William Valade is not pictured.<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<p>Six Kalamazoo County high school students seeking to major in STEM-related fields will attend Kalamazoo College in the 2026-27 academic year as recipients of the competitive Heyl Scholarship.\u202f\u202f\u202f&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/heyl.kzoo.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Heyl Scholarship Fund<\/a> was established in 1971 through the will of\u202fDr. Frederick Heyl\u202fand Mrs. Elsie Heyl. Frederick Heyl was the first chemist at The Upjohn Company, later becoming a vice president and the company\u2019s first director of research. When he retired in 1945, he had contributed scientifically to about 80 research papers and patents while also teaching chemistry at K. He maintained a lifelong passion for science and education and was awarded an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kzoo.edu\/about\/history\/honorary-degrees\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">honorary<\/a> Doctor of Science degree from Kalamazoo College in 1937.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Since then, Heyl scholarships have enabled hundreds of high school graduates from Kalamazoo County to attend K for STEM-focused majors or Western Michigan University for nursing, with renewable benefits for up to four years that cover tuition, fees, housing, summer research, study abroad and a book allowance.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The following students will join Kalamazoo College this fall as Heyl Scholars:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Iris Goldstein of Loy Norrix High School and the Kalamazoo Area Math and Science Center (KAMSC)\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Isaac Patrick of Loy Norrix and KAMSC\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Maria Canfield of Loy Norrix and KAMSC\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Simon Beougher of Loy Norrix and KAMSC\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>William Valade of Portage Northern High School and KAMSC\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Rowan Hagenbuch of Comstock High School and KAMSC\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>An additional Heyl scholar, Sage Schrader\u200b of Loy Norrix, will attend the Western Michigan University Bronson School of Nursing.\u202f&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Six Kalamazoo County high school students seeking to major in STEM-related fields will attend Kalamazoo College in 2026-27 as Heyl Scholarship recipients.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":147,"featured_media":27027,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[3],"tags":[],"post_formats":[],"class_list":["post-27020","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-news"],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v22.7 -
