performance Series features student directed one-act plays. The spring semester will feature THE AMERICAN DREAM, written by Edward Albee and directed by Whitney Shattuck, and MINNESOTA MOON, written by John Olive and directed by Paul Whitehouse. “For the first time we have exclusively featured two juniors as directors in our Senior Performance Series, but Whitney and Paul are certainly up to the task,” said Theatre Arts professor Ed Menta. Both plays will run May 4-5 at 8pm and May 6 at 2pm in the Dungeon Theatre, located in the Kalamazoo College Light Fine Arts Building on the lower level. General Admission tickets are $5 at the door. April 4, 2007 -- Donut Day Premieres at the Little Theatre at Western Michigan University

KALAMAZOO, MI—A short documentary about a local business, Donut Day, produced and directed by local filmmakers Amy Levine and Dhera Strauss will premiere with two showings at 7 p.m. and 9 p.m. on Friday, April 27, 2007, at the Little Theatre at Western Michigan University. The screenings are open to the public with a suggested donation of $3.00 per ticket. Question and answer sessions with the filmmakers follow each showing, as do receptions with coffee and donuts—of course! (more)

March 30, 2007 -- Festival Playhouse Announces its 2007-2008 Season

KALAMAZOO, MI – The Theatre Arts Department of Kalamazoo College presents the 44th season of Festival Playhouse, featuring some of the greatest plays ever written, all combining themes of wellness and social justice--thus the season's title: "Just as Well: Seeking Wellness Through the Ties That Bind Us." The main stage performances include an all-female version of Shakespeare’s most famous tragedy, Hamlet. In collaboration with The Whole Art Theatre, the Festival Playhouse presents the Mid-western premiere of Well, by Broadway playwright, actress, and Kalamazoo College alumna Lisa Kron. That production will feature guest artist and professional actress Sharon Williams. Finally, guest artist Rebecca Patterson, artistic director of The Queens Company in New York City, will direct Tony Kushner’s Angels in America, Part One: Millennium Approaches. And that's not all. The Dungeon Theatre will house performances of Samuel Beckett’s classic existential comedy, Waiting for Godot, Eric Bogosian’s contemporary American drama, SubUrbia, and the annual Senior Performance Series of student directed one-act plays. March 15, 2007 -- Kalamazoo College President Joins State Department Delegation on Trip to India

KALAMAZOO, MI—The State Department announced today that Karen P. Hughes, the under secretary for public diplomacy and public affairs, will lead a delegation of six American university leaders that will include the president of Kalamazoo College on a weeklong trip to Mumbai and New Delhi, India, on March 24-30, 2007. It is the second in a series of high-profile tours to promote American higher education overseas. Margaret Spellings, the secretary of education, led the first tour last November, to China, South Korea, and Japan. (more)

February 22, 2007 -- Kalamazoo College and Loaves & Fishes Will Fill Empty Bowls

KALAMAZOO, MI—Kalamazoo College and Kalamazoo Loaves and Fishes, together with the many willing hands of bowl-makers and soup chefs throughout greater Kalamazoo, are coming together to fill the empty bowls of the hungry in our community while raising awareness about hunger worldwide. The second annual Empty Bowls Fundraiser will take place from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Saturday, March 10, at Woodward Elementary School, 606 Stuart Avenue in Kalamazoo. Tickets are $15 and for that entry fee, each person will receive a ceramic bowl and a meal of soup and bread. Student tickets are $10 and children under 6 enter free. The face value of the tickets is not tax-deductible, but additional donations at the door are appreciated. All proceeds from the event will be used by Kalamazoo Loaves and Fishes to assist the hungry in our community. (more)

February 15, 2007 -- Pianist Mascolo-David to Perform at Kalamazoo College

KALAMAZOO, MI—Pianist Alexandra Mascolo-David will present a recital of works by Brazilian composer Francisco Mignone, whose works she has recently released on CD. The concert will take place at the Dalton Theatre on the Kalamazoo College campus at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, February 21. The concert is free and open to the public. (more)
