\"Familia:<\/a>Familia: Trans Queer Liberation Movement (Familia), the only LGBTQ Latino organization in the United States that focuses on racial justice through a trans and queer lens, is the winner of the 2015 Kalamazoo College Global Prize<\/a> for Transformative Social Justice Leadership.<\/p>\n

Familia<\/a> was formed with a mission to work at the national and grassroots levels to achieve the collective liberation of LGBTQ Latinos and their families by leading an intergenerational movement through community organizing, advocacy, and education.<\/p>\n

Jennicet Gutierrez, an organizer with Familia, was humbled by receiving K\u2019s Global Prize.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s an honor to work on behalf of the undocumented immigrants who are suffering,\u201d they said. \u201cWe\u2019ll work tirelessly to stand up for the dignity of these brave people.\u201d<\/p>\n

The Global Prize, the second such award given since the biennial competition was born in 2013, was announced Saturday evening. It came after a two-day competition where the 10 finalist organizations engaged in social justice work from around the globe presented their projects to a panel of judges comprised of social justice advocates from Kalamazoo College, the local Kalamazoo community, the United States, and abroad.<\/p>\n

Mujeres Lucha y Derechos Para Todas A.C. (MULYD<\/span>)<\/a>, \u201cWomen, Struggle, and Rights for Everyone,\u201d a Mexican-based organization that works to educate and empower indigenous women about health and reproductive rights, and The Association of Injured Workers & Ex-Workers of General Motors Colmotores (ASOTRECOL)<\/a>, a group working to draw attention to the plight of employees injured at a GM plant in Colombia, each won an Audience Choice Award of $2,500 each.<\/p>\n

Jorge Gutierrez, national coordinator with the Los Angeles-based Familia, said the $25,000 prize, awarded by K\u2019s Arcus Center<\/a> for Social Justice Leadership, would help Familia sustain its current work and grow its influence into much needed areas.<\/p>\n

\u201cI am a mixed bag of emotions,\u201d said Gutierrez. \u201cAll of us who do social justice work deserve resources, and we are grateful for this prize. We don\u2019t take this lightly. We would continue doing what we\u2019re doing if we had won or not.\u201d<\/p>\n

The organization\u2019s work extends across the nation, including several Western states, Massachusetts, New York, and Pennsylvania. They are looking to enter the Midwest and many southern states as well, which the prize money will help them do \u2013 among other things, Jorge Gutierrez said.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe can now pay some volunteers, and devote our energies in areas we\u2019ve always wanted to,\u201d he said, adding some of the money would be given to the MULYD group, with which Familia is planning to collaborate.<\/p>\n

All ten finalist groups were awarded a plaque in recognition of their work by Kalamazoo College President Eileen Wilson-Oyelaran.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019ve spent 48 hours together, and come to appreciate each other in deep ways,\u201d she told members of the ten finalists. \u201cWe here at the College are touched by your collective work. Know that you are loved, affirmed, and empowered.\u201d<\/p>\n

Lisa Brock, academic director of the Arcus Center, gave a closing remark to finalists.<\/p>\n

winner of the 2015 <a href=\"https:\/\/reason.kzoo.edu\/csjl\/prize\/\">Kalamazoo College Global Prize<\/a> for Transformative Social Justice Leadership.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.kzoo.edu\/news\/kalamazoo-college-2015-global-prize-finalist-familia-trans-queer-liberation-movement\/\">Familia<\/a> was formed with a mission to work at the national and grassroots levels to achieve the collective liberation of LGBTQ Latinos and their families by leading an intergenerational movement through community organizing, advocacy, and education.<\/p>\n<p>Jennicet Gutierrez, an organizer with Familia, was humbled by receiving K\u2019s Global Prize.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s an honor to work on behalf of the undocumented immigrants who are suffering,\u201d they said. \u201cWe\u2019ll work tirelessly to stand up for the dignity of these brave people.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_6764\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-6764\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.kzoo.edu\/news\/files\/2015\/10\/amilia2.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-6764\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Familia National Coordinator Jorge Gutierrez<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The Global Prize, the second such award given since the biennial competition was born in 2013, was announced Saturday evening. It came after a two-day competition where the 10 finalist organizations engaged in social justice work from around the globe presented their projects to a panel of judges comprised of social justice advocates from Kalamazoo College, the local Kalamazoo community, the United States, and abroad.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.kzoo.edu\/news\/kalamazoo-college-2015-global-prize-finalist-mujeres-lucha-y-derechos-para-todas-a-c\/\">Mujeres Lucha y Derechos Para Todas A.C. (<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">MULYD<\/span>)<\/a>, \u201cWomen, Struggle, and Rights for Everyone,\u201d a Mexican-based organization that works to educate and empower indigenous women about health and reproductive rights, and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kzoo.edu\/news\/kalamazoo-college-2015-global-prize-finalist-association-of-injured-workers-ex-workers-of-general-motors-colmotores\/\">The Association of Injured Workers & Ex-Workers of General Motors Colmotores (ASOTRECOL)<\/a>, a group working to draw attention to the plight of employees injured at a GM plant in Colombia, each won an Audience Choice Award of $2,500 each.<\/p>\n<p>Jorge Gutierrez, national coordinator with the Los Angeles-based Familia, said the $25,000 prize, awarded by K\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/reason.kzoo.edu\/csjl\/\">Arcus Center<\/a> for Social Justice Leadership, would help Familia sustain its current work and grow its influence into much needed areas.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_6765\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-6765\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.kzoo.edu\/news\/files\/2015\/10\/ULYD1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-6765 size-medium\" src=\"\/\/www.kzoo.edu\/news\/files\/2015\/10\/ULYD1-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"Alicia Garcia and Guadalupe Garcia Alvarez outside the Arcus Center\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-6765\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Alicia Garcia and Guadalupe Garcia Alvarez of MULYD<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cI am a mixed bag of emotions,\u201d said Gutierrez. \u201cAll of us who do social justice work deserve resources, and we are grateful for this prize. We don\u2019t take this lightly. We would continue doing what we\u2019re doing if we had won or not.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The organization\u2019s work extends across the nation, including several Western states, Massachusetts, New York, and Pennsylvania. They are looking to enter the Midwest and many southern states as well, which the prize money will help them do \u2013 among other things, Jorge Gutierrez said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe can now pay some volunteers, and devote our energies in areas we\u2019ve always wanted to,\u201d he said, adding some of the money would be given to the MULYD group, with which Familia is planning to collaborate.<\/p>\n<p>All ten finalist groups were awarded a plaque in recognition of their work by Kalamazoo College President Eileen Wilson-Oyelaran.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_6766\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-6766\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.kzoo.edu\/news\/files\/2015\/10\/ustice-for-Injured-Colombian-GM-Workers2.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-6766 size-medium\" src=\"\/\/www.kzoo.edu\/news\/files\/2015\/10\/ustice-for-Injured-Colombian-GM-Workers2-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"Paige Shell-Spurling and Jorge Parra outside the Arcus Center\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-6766\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Paige Shell-Spurling and Jorge Parra of ASOTRECOL<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019ve spent 48 hours together, and come to appreciate each other in deep ways,\u201d she told members of the ten finalists. \u201cWe here at the College are touched by your collective work.
