Jillian McLaughlin \u201910 knows how to “be light.”<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

What would you do to remind yourself and others just how much you loved and appreciated your college experience\u2014assuming you only have about $100 to spend?<\/p>\n

You\u2019ll have to go a ways to top Jillian McLaughlin \u201910 <\/strong>who recently treated herself to a tattoo just below her left ribcage of \u201cLux Esto,\u201d K\u2019s Latin motto that means \u201cBe Light.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cIn the past few\u00a0years, I have\u00a0really come to appreciate the unique undergraduate experience I had at K and the friendships forged,\u201d said Jillian, a Grosse Pointe (Mich.) native now working for an anti-poverty think-tank in Boston.<\/p>\n

\u201cI suppose I could have bought a T-shirt or a mug but a tattoo of \u2018Lux Esto\u2019 seemed more epic. So that\u2019s what I did.\u201d<\/p>\n

Jillian\u2019s K experience was a full one. She ran on the Hornet cross country team, wrote for The Index<\/em> student newspaper, worked as a student sustainability coordinator in the College\u2019s Facilities Management Division, and conducted research into political ideology with K Professor of Psychology Gary Gregg. She also served as an intern in U.S. Senator Carl Levin\u2019s office in Washington, D.C.<\/p>\n

During her senior year, the political science major earned a departmental award to travel to Spain and conduct interviews on international human rights law for her Senior Individualized Project, or SIP.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt sounds corny, but no matter where I am, I feel like I\u2019<\/strong>m at home when I\u2019<\/strong>m around other K grads,\u201d Jillian said. \u201cAs I get ready to attend graduate school [in pursuit of an MBA on nonprofit management and impact investing], I wanted a reminder of that experience.\u201d<\/p>\n

She said the tattoo idea was the brainchild of her K classmate and friend Anne Renaud \u201910<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

\u201cShe joked about getting \u2018Lux Esto\u2019 tattoos before we graduated. It didn\u2019t happen but the seeds of my decision were planted.\u201d<\/p>\n
