Conference scheduled for Oct. 20-23 on the K campus in Kalamazoo, Mich. Journalist and author Naomi Klein will be among a panel of distinguished conference participants. She will deliver the keynote address on the evening of Oct. 21.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis conference aims to confront and provoke the notion that the current nadir of austerity, violence and ascent of the global one-percent is normal and the best we humans can do,\u201d said Brock. \u201cWe intend to bring together people whose work envisions an imaginative, robust, plentiful and just future.\u201d<\/p>\n

According to Brock, confirmed conference participants thus far include:<\/p>\n

– Political scientist Simon Akindes<\/strong>;
\n– Actor, singer, writer and composer Daniel Beatty<\/strong>;
\n– Author and political scientist Peter Bratsis<\/strong>;
\n– Science fiction writer, social justice activist and performer Adrienne Brown<\/strong>;
\n– Educator Prudence Browne<\/strong>;
\n– Food justice activist Dara Cooper<\/strong>;
\n– Divestment activist Sean Estelle<\/strong>;
\n– Indigenous historian Nick Estes;<\/strong>
\n– Author and racial justice and labor activist Bill Fletcher, Jr.<\/strong>;
\n– Afro-Jewish philosopher, educator and musician Lewis Gordon<\/strong>;
\n– American studies scholar and anti-racist social movements historian Christina Heatherton<\/strong>;
\n– Educator Alice Kim<\/strong>;
\n– Journalist, columnist and author Naomi Klein<\/strong>;
\n– New Orleans poet, singer and activist<\/span> Sunni Patterson<\/strong>; and
\n– Ethnomusicologist Stephanie Shonekan<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

\"Re-Map<\/a>Topics of discussion will include Afrofuturism and post-oppression desires, decolonizing knowledge and liberatory education, sustainable futures, and next systems and new economic possibilities.<\/p>\n

Brock said this will be a “conference\/unconference” featuring modules that will include panel discussions, breakout sessions, and performances “designed to prompt us to collectively conjure, theorize, decolonize, and map a future we can all thrive in.”<\/p>\n

Conference modules will take place at the ACSJL (205 Monroe Street) and other venues on the K campus.<\/p>\n

The Arcus Center for Social Justice Leadership (www.kzoo.edu\/arcuscenter<\/a>) is an initiative of Kalamazoo College. is accepting applications to attend the 2016 WITH\/OUT \u00bfBORDERS? Conference scheduled for Oct. 20-23 on the K campus in Kalamazoo, Mich. Journalist and author Naomi Klein will be among a panel of distinguished conference participants. She will deliver the keynote address on the evening of Oct. 21.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis conference aims to confront and provoke the notion that the current nadir of austerity, violence and ascent of the global one-percent is normal and the best we humans can do,\u201d said Brock. \u201cWe intend to bring together people whose work envisions an imaginative, robust, plentiful and just future.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>According to Brock, confirmed conference participants thus far include:<\/p>\n<p>– Political scientist <strong>Simon Akindes<\/strong>;<br \/>\n– Actor, singer, writer and composer <strong>Daniel Beatty<\/strong>;<br \/>\n– Author and political scientist <strong>Peter Bratsis<\/strong>;<br \/>\n– Science fiction writer, social justice activist and performer <strong>Adrienne Brown<\/strong>;<br \/>\n– Educator <strong>Prudence Browne<\/strong>;<br \/>\n– Food justice activist <strong>Dara Cooper<\/strong>;<br \/>\n– Divestment activist <strong>Sean Estelle<\/strong>;<br \/>\n– Indigenous historian <strong>Nick Estes;<\/strong><br \/>\n– Author and racial justice and labor activist <strong>Bill Fletcher, Jr.<\/strong>;<br \/>\n– Afro-Jewish philosopher, educator and musician <strong>Lewis Gordon<\/strong>;<br \/>\n– American studies scholar and anti-racist social movements historian <strong>Christina Heatherton<\/strong>;<br \/>\n– Educator <strong>Alice Kim<\/strong>;<br \/>\n– Journalist, columnist and author <strong>Naomi Klein<\/strong>;<br \/>\n<span class=\"st\">– New Orleans poet, singer and activist<\/span> <strong>Sunni Patterson<\/strong>; and<br \/>\n– Ethnomusicologist <strong>Stephanie Shonekan<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.kzoo.edu\/news\/files\/2016\/04\/e-Map-the-World.png\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-7434\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-7434 size-full alignright\" src=\"http:\/\/www.kzoo.edu\/news\/files\/2016\/04\/e-Map-the-World.png\" alt=\"Re-Map the World 2016\" width=\"500\" height=\"318\" \/><\/a>Topics of discussion will include Afrofuturism and post-oppression desires, decolonizing knowledge and liberatory education, sustainable futures, and next systems and new economic possibilities.<\/p>\n<p>Brock said this will be a “conference\/unconference” featuring modules that will include panel discussions, breakout sessions, and performances “designed to prompt us to collectively conjure, theorize, decolonize, and map a future we can all thrive in.”<\/p>\n<p>Conference modules will take place at the ACSJL (205 Monroe Street) and other venues on the K campus.<\/p>\n<p>The Arcus Center for Social Justice Leadership (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.kzoo.edu\/arcuscenter\">www.kzoo.edu\/arcuscenter<\/a>) is an initiative of Kalamazoo College.
