Add \u2018em up: FOUR teams of Kalamazoo College students finished among the top 10 at the 2012 Lower Michigan Mathematics Competition, with one K team bringing home the top prize. The three-hour competition held April 14 at Calvin College in Grand Rapids pitted multiple teams from 10 colleges against each other.<\/p>\n

The ten-question exam \u201cinvolved all branches of mathematics that undergraduates are familiar with,\u201d said Rosemary K. Brown Professor of Mathematics and Computer Science\u00a0John Fink<\/strong>, who accompanied the teams to the competition. He said unlike other colleges, K teams don\u2019t practice before competitions because of their busy schedules.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s like pickup soccer to them,\u201d Fink said of his students, \u201cExcept they are people who like to play recreational mathematics.\u201d<\/p>\n

The K team of\u00a0Dan Esman \u201912<\/strong>,\u00a0Trung Hoang \u201912<\/strong>,\u00a0Hang Nguyen \u201914<\/strong>\u00a0took first place with a perfect score of 100. It\u2019s the second straight year a K team has brought home the top trophy.\u00a0Jinyuan Huang \u201914<\/strong>,Renjie Song \u201913<\/strong>, and\u00a0Jiakan Wang \u201913<\/strong>, finished third.\u00a0Utsav Adhikari \u201914<\/strong>,\u00a0Sajan Silwal \u201914<\/strong>, and\u00a0Mojtaba Tafti \u201915<\/strong>\u00a0finished sixth.
