This summer, K to the Golden Gate took a group of first- and second-year students nearly 2,300 miles west, where a few days in San Francisco helped them imagine what their own futures might look like. Organized by the Center for Career and Professional Development<\/a> (CCPD) at Kalamazoo College and designed primarily for first-generation college students, the program combined company visits, job shadows, alumni coffee chats and cultural experiences in one of the nation\u2019s most innovative cities at no cost to students thanks to alumni support. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

CCPD Assistant Director Alejandro Alaniz says planning for the program begins nearly a year in advance as he coordinates with alumni, identifies host organizations and carefully matches students with professionals based on their interests. Alumni funding covers airfare, lodging, program expenses and meal stipends, removing financial barriers that might otherwise prevent students from participating.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI think my favorite part is students learning that they have a huge alumni network available to them,\u201d Alaniz said. \u201cSometimes they feel like they don\u2019t know who to reach out to or what is out there in the world for them. Getting a different perspective of what the day-to-day looks like for alumni really opens their eyes, helps them have meaningful conversations and, most importantly, starts building their network.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

San Francisco offered an ideal destination because of its diverse industries and strong alumni presence. Students visited Google, Adobe, Gilead and other biotechnology companies while also meeting alumni working in technology, finance, healthcare and environmental science. They toured workplaces, learned about career paths, and heard firsthand how K graduates built successful careers. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

For Son Le Dinh Truong \u201928, an international student from Vietnam majoring in computer science and mathematics, San Francisco represented a chance to see the technology industry up close. One of the trip\u2019s highlights was the opportunity to job shadow with Younsuk Koh \u201915, an alumnus and fellow international student who now works as a software engineer at Google. The two had previously connected through LinkedIn, but meeting in person transformed the relationship. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI got a chance to understand more about his job, about the company and what\u2019s behind this big and rapidly changing industry,\u201d Truong said.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

As a first-generation college student studying far from home, Truong said the experience provided much more than career advice. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThere were some points during the past two years that I felt lost because there were many things that I needed to navigate,\u201d he said. \u201cThis trip didn\u2019t just help me learn how to find a job. It helped me learn how to grow myself as a person and as an international student.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

He also came away with a different understanding of what employers value. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI was always thinking about how to get a job and impress employers,\u201d Truong said. \u201cBut the advice I received was about defining your value and growing as a person. People are looking at how collaborative you are and whether you\u2019re a good fit. That human connection is very important.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Jay Hernandez \u201928, a business major with a minor in computer science from San Antonio, Texas, had participated in a previous CCPD career trek to New York City<\/a>. When he learned about the San Francisco trek, applying was an easy decision. As a first-generation student, Hernandez said opportunities like these never seemed possible while he was growing up. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWhen I went to college and saw this opportunity, I knew I had to take advantage of it,\u201d he said. \u201cI got to visit Adobe and that was really cool. It helped me see that this could be my future.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The experience also reshaped his thinking about his career. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI know I want to go into finance after graduation, but this trip helped me realize that maybe financial advising isn\u2019t the only path I could follow,\u201d Hernandez said. \u201cTalking with alumni opened my eyes to different opportunities and made me want to keep my options open.\u201d <\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

Perhaps even more valuable than the career insights was the confidence the trip instilled. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cCollege students can get scared about reaching out to people,\u201d Hernandez said. \u201cThis trip increased my confidence to ask for those coffee chats because you realize how important alumni advice is. They can help open doors.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Although delayed flights forced the group to adjust its itinerary, Alaniz said students still made the most of every opportunity. They attended alumni dinners, explored neighborhoods, visited iconic landmarks and, on a free day, pursued their own interests. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

For Hernandez, that meant fulfilling a lifelong dream. A Chicago Cubs fan whose family is originally from Chicago, Hernandez used his free time to attend a Cubs-Giants game at Oracle Park. It was the first Cubs game he had ever seen in person. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Although the Cubs lost, Hernandez said the experience was unforgettable. He picked up an engraved Cubs hat as a souvenir and appreciated having the chance to enjoy the city beyond its professional opportunities. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cEven though I was there to learn, I was still having fun,\u201d he said. \u201cIt was a much-needed vacation after my sophomore year of college. Overall, it was just great activities, exploration and opportunities.\u201d <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
