What do students do at Kalamazoo College<\/strong> during the summer? They are certainly here\u2014some 200 or so. Students from around the world enjoy these hot months on campus. They work as interns, they continue work-study jobs, they spruce up the infrastructure with Facilities Management (FacMan) colleagues, they conduct research in the Dow science building, they dive into the early phases of the Senior Individualized Projects. For fun, they run around, go on adventures, eat great food, and hang out with friends. Here\u2019s what a few students are up to this summer.<\/p>\n

\"Jane<\/a>
Jane Huffman<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

Meet Jane Huffman \u201915<\/strong>, administrative intern for the theatre arts department, splitting her time between Saugatuck (Mich., where she\u2019s working on the plays Xanadu<\/em> and Game Show<\/em>) and the Kalamazoo College campus. She has been having some fun cooking home made meals with her housemates and going to see some shows at the local theatres. She will study this fall in Chicago and is sad to be missing the opening festivities of the 50th<\/sup>anniversary season of Festival Playhouse at Kalamazoo College.<\/p>\n

\"Dorraine<\/a>
Dorraine Duncan<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

Dorraine Duncan \u201914<\/strong> is the student intern at the Arcus Center for Social Justice Leadership.\u00a0 This summer she has been cooking up an international food storm. The best meal she has made was her own version of the Thai dish \u201cGra-Pow\u201d. Her friend from Thailand gave her an eight out of 10! Dorraine will soon return to Kingston, Jamaica, for an environmental internship. It will be her first trip home in two years.<\/p>\n

\"Utsav<\/a>
Utsav Adhikari and “The Beast”.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

Utsav Adhikari \u201914 <\/strong>is in his third year on the FacMan recycling crew this summer. On that experience rests his claim to be the \u201cwisest of the FacMan recycling crew.\u201d This summer he went to Irish Fest, one of many summer festivals in downtown Kalamazoo, and had a splendid time. He plays a lot of soccer with neighborhood acquaintances on the Davis Street soccer fields, and chills with friends at the beach in St. Joseph, Mich. At the end of June, he left for an internship at Pinnacle Solutions, a business intelligence company based in Indianapolis, Ind.<\/p>\n

\"Compost<\/a>
Compost Intern Samantha Jolly<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

Samantha Jolly \u201915<\/strong> holds two positions this summer. She is one of three interns for the Lillian Anderson Arboretum<\/a>. And she\u2019s the College\u2019s sole summer compost intern. Whatever you might imagine about that second post, Samantha likes both her jobs\u2014minimal supervision! She is her own boss! At three o\u2019clock everyday she heads home to start cooking something delectable; her best meal so far has been her black bean burgers. Every weekend Samantha heads downtown for brunch at her favorite local restaurant, Main Street Caf\u00e9.<\/p>\n

\"Tyler<\/a>
Tyler Nichols<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

Tyler Nichols \u201915<\/strong> has been a busy kid this summer. He works full time as a chef at Henderson Castle, (he prefers the dinner shift). He also has a research stipend from K for an interdisciplinary research project with a political science emphasis. In between work and research he often finds himself at Bell\u2019s Brewing Company or at impromptu block parties in the Vine Street neighborhood.<\/p>\n

\"RA<\/a>
RA Erika Robles with Sammy Li<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

Erika Robles \u201914<\/strong> hails from Costa Rica and just returned to K from study abroad in Japan. In addition to working for FacMan she also serves as Hoben Hall\u2019s summer Resident Assistant. \u201cIt\u2019s much more chill in the summer here, with fun small events like barbeques,\u201d she said. She can\u2019t believe how many times she and her friends have made the trek by bus to the movie theater this summer. She has also been enjoying the festivals in downtown Kalamazoo.<\/p>\n

\"Brad<\/a>
Brad Stech<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

Brad Stech \u201915<\/strong> is a proud member of the custodial FacMan crew. He stayed over to earn some money before he heads out on his extended-term study abroad (nine months!) in Japan. He likes his job because of the funny and friendly people he gets to work with. In his free time he has been hanging out with friends, playing music, and enjoying sushi from downtown Kalamazoo.<\/p>\n

\"Dakota<\/a>
Dakota Clement<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

Dakota Clement \u201914<\/strong> lives with his friends in the Vine Street neighborhood. He is working his third summer for the FacMan grounds crew, and he is also starting preliminary research for his Senior Individualized Project. He is writing a poetry SIP based on nine of his favorite movies from directors Stanley Kubrick and Terrence Malick. These films include Clock Work Orange<\/em> and The Thin Red Line<\/em>.<\/p>\n

\"Hadley<\/a>
Hadley Harris<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

Hadley Harris \u201916<\/strong> lives only twenty minutes away from K but decided to stay on campus to continue her work-study job in media services. There are not too many media requests during the summer, so the crew has spent a lot of time cleaning the library\u2019s DVD collection. When she can\u2019t stand to be in the humid dorm rooms at night, she heads to the movies with her friends.<\/p>\n

\"Sammy<\/a>
Sammy Li<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

Sammy Li \u201916<\/strong>, a native of China, stayed at K to work for FacMan\u2019s renovation crew. She resides in the Vine Street neighborhood but often thinks about camping out in Hicks Center because of the summer heat! She has gone to the movies a lot, and not just because of the air conditioning. Her favorite films of the summer have been World War Z<\/em>, The Lone Ranger<\/em>, and Despicable Me 2<\/em>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"

Here\u2019s what a few students are up to this summer.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_2910\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2910\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.kzoo.edu\/news\/files\/2013\/07\/MG_2025.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-2910 size-medium\" src=\"\/\/www.kzoo.edu\/news\/files\/2013\/07\/MG_2025-300x251.jpg\" alt=\"Jane Huffman sitting at a desk\" width=\"300\" height=\"251\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-2910\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Jane Huffman<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Meet <strong>Jane Huffman \u201915<\/strong>, administrative intern for the theatre arts department, splitting her time between Saugatuck (Mich., where she\u2019s working on the plays <em>Xanadu<\/em> and <em>Game Show<\/em>) and the Kalamazoo College campus. She has been having some fun cooking home made meals with her housemates and going to see some shows at the local theatres. She will study this fall in Chicago and is sad to be missing the opening festivities of the 50<sup>th<\/sup>anniversary season of Festival Playhouse at Kalamazoo College.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_2917\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2917\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.kzoo.edu\/news\/files\/2013\/07\/MG_2032.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-2917 size-medium\" src=\"\/\/www.kzoo.edu\/news\/files\/2013\/07\/MG_2032-300x217.jpg\" alt=\"Dorraine Duncan sitting at a desk\" width=\"300\" height=\"217\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-2917\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Dorraine Duncan<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><strong>Dorraine Duncan \u201914<\/strong> is the student intern at the Arcus Center for Social Justice Leadership.\u00a0 This summer she has been cooking up an international food storm. The best meal she has made was her own version of the Thai dish \u201cGra-Pow\u201d. Her friend from Thailand gave her an eight out of 10! Dorraine will soon return to Kingston, Jamaica, for an environmental internship. It will be her first trip home in two years.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_2919\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2919\" style=\"width: 263px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.kzoo.edu\/news\/files\/2013\/07\/MG_2035.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-2919 size-medium\" src=\"\/\/www.kzoo.edu\/news\/files\/2013\/07\/MG_2035-263x300.jpg\" alt=\"Utsav Adhikari driving a cart\" width=\"263\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-2919\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Utsav Adhikari and “The Beast”.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><strong>Utsav Adhikari \u201914 <\/strong>is in his third year on the FacMan recycling crew this summer. On that experience rests his claim to be the \u201cwisest of the FacMan recycling crew.\u201d This summer he went to Irish Fest, one of many summer festivals in downtown Kalamazoo, and had a splendid time. He plays a lot of soccer with neighborhood acquaintances on the Davis Street soccer fields, and chills with friends at the beach in St. Joseph, Mich. At the end of June, he left for an internship at Pinnacle Solutions, a business intelligence company based in Indianapolis, Ind.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_2928\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2928\" style=\"width: 285px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.kzoo.edu\/news\/files\/2013\/07\/MG_2038.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-2928 size-medium\" src=\"\/\/www.kzoo.edu\/news\/files\/2013\/07\/MG_2038-285x300.jpg\" alt=\"Compost Intern Samantha Jolly\" width=\"285\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-2928\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Compost Intern Samantha Jolly<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><strong>Samantha Jolly \u201915<\/strong> holds two positions this summer. She is one of three interns for the <a href=\"https:\/\/reason.kzoo.edu\/arboretum\/about_us\/\">Lillian Anderson Arboretum<\/a>. And she\u2019s the College\u2019s sole summer compost intern. Whatever you might imagine about that second post, Samantha likes both her jobs\u2014minimal supervision! She is her own boss! At three o\u2019clock everyday she heads home to start cooking something delectable; her best meal so far has been her black bean burgers. Every weekend Samantha heads downtown for brunch at her favorite local restaurant, Main Street Caf\u00e9.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_2939\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2939\" style=\"width: 290px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.kzoo.edu\/news\/files\/2013\/07\/MG_2073.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-2939 size-medium\" src=\"\/\/www.kzoo.edu\/news\/files\/2013\/07\/MG_2073-290x300.jpg\" alt=\"Tyler Nichols in the library\" width=\"290\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-2939\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Tyler Nichols<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><strong>Tyler Nichols \u201915<\/strong> has been a busy kid this summer. He works full time as a chef at Henderson Castle, (he prefers the dinner shift). He also has a research stipend from K for an interdisciplinary research project with a political science emphasis. In between work and research he often finds himself at Bell\u2019s Brewing Company or at impromptu block parties in the Vine Street neighborhood.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_2941\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2941\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.kzoo.edu\/news\/files\/2013\/07\/MG_2075.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-2941 size-medium\" src=\"\/\/www.kzoo.edu\/news\/files\/2013\/07\/MG_2075-300x231.jpg\" alt=\"RA Erika Robles with Sammy Li\" width=\"300\" height=\"231\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-2941\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">RA Erika Robles with Sammy Li<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><strong>Erika Robles \u201914<\/strong> hails from Costa Rica and just returned to K from study abroad in Japan. In addition to working for FacMan she also serves as Hoben Hall\u2019s summer Resident Assistant. \u201cIt\u2019s much more chill in the summer here, with fun small events like barbeques,\u201d she said. She can\u2019t believe how many times she and her friends have made the trek by bus to the movie theater this summer. She has also been enjoying the festivals in downtown Kalamazoo.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_2933\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2933\" style=\"width: 209px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.kzoo.edu\/news\/files\/2013\/07\/MG_2041.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-2933 size-medium\" src=\"\/\/www.kzoo.edu\/news\/files\/2013\/07\/MG_2041-209x300.jpg\" alt=\"Brad Stech\" width=\"209\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-2933\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Brad Stech<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><strong>Brad Stech \u201915<\/strong> is a proud member of the custodial FacMan crew. He stayed over to earn some money before he heads out on his extended-term study abroad (nine months!) in Japan. He likes his job because of the funny and friendly people he gets to work with. In his free time he has been hanging out with friends, playing music, and enjoying sushi from downtown Kalamazoo.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_2943\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2943\" style=\"width: 225px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.kzoo.edu\/news\/files\/2013\/07\/MG_2079.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-2943 size-medium\" src=\"\/\/www.kzoo.edu\/news\/files\/2013\/07\/MG_2079-225x300.jpg\" alt=\"Dakota Clement\" width=\"225\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-2943\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Dakota Clement<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><strong>Dakota Clement \u201914<\/strong> lives with his friends in the Vine Street neighborhood. He is working his third summer for the FacMan grounds crew, and he is also starting preliminary research for his Senior Individualized Project. He is writing a poetry SIP based on nine of his favorite movies from directors Stanley Kubrick and Terrence Malick. These films include <em>Clock Work Orange<\/em> and <em>The Thin Red Line<\/em>.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_2959\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2959\" style=\"width: 252px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.kzoo.edu\/news\/files\/2013\/07\/MG_2070.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-2959 size-medium\" src=\"\/\/www.kzoo.edu\/news\/files\/2013\/07\/MG_2070-252x300.jpg\" alt=\"Hadley Harris\" width=\"252\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-2959\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Hadley Harris<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><strong>Hadley Harris \u201916<\/strong> lives only twenty minutes away from K but decided to stay on campus to continue her work-study job in media services. There are not too many media requests during the summer, so the crew has spent a lot of time cleaning the library\u2019s DVD collection. When she can\u2019t stand to be in the humid dorm rooms at night, she heads to the movies with her friends.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_2945\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2945\" style=\"width: 259px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.kzoo.edu\/news\/files\/2013\/07\/mage.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-2945 size-medium\" src=\"\/\/www.kzoo.edu\/news\/files\/2013\/07\/mage-259x300.jpg\" alt=\"Sammy Li\" width=\"259\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-2945\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Sammy Li<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><strong>Sammy Li \u201916<\/strong>, a native of China, stayed at K to work for FacMan\u2019s renovation crew. She resides in the Vine Street neighborhood but often thinks about camping out in Hicks Center because of the summer heat! She has gone to the movies a lot, and not just because of the air conditioning.
