{"id":5429,"date":"2015-02-20T10:43:25","date_gmt":"2015-02-20T14:43:25","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.kzoo.edu\/news\/?p=5429"},"modified":"2022-03-23T14:55:02","modified_gmt":"2022-03-23T18:55:02","slug":"jane-and-grace","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.kzoo.edu\/news\/jane-and-grace\/","title":{"rendered":"Jane and Grace"},"content":{"rendered":"<figure id=\"attachment_5430\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-5430\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.kzoo.edu\/news\/files\/2015\/02\/aneAndGrace.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-5430 size-full\" src=\"\/\/www.kzoo.edu\/news\/files\/2015\/02\/aneAndGrace.jpg\" alt=\"Seniors Jane Huffman and Grace Gilmore\" width=\"300\" height=\"215\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-5430\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Current seniors Jane Huffman (left) and Grace Gilmore during one of their sophomore year collaborations&#8211;Shakespeare&#8217;s &#8220;Titus Andronicus&#8221;<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Seniors <strong>Jane Huffman<\/strong> and <strong>Grace Gilmore<\/strong> are collaborating on the Festival Playhouse at Kalamazoo College\u2019s production of Ann-Marie MacDonald\u2019s <em>Good Night Desdemona (Good Morning Juliet)<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>Jane is the assistant director <em>of Good Night Desdemona&#8230;<\/em>, a different&#8211;or, perhaps more accurately&#8211;an &#8220;expanded&#8221; directing experience than the one she enjoyed previously this term when her own play, <em>Where the Bee Sucks<\/em>, was performed at the New Play House Festival in downtown Kalamazoo. \u201cTo go from a one act play with three actors to a two act play with six actors has been illuminating,&#8221; says Jane. &#8220;I\u2019ve learned a great deal from Karen Berthel [director of <em>Good Night Desdemona&#8230;<\/em> and an associate professor of theatre arts] about how to work in a bigger space, with a bigger company.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Jane also finds this term\u2019s work good preparation for the spring term, when she will direct the play, <em>Nine Parts of Desire<\/em>. Jane is earning majors in theatre arts and in English, and she has published quite a few of her poems. \u201cI\u2019ve learned that getting published is about 90 percent submitting and 10 percent writing.\u201d Next year she plans to begin work on an MFA in poetry.<\/p>\n<p>Grace Gilmore plays the lead role of Constance in <em>Good Night Desdemona&#8230;<\/em>. &#8220;At times I feel really connected with Constance but other times so far away from her. Her views and opinions come from second-wave feminism, which is difficult for me to relate to.\u201d Fall term Grace performed her Senior Individualized Project, the one-woman show \u201c2.5 Minute Ride\u201d by Kalamazoo College alumna (and Tony Award nominee) <strong>Lisa Kron \u201983<\/strong>. Grace also won the Irene Ryan Award for Performance for Region 3 of the American College Theatre Festival. Grace competed against 274 other contestants from Region 3, ACTF\u2019s largest, which includes Wisconsin, Illinois, Michigan, and Indiana. She and the seven winners from the other ACTF regions will take part in a national program at the John F. Kennedy Center this summer. Grace will work with national directors, perform at various venues in New York, and participate in a final showcase performance at the Kennedy Center. Her views and opinions come from second-wave feminism, which is difficult for me to relate to.\u201d Fall term Grace performed her Senior Individualized Project, the one-woman show \u201c2.5 Minute Ride\u201d by Kalamazoo College alumna (and Tony Award nominee) <strong>Lisa Kron \u201983<\/strong>. Grace also won the Irene Ryan Award for Performance for Region 3 of the American College Theatre Festival. Grace competed against 274 other contestants from Region 3, ACTF\u2019s largest, which includes Wisconsin, Illinois, Michigan, and Indiana. She and the seven winners from the other ACTF regions will take part in a national program at the John F. Kennedy Center this summer. Grace will work with national directors, perform at various venues in New York, and participate in a final showcase performance at the Kennedy Center.
