{"id":429,"date":"2012-03-16T14:22:03","date_gmt":"2012-03-16T18:22:03","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.kzoo.edu\/news\/?p=429"},"modified":"2022-03-25T15:23:11","modified_gmt":"2022-03-25T19:23:11","slug":"student-and-mentor-receive-pierce-cedar-creek-institute-for-environmental-educations-nature-in-words-fellowship","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.kzoo.edu\/news\/student-and-mentor-receive-pierce-cedar-creek-institute-for-environmental-educations-nature-in-words-fellowship\/","title":{"rendered":"Student and Mentor Receive Pierce Cedar Creek Institute for Environmental Education\u2019s Nature in Words Fellowship"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Kate Belew \u201915<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0<strong>Di Seuss<\/strong>, English, have\u00a0received\u00a0the Pierce Cedar Creek Institute for Environmental Education\u2019s\u00a0Nature in Words\u00a0Fellowship for the summer of 2012.<\/p>\n<p>Following Fellowship guidelines, students apply with a mentor from one of the consortium institutions.\u00a0 Kate proposed that she will write a collection of poems inspired by Professor Emeritus of English\u00a0<strong>Conrad\u00a0Hilberry\u2019<\/strong>s object poems in his chapbook\u00a0<em>The Fingernail of Luck.<\/em>\u00a0(Hilberry was a formative influence on the poetic career of Seuss, whom he first encountered as a high schooler in Niles, Michigan, and who graduated from &#8220;K&#8221; in 1978.)\u00a0<em>\u00a0<\/em>In Kate\u2019s poems, she will observe objects in the natural world, do research on their origins and characteristics, and then write in their voices, finding the intersection between the natural world and her own emotional and spiritual evolution.<\/p>\n<p>She will be provided with housing at the Institute and will be given a stipend to support her work.\u00a0 Di will meet with Kate throughout the summer to mentor her through the experience, and Di also have the opportunity to work on my own writing project at Pierce Cedar Creek.
