\"Professor<\/a>Professor of Psychology Siu-Lan Tan<\/strong>\u2019s latest blog–“Rolling Through Time<\/strong>“–reunites her with former K student John Baxa<\/strong> in a conversation about an animated short feature John helped create. That short is titled “Ball” and is about time. Or is it memory (its power and limitations)? Or aging? Play or death?\u00a0 All this in a three-minute animated short? Of course, suggests Siu-Lan and John. It\u2019s a matter of layers (certainly a part of What Shapes Film) as well as all that a viewer brings to the experience (the story is in the eye of the beholder<\/strong>). Enjoy your own encounter, to which you bring…what?<\/p>\n

Three or four viewings evoked for me two poems, one by Wislawa Szymborska and the other by K\u2019s own Con Hilberry<\/strong>. The poems are related to each other and to the animated short, though the three differ, especially in the feeling of their endings. The poems are shared below.<\/p>\n

John graduated from K in 2009. He majored in psychology and earned a concentration in media studies. He recently completed a Master\u2019s degree in entertainment technology at Carnegie Mellon. His short has no speech or text. Layers of image and music are everything. The music, somewhat ironically, is titled “Words.”<\/p>\n

Returning memories?
\nNo, at the time of death
\nI\u2019d like to see lost objects

Avalanches of gloves,
\ncoats, suitcases, umbrellas\u2014
\ncome, and I\u2019ll say at last:
\nWhat good\u2019s all this?<\/p>\n

Safety pins, two odd combs,
\na paper rose, a knife,
\nsome string\u2014come, and I\u2019ll say
\nat last: I haven\u2019t missed you.<\/p>\n

Please turn up, key, come out,
\nwherever you\u2019ve been hiding,
\nin time for me to say:
\nYou\u2019ve gotten rusty friend!<\/p>\n

Downpours of affidavits,
\npermits and questionnaires,
\nrain down and I will say:
\nI see the sun behind you.<\/p>\n

My watch, dropped in a river,
\nbob up and let me seize you\u2014
\nthen, face to face, I\u2019ll say:
\nYour so-called time is up.<\/p>\n

And lastly, toy balloon
\nonce kidnapped by the wind\u2014
\ncome home, and I will say:
\nThere are no children here.<\/p>\n

Fly out the open window
\nand into the wide world;
\nlet someone else should \u201cLook!\u201d
\nand I will cry.<\/p>\n

Is any of this true? Nightgowns,
\nglances, griefs existing nowhere<\/p>\n

but in this sieve of memory.
\nNewspaper files, bank accounts,<\/p>\n

court records\u2014nothing there.
\nIt\u2019s gone, except for these scratchy<\/p>\n
