Below are recent achievements by just a few K faculty members. Well done, professors!<\/p>\n<p>(By the way, K has a very low (13-1) student-to-faculty ratio. Of the nearly 100 full-time &#8220;resident&#8221; faculty, 96 percent hold a Ph.D. or equivalent terminal degree.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><strong><span style=\"font-size: 11pt\">Bob Batsell<\/span><\/strong><span style=\"font-size: 11.0pt\">, professor of psychology, received a 2014-2015 Scholarship of Teaching and Learning grant, from K\u2019s Teaching and Learning Committee, for his project \u201cTest Enhanced Learning in the Psychology Classroom.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><strong><span style=\"font-size: 11pt\">Jeff Bartz<\/span><\/strong><span style=\"font-size: 11.0pt\">, professor of chemistry, received a $220,000 grant from the National Science Foundation for his project entitled \u201cPhotodissociation Dynamics Studied by Velocity-Mapping Ion Imaging.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"font-size: 11pt\">Lisa Brock<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 11pt\">, <\/span><\/strong><span style=\"font-size: 11.0pt\">academic director of the Arcus Center for Social Justice Leadership and associate professor of history, co-edited a special issue of the <em>Radical History Review<\/em> on the global antiapartheid movement.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><strong><span style=\"font-size: 11pt\">Henry Cohen<\/span><\/strong><span style=\"font-size: 11.0pt\">, emeritus professor of romance languages and literature, published the article \u201cThe river, the levee, love and confession: The thematic of Grazia Deledda\u2019s L\u2019argine\u201d in <em>Forum Italicum<\/em>. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><strong><span style=\"font-size: 11pt\">Kiran Cunningham<\/span><\/strong><span style=\"font-size: 11.0pt\">, professor of anthropology, received a 2014-15 Scholarship of Teaching and Learning grant from K\u2019s Teaching and Learning Committee, for her project \u201cAn Assessment of Transformative<\/span> <span style=\"font-size: 11.0pt\">Learning through Change-Oriented Research.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormalCxSpMiddle\" style=\"line-height: 12.0pt\"><strong><span style=\"font-size: 11pt\">John Dugas<\/span><\/strong><span style=\"font-size: 11.0pt\"><strong>,<\/strong> professor of political science<\/span> and <span style=\"font-size: 11.0pt\">Arcus Center for Social Justice Leadership associate, published two book chapters. <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 11.0pt\">\u201cOld Wine in New Wineskins: Incorporating the \u2018Ungoverned Spaces\u2019 Concept into Plan Columbia,\u201d appeared in <em>U.S. National Security Concerns in Latin America and the Caribbean: The Concept of Ungoverned Spaces and Failed States<\/em>. \u201cColombia\u201d appeared in <em>Politics of Latin America<\/em>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><strong><span style=\"font-size: 11pt\">Peter Erdi<\/span><\/strong><span style=\"font-size: 11.0pt\">, Luce professor of complex systems studies, <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 11.0pt\">co-authored <em>Stochastic Chemical Kinetics<\/em>, a book published by Springer.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><strong><span style=\"font-size: 11pt\">Dennis Frost<\/span><\/strong><span style=\"font-size: 11.0pt\">, Wen Chao Chen associate professor of East Asian social sciences, published \u201cSporting Disability: Official Representations of the Disabled Body at Tokyo\u2019s 1964 Paralympics\u201d in the <em>Asia Pacific Journal of Sport and Social Science<\/em>. He <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 11.0pt\">also received a 2014-15 scholarship of teaching and learning grant from K\u2019s Teaching and Learning Committee for his project \u201cAcquiring the Gift of Gab: Demystifying Public Speaking.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><strong><span style=\"font-size: 11pt\">Laura Furge<\/span><\/strong><span style=\"font-size: 11.0pt\">, Roger F. and Harriet G. Varney professor of chemistry, published two papers with student co-authors: \u201cMechanism-based Inactivation of Human Cytochrome p450 3A4 by Two Piperazine containing Compounds\u201d appeared in <em>Drug Metabolism and Disposition;<\/em> \u201cMolecular Dynamics of CYP2D6 Polymorphisms in the Absence and Presence of a Mechanism-based Inactivator Reveals Changes in Local Flexibility and Substrate Access Channels\u201d appeared in <em>PLoS One<\/em>. Also, her article \u201cBiochemistry and Molecular Biology Education\u201d was published in <em>Social Ecology of the Classroom: Issues of Inclusivity<\/em>.\u00a0 <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><strong><span style=\"font-size: 11pt\">Adriana Garriga-Lopez<\/span><\/strong><span style=\"font-size: 11.0pt\">, assistant professor of anthropology and Arcus Center for Social Justice Leadership associate, published \u201cAzucar dura y melaza vaga\u201d in the online journal <em>80grados<\/em>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><strong><span style=\"font-size: 11pt\">Menelik Geremew<\/span><\/strong><span style=\"font-size: 11.0pt\"> is the new Stephen B. Monroe assistant professor of money and banking, a chair held by the faculty member within the Department of Economics and Business who teaches in the field of money and banking. Charles J. Monroe established this chair in 1966 in honor of his father, Stephen B. Monroe.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><strong><span style=\"font-size: 11pt\">Christine Hahn<\/span><\/strong><span style=\"font-size: 11.0pt;font-family: \u2019Times New Roman\u2019,\u2019serif\u2019\">, <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 11.0pt\">assistant professor of art and art history, has begun a three-year term on the College Art Association\u2019s (CAA) Committee on Diversity Practices, one of CAA\u2019s nine Professional Interests, Practices, and Standards Committees. Her committee supports the development of global perspectives on art and visual culture; promotes artistic, curatorial, scholarly, and institutional practices; and assesses and evaluates the development and implementation of curricular innovation, new research methods, curatorial and pedagogical strategies, and hiring practices that contribute to the realization of these goals. The Committee is committed to organizing conference sessions that address issues concerning race and ethnicity.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><strong><span style=\"font-size: 11pt\">Autumn Hostetter<\/span><\/strong><span style=\"font-size: 11.0pt\">, associate professor of psychology, had three articles published recently. \u201cGesture-speech integration in children with specific language impairment\u201d appeared in the <em>International Journal of Language and Communication Disorders<\/em>; \u201cGesutre in Reasoning: An Embodied Perspective\u201d appeared in <em>The Routledge Handbook of Embodied Cognition<\/em>; and \u201cAction Attenuates the Effect of Visibility on Gesture Rates\u201d appeared in the journal <em>Cognitive Science<\/em>. She <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 11.0pt\">also received a 2014-15 Scholarship of Teaching and Learning grant from K\u2019s Teaching and Learning Committee for her project \u201cTest Enhanced Learning in the Psychology Classroom.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><strong><span style=\"font-size: 11pt\">Patrik Hultberg<\/span><\/strong><span style=\"font-size: 11.0pt\">, associate professor of economics, received a 2014-15 Scholarship of Teaching and Learning grant from K\u2019s Teaching and Learning Committee for his project \u201cAssessing the Flipped Classroom.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormalCxSpMiddle\" style=\"line-height: 12.0pt\"><strong><span style=\"font-size: 11pt\">Andrew Koehler<\/span><\/strong><span style=\"font-size: 11.0pt\"><strong>,<\/strong> associate professor of music <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 11.0pt\">and director of the Kalamazoo Philharmonic won the American Prize in Orchestral Programming \u2013 Community Division. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormalCxSpMiddle\" style=\"line-height: 12.0pt\"><strong><span style=\"font-size: 11pt\">Maksim Kokushkin<\/span><\/strong><span style=\"font-size: 11.0pt\">, assistant professor of sociology published \u201cStandpoint Theory is Dead, Long Live Standpoint Theory! Why Standpoint Thinking Should Be Embraced by Scholars Who Do Not Identify as Feminists?\u201d in the J<em>ournal of Arts and Humanities<\/em>. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormalCxSpMiddle\" style=\"line-height: 12.0pt\"><strong><span style=\"font-size: 11pt\">Amy Lane<\/span><\/strong><span style=\"font-size: 11.0pt\">, visiting assistant professor of sociology, <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 11.0pt\">received a 2014-15 Scholarship of Teaching and Learning grant from K\u2019s Teaching and Learning Committee for her project \u201cAn Assessment of Transformative Learning through Change-Oriented Research.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><strong><span style=\"font-size: 11pt\">Charlene Boyer Lewis<\/span><\/strong><span style=\"font-size: 11.0pt\">, professor of history, was selected into the Organization of American Historians Distinguished Lectureship Program. <\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormalCxSpMiddle\" style=\"line-height: 12.0pt\"><strong><span style=\"font-size: 11pt\">Sarah Lindley<\/span><\/strong><span style=\"font-size: 11.0pt\">, associate professor of art, had an exhibition at the Lansing Art Gallery titled \u201cOf Consequences: Industry &amp; Surrounds.\u201d She also received a Great Lakes Colleges Association (GLCA) Expanding Collaboration Initiative titled \u201cSurrounding Industry and Environs: An Intellectual Resource Collective.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><strong><span style=\"font-size: 11pt\">Amy MacMillan<\/span><\/strong><span style=\"font-size: 11.0pt\">, L. Lee Stryker assistant professor of business management and her co-authors received the award for best conference refereed paper from the Marketing Management Association for their paper \u201cImproving the Collaborative Online Student Evaluation Process.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><strong><span style=\"font-size: 11pt\">Simona Moti<\/span><\/strong><span style=\"font-size: 11.0pt\">, assistant professor of German, had her essay \u201cBetween Political Engagement and Political Unconscious: Hugo von Hofmannsthal and the Slavic East\u201d published as a chapter in the edited volume of <em>German Literature as World Literature<\/em>. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><strong><span style=\"font-size: 11pt\">Andy Mozina<\/span><\/strong><span style=\"font-size: 11.0pt\">, professor of English, published <em>Quality Snacks<\/em>, a book of 15 short fiction stories. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><strong><span style=\"font-size: 11pt\">Stacy Nowicki<\/span><\/strong><span style=\"font-size: 11.0pt\">, Title IX coordinator and library director, was appointed by Michigan Governor Rick Snyder to the Library of Michigan Board of Trustees. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><strong><span style=\"font-size: 11pt\">Jennifer Perry<\/span><\/strong><span style=\"font-size: 11.0pt\">, visiting assistant professor of psychology, received a 2014-15 Scholarship of Teaching and Learning grant from K\u2019s Teaching and Learning Committee for her project \u201cTest Enhanced Learning in the Psychology Classroom.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><strong><span style=\"font-size: 11pt\">Taylor Petrey<\/span><\/strong><span style=\"font-size: 11.0pt\">, Lucinda Hinsdale Stone assistant professor of religion, published his article \u201cSemen Stains: Seminal Procreation and the Patrilineal Genealogy of Salvation in Tertullian\u201d in the <em>Journal of Early Christian Studies<\/em>. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><strong><span style=\"font-size: 11pt\">Di Seuss<\/span><\/strong><span style=\"font-size: 11.0pt\">, writer in residence and assistant professor of English, received residency at Hedgebrook, a writing retreat for women writers<\/span> <span style=\"font-size: 11.0pt\">on Whidbey Island, Wash. Her essay\/prose poem was published in <em>Brevity<\/em> and several of her poems have been selected to be published in the <em>Missouri Review<\/em>. Her piece \u201cWal-Mart Parking Lot\u201d received the \u201c\u00bd K Prize\u201d from the <em>Indiana Review <\/em>and her piece \u201cFree Beer\u201d was selected to be included in <em>Best American Poetry 2014<\/em>. Di is now in a tenure track position at K. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><strong><span style=\"font-size: 11pt\">Mike Sosulski<\/span><\/strong><span style=\"font-size: 11.0pt\">, associate provost and chair and associate professor of German, won 2014\u2019s Best Article Award from the journal <em>Die Unterrichtspraxis\/Teaching German<\/em> with his article \u201cFrom Broadway to Berlin: Transformative Learning through German Hip-Hop.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><strong><span style=\"font-size: 11pt\">Noriko Sugimori<\/span><\/strong><span style=\"font-size: 11.0pt\">, assistant professor of Japanese, received a grant from the GLCA Expanding Collaboration Initiative for the project \u201cBringing East Asia to the Great Lakes Region: An Intergenerational Cross-Cultural Digital Oral History Project.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><strong><span style=\"font-size: 11pt\">Amanda Wollenberg<\/span><\/strong><span style=\"font-size: 11.0pt\">, assistant professor of biology, was a recipient of a 2014-15 Scholarship of Teaching and Learning Grant, from K\u2019s Teaching and Learning Committee for her project \u201cAssessment of Student Experiences in the Cell and Molecular Biology Lab.\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><strong><span style=\"font-size: 11pt\">Margaret Wiedenhoeft<\/span><\/strong><span style=\"font-size: 11.0pt\">, associate director for the Center of International Programs, was selected as one of three co-editors of the forthcoming 4<sup>th<\/sup> Edition of NAFSA\u2019s Guide to Education Abroad for Administrators and Advisors. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><strong><span style=\"font-size: 11pt\">Michael Wollenberg<\/span><\/strong><span style=\"font-size: 11.0pt\">, assistant Professor of biology, co-authored \u201cPropioniobacterium-Produced Coproporphyrin III Induces Staphylococcus aureus Aggregation and Biofirm Formation.\u201d a paper titled in <em>mBio<\/em>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>[<strong>Malllory Zink \u201915<\/strong>, helped compile this list. Also, her article \u201cBiochemistry and Molecular Biology Education\u201d was published in <em>Social Ecology of the Classroom: Issues of Inclusivity<\/em>.\u00a0 <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><strong><span style=\"font-size: 11pt\">Adriana Garriga-Lopez<\/span><\/strong><span style=\"font-size: 11.0pt\">, assistant professor of anthropology and Arcus Center for Social Justice Leadership associate, published \u201cAzucar dura y melaza vaga\u201d in the online journal <em>80grados<\/em>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><strong><span style=\"font-size: 11pt\">Menelik Geremew<\/span><\/strong><span style=\"font-size: 11.0pt\"> is the new Stephen B. Monroe assistant professor of money and banking, a chair held by the faculty member within the Department of Economics and Business who teaches in the field of money and banking. Charles J. Monroe established this chair in 1966 in honor of his father, Stephen B. Monroe.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><strong><span style=\"font-size: 11pt\">Christine Hahn<\/span><\/strong><span style=\"font-size: 11.0pt;font-family: \u2019Times New Roman\u2019,\u2019serif\u2019\">, <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 11.0pt\">assistant professor of art and art history, has begun a three-year term on the College Art Association\u2019s (CAA) Committee on Diversity Practices, one of CAA\u2019s nine Professional Interests, Practices, and Standards Committees. Her committee supports the development of global perspectives on art and visual culture; promotes artistic, curatorial, scholarly, and institutional practices; and assesses and evaluates the development and implementation of curricular innovation, new research methods, curatorial and pedagogical strategies, and hiring practices that contribute to the realization of these goals. The Committee is committed to organizing conference sessions that address issues concerning race and ethnicity.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><strong><span style=\"font-size: 11pt\">Autumn Hostetter<\/span><\/strong><span style=\"font-size: 11.0pt\">, associate professor of psychology, had three articles published recently. \u201cGesture-speech integration in children with specific language impairment\u201d appeared in the <em>International Journal of Language and Communication Disorders<\/em>; \u201cGesutre in Reasoning: An Embodied Perspective\u201d appeared in <em>The Routledge Handbook of Embodied Cognition<\/em>; and \u201cAction Attenuates the Effect of Visibility on Gesture Rates\u201d appeared in the journal <em>Cognitive Science<\/em>.
