They are joined by professors Regina Stevens-Truss and Laura Furge.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>About 225 undergraduates from across the country participated in Experimental Biology&#8217;s poster competition in the categories of:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>proteins and enzymes;<\/li>\n<li>metabolism, bioenergetics, lipids and signal transduction;<\/li>\n<li>DNA, RNA, chromosomes and gene regulation; and<\/li>\n<li>cell and developmental biology.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Sarah Glass \u201917, of Shelbyville, Mich., was awarded first place in the \u201cproteins and enzymes\u201d posters category and received an award of $500. Raoul Wadhwa \u201917 \u2013 originally from Portage, Mich., and now of Chicago \u2013 earned honorable mention recognition in \u201cproteins and enzymes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The event is a joint meeting of six different societies including the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.asbmb.org\/\">American Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology (ASBMB)<\/a> as well as societies for physiology, nutrition, pharmacology, pathology and anatomy.<\/p>\n<p>Glass said the meeting was a great opportunity to find out what\u2019s going on in science and to practice presenting research. She is a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kzoo.edu\/programs\/chemistry\/\">chemistry major<\/a> who will pursue a Ph.D. starting this fall at Vanderbilt University.<\/p>\n<p>Glass presented research associated with her <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kzoo.edu\/k-plan\/sip\/\">Senior Individualized Project (SIP)<\/a>. She investigated enzymes in the human liver that help process medicines, work that may become relevant in predicting how individuals will respond to their medications.<\/p>\n<p>In contrast to Glass, it might seem strange that Wadhwa, a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kzoo.edu\/programs\/mathematics\/\">math major<\/a>, not only participated but earned honors in an event largely attended by chemistry and biology majors. However, this project \u2013 which also was his SIP \u2013 united his interdisciplinary interests in <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kzoo.edu\/programs\/computer-science\/\">computer science<\/a>, math, biology and chemistry.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_8839\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-8839\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-8839\" src=\"\/\/www.kzoo.edu\/news\/files\/2017\/05\/Experimental-Biology-Meeting-in-Chicago-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"Experimental Biology Meeting in Chicago\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.kzoo.edu\/news\/files\/2017\/05\/Experimental-Biology-Meeting-in-Chicago-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.kzoo.edu\/news\/files\/2017\/05\/Experimental-Biology-Meeting-in-Chicago-150x113.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.kzoo.edu\/news\/files\/2017\/05\/Experimental-Biology-Meeting-in-Chicago-600x450.jpg 600w, https:\/\/www.kzoo.edu\/news\/files\/2017\/05\/Experimental-Biology-Meeting-in-Chicago-400x300.jpg 400w, https:\/\/www.kzoo.edu\/news\/files\/2017\/05\/Experimental-Biology-Meeting-in-Chicago.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-8839\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">K students Christi Cho, Sarah Glass, Raoul Wadhwa, Cydney Martell, Jacqueline Mills, Sharat Kamath and Susmitha Narisetty joined professors Laura Furge and Regina Stevens-Truss at the annual Experimental Biology meeting in Chicago.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cSomething like this could only happen at K,\u201d he said, adding he owes a \u201cthank you\u201d to chemistry professors <a href=\"https:\/\/reason.kzoo.edu\/chem\/faculty\/regina\/\">Regina Stevens-Truss<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/reason.kzoo.edu\/chem\/faculty\/laura\/\">Laura Furge<\/a>. Their guidance helped him inside and outside the lab, especially as they coached him in professionally presenting scientific research. \u201cThis would never have happened at a big university.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Wadhwa described his research as still being a ways off from clinical application, although he was looking at a new class of potential drug therapies that in some ways are similar to antibiotics. He helped develop software used to predict the antibacterial potential of peptides being studied in Truss\u2019s lab, work that could one day prove vital in this age of antibiotic resistance. Wadhwa will attend the Cleveland Clinic\u2019s Lerner College of Medicine at Case Western University starting this fall.<\/p>\n<p>Other K representatives included chemistry majors Christi Cho \u201917, Jacqueline Mills \u201918 and Cydney Martell \u201919; along with biology majors Sharat Kamath \u201918 and Susmitha Narisetty \u201919. students attended the annual Experimental Biology meeting in Chicago in May including two honored in the event\u2019s undergraduate research posters competition.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_8837\" src=\"\/\/www.kzoo.edu\/news\/files\/2017\/05\/Experimental-Biology-Posters-Competition-300x400.jpg\" alt=\"Experimental Biology Posters Competition\" width=\"300\" height=\"400\" \/><figcaption They are joined by professors Regina Stevens-Truss and Laura Furge.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>About 225 undergraduates from across the country participated in Experimental Biology&#8217;s poster competition in the categories of:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>proteins and enzymes;<\/li>\n<li>metabolism, bioenergetics, lipids and signal transduction;<\/li>\n<li>DNA, RNA, chromosomes and gene regulation; and<\/li>\n<li>cell and developmental biology.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Sarah Glass \u201917, of Shelbyville, Mich., was awarded first place in the \u201cproteins and enzymes\u201d posters category and received an award of $500. Raoul Wadhwa \u201917 \u2013 originally from Portage, Mich., and now of Chicago \u2013 earned honorable mention recognition in \u201cproteins and enzymes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The event is a joint meeting of six different societies including the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.asbmb.org\/\">American Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology (ASBMB)<\/a> as well as societies for physiology, nutrition, pharmacology, pathology and anatomy.<\/p>\n<p>Glass said the meeting was a great opportunity to find out what\u2019s going on in science and to practice presenting research. She is a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kzoo.edu\/programs\/chemistry\/\">chemistry major<\/a> who will pursue a Ph.D. starting this fall at Vanderbilt University.<\/p>\n<p>Glass presented research associated with her <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kzoo.edu\/k-plan\/sip\/\">Senior Individualized Project (SIP)<\/a>. She investigated enzymes in the human liver that help process medicines, work that may become relevant in predicting how individuals will respond to their medications.<\/p>\n<p>In contrast to Glass, it might seem strange that Wadhwa, a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kzoo.edu\/programs\/mathematics\/\">math major<\/a>, not only participated but earned honors in an event largely attended by chemistry and biology majors. However, this project \u2013 which also was his SIP \u2013 united his interdisciplinary interests in <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kzoo.edu\/programs\/computer-science\/\">computer science<\/a>, math, biology and chemistry.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_8839\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-8839\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-8839\" src=\"\/\/www.kzoo.edu\/news\/files\/2017\/05\/Experimental-Biology-Meeting-in-Chicago-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"Experimental Biology Meeting in Chicago\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-8839\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">K students Christi Cho, Sarah Glass, Raoul Wadhwa, Cydney Martell, Jacqueline Mills, Sharat Kamath and Susmitha Narisetty joined professors Laura Furge and Regina Stevens-Truss at the annual Experimental Biology meeting in Chicago.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cSomething like this could only happen at K,\u201d he said, adding he owes a \u201cthank you\u201d to chemistry professors <a href=\"https:\/\/reason.kzoo.edu\/chem\/faculty\/regina\/\">Regina Stevens-Truss<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/reason.kzoo.edu\/chem\/faculty\/laura\/\">Laura Furge<\/a>. Their guidance helped him inside and outside the lab, especially as they coached him in professionally presenting scientific research. \u201cThis would never have happened at a big university.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Wadhwa described his research as still being a ways off from clinical application, although he was looking at a new class of potential drug therapies that in some ways are similar to antibiotics. He helped develop software used to predict the antibacterial potential of peptides being studied in Truss\u2019s lab, work that could one day prove vital in this age of antibiotic resistance. Wadhwa will attend the Cleveland Clinic\u2019s Lerner College of Medicine at Case Western University starting this fall.<\/p>\n<p>Other K representatives included chemistry majors Christi Cho \u201917, Jacqueline Mills \u201918 and Cydney Martell \u201919; along with biology majors Sharat Kamath \u201918 and Susmitha Narisetty \u201919.
