Kaufman Chair Jeff Bartz with some of his students in K&#8217;s Dow Science Center&#8230;<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Professor of Chemistry <strong>Jeffrey Bartz, Ph.D.<\/strong>, is Kalamazoo College\u2019s new Kurt D. Kaufman Chair. His appointment\u2014made at the recommendation of Provost Mickey McDonald and confirmed by the College\u2019s board of trustees\u2014becomes effective July 1, 2015, and runs through June 30, 2020.<\/p>\n<p>The chair was established through a gift by late Kalamazoo College Trustee <strong>Paul Todd \u201942<\/strong> in recognition of Kurt Kaufman\u2019s significant leadership and wide influence as a faculty member at K. It\u2019s awarded to a K faculty member to \u201crecognize and honor campus leadership and excellence in teaching.\u201d <strong>Regina Stevens-Truss<\/strong> (Chemistry) has held the Kaufman Chair for the past five years.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI offer my warmest congratulations to Professor Bartz,\u201d said K President Eileen Wilson-Oyelaran. \u201cProvost McDonald\u2019s recommendation highlights Professor Bartz\u2019s ongoing excellence as a teacher in the classroom, in the laboratory, and as a mentor. He is known as a teaching innovator on campus and for mentoring and supporting students of color and first-generation students.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_6197\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-6197\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.kzoo.edu\/news\/files\/2015\/06\/eff-Bartz-and-students-21.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-6197 size-medium\" src=\"\/\/www.kzoo.edu\/news\/files\/2015\/06\/eff-Bartz-and-students-21-300x223.png\" alt=\"Professor Jeff Bartz with three students at K's laser lab\" width=\"300\" height=\"223\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.kzoo.edu\/news\/files\/2015\/06\/eff-Bartz-and-students-21-300x223.png 300w, https:\/\/www.kzoo.edu\/news\/files\/2015\/06\/eff-Bartz-and-students-21.png 390w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-6197\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">&#8230;and in the College&#8217;s Laser Lab.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Jeff Bartz joined the K chemistry department as an assistant professor in 1997 and became a full professor in 2011. He teaches courses in physical and general chemistry and works with K students in the research laboratory. His research is in the area of chemical dynamics.<\/p>\n<p>He earned a B.S. degree in chemistry with a minor in mathematics from Southwest Minnesota State University in 1985 and his Ph.D. degree in physical chemistry at the University of Wisconsin-Madison in 1992.<\/p>\n<p>Visit <a href=\"http:\/\/people.kzoo.edu\/~jbartz\/Jeffrey_Bartz,_Kalamazoo_College\/Home.html\">Professor Bartz\u2019s webpage<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Kurt Kaufman<\/strong> was a professor of chemistry at K from 1956 to 1980 who was lauded by students and faculty colleagues as an accomplished researcher and gifted communicator who loved to teach. Kaufman Chair. His appointment\u2014made at the recommendation of Provost Mickey McDonald and confirmed by the College\u2019s board of trustees\u2014becomes effective July 1, 2015, and runs through June 30, 2020.<\/p>\n<p>The chair was established through a gift by late Kalamazoo College Trustee <strong>Paul Todd \u201942<\/strong> in recognition of Kurt Kaufman\u2019s significant leadership and wide influence as a faculty member at K. It\u2019s awarded to a K faculty member to \u201crecognize and honor campus leadership and excellence in teaching.\u201d <strong>Regina Stevens-Truss<\/strong> (Chemistry) has held the Kaufman Chair for the past five years.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI offer my warmest congratulations to Professor Bartz,\u201d said K President Eileen Wilson-Oyelaran. \u201cProvost McDonald\u2019s recommendation highlights Professor Bartz\u2019s ongoing excellence as a teacher in the classroom, in the laboratory, and as a mentor. He is known as a teaching innovator on campus and for mentoring and supporting students of color and first-generation students.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_6197\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-6197\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.kzoo.edu\/news\/files\/2015\/06\/eff-Bartz-and-students-21.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-6197 size-medium\" src=\"\/\/www.kzoo.edu\/news\/files\/2015\/06\/eff-Bartz-and-students-21-300x223.png\" alt=\"Professor Jeff Bartz with three students at K's laser lab\" width=\"300\" height=\"223\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-6197\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">&#8230;and in the College&#8217;s Laser Lab.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Jeff Bartz joined the K chemistry department as an assistant professor in 1997 and became a full professor in 2011. He teaches courses in physical and general chemistry and works with K students in the research laboratory. His research is in the area of chemical dynamics.<\/p>\n<p>He earned a B.S. degree in chemistry with a minor in mathematics from Southwest Minnesota State University in 1985 and his Ph.D. degree in physical chemistry at the University of Wisconsin-Madison in 1992.<\/p>\n<p>Visit <a href=\"http:\/\/people.kzoo.edu\/~jbartz\/Jeffrey_Bartz,_Kalamazoo_College\/Home.html\">Professor Bartz\u2019s webpage<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Kurt Kaufman<\/strong> was a professor of chemistry at K from 1956 to 1980 who was lauded by students and faculty colleagues as an accomplished researcher and gifted communicator who loved to teach.
