Lawrence “Larry” Bryan, who served as the 15th president of Kalamazoo College from 1990 to 1996 and oversaw significant changes to the K-Plan<\/a><\/em>, died October 29, 2026, in Springfield, Illinois. He was 81.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Bryan became president of Kalamazoo College on Sept. 1, 1990, after more than 15 years as a professor and higher education administrator. He arrived deeply committed to the values of a small, residential liberal arts college and described a caring community as central to the K experience. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

His presidency coincided with several important developments for the College. The first Campaign for Kalamazoo concluded in January 1991, raising more than $48 million for the College’s endowment and other projects. A major goal of the campaign was construction of the Dow Science Center, which was fully funded through gifts and dedicated in October 1992. The center provided new laboratories, classrooms and offices for the chemistry and biology departments. The Olds-Upton Science Building was renovated in 1994-95 to provide updated facilities for physics, mathematics, computer science, psychology and education.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Bryan also worked to strengthen connections across campus and with the Kalamazoo community. He met with College departments early in his presidency, visited regional alumni groups and served locally through organizations including the Kalamazoo Rotary Club, Kalamazoo Symphony Orchestra board and Bronson Hospital board. He was a visible supporter of student activities and Hornet athletics<\/a>, regularly attending events and recognizing student and team accomplishments.\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

Bryan\u2019s presidency came during a period of sustained attention to diversity and multiculturalism at the College. In 1992, he called on the K community to place mutual respect and open dialogue at the center of campus life. He also appointed a Cultural Diversity Coordinating Committee to develop strategies for recruiting and retaining students and employees from underrepresented backgrounds and to improve the extracurricular and interpersonal climate on campus. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

One of Bryan’s most consequential efforts at Kalamazoo College was the renewal of the K-Plan<\/em>. In 1993, he initiated an extensive review involving faculty, students, staff and alumni, with the goal of developing a new calendar and curricular structure that would preserve and, where possible, strengthen the distinctive elements of a Kalamazoo College education. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The resulting changes retained the essential elements of the K-Plan<\/em>\u2014including rigorous academics, career development, study abroad and the Senior Integrated Project\u2014and moved those experiences from a full-year calendar into a tri-quarter academic calendar that better met the needs of current and prospective students. The renewed K-Plan <\/em>was ready for the entering class in fall 1996. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Before coming to K, Bryan earned a bachelor’s degree in philosophy from Muskingum College, a Master of Divinity from Garrett Theological Seminary and a Ph.D. in systematic theology and the philosophy of religion from Northwestern University. An ordained United Methodist minister, he served as a professor of religion, chaplain and later dean at McKendree College before becoming vice president and dean of Franklin College in Indiana in 1979. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

After leaving Kalamazoo College in the summer of 1996, Bryan was a visiting scholar at the University of Michigan, and in 1997, he became president of MacMurray College in Jacksonville, Illinois, where he served until his retirement in 2007. While there, he oversaw substantial campus modernization and helped lead a group of citizens in founding Jacksonville Main Street, a nonprofit that helped revitalize the city\u2019s downtown square. After retiring, Bryan and his wife, Marjorie “Marj” Bryan, returned to Indiana, where he worked in fundraising for the Community Foundation of Morgan County. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Bryan was a clergy member of the Great Rivers Conference of the United Methodist Church and was active at Morgantown United Methodist Church in Indiana. He also enjoyed writing, reading nonfiction, watching movies and following the Chicago Cubs.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Marj; two children; and three grandchildren.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

A celebration of life will take place at 11 a.m. Thursday, November 12, at Morgantown United Methodist Church, 20 E. Washington St., Morgantown, Indiana. Visitation will begin at 10 a.m. at the church. <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
