\u201cCold Weather Catharsis\u201d was the topic of Winter Quarter 2013 Week Three (Jan. 25) Community Reflection<\/span><\/a> in Stetson Chapel. Co-sponsored by the Adventure Living Learning House<\/span><\/a> , several speakers shared ideas on how to combat Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD), spice up the season, stay active, and release the pent-up energy of winter.<\/p>\n

Chaplain Liz Candido \u201900\u00a0welcomed the students in the audience, whom she called \u201cthe few, the proud, the brave.\u201d Student Chaplain and Adventure Housemate, Katie Ring \u201915 outlined her Living Learning House\u2019s recipe for adventurous living, which she said can help shake up winter fatigue. Then Counseling Center<\/a> Director Dr. Pat Ponto defined SAD as \u201ca kind of depression contained in fall and winter and in a specific latitude.\u201d She says one treatment for the seasonal mood swings include light therapy.<\/p>\n

David Graham \u201914, leader of the Active Minds student organization, spoke about how Kalamazoo College has invested in four light therapy lamps, which students can check out when they\u2019re feeling the winter blues. \u201cNobody deserves to feel SAD\u2019s potentially debilitating effects,\u201d he said. Allison Kennedy \u201915 read a comical list poem addressed to herself, reciting all the ways she would not give into \u201cthe buzz kill of winter.\u201d Adventure Housemate Kira Sandiford \u201915 spoke about the Kalamazoo Outing Club<\/a>, of which she is an board member. Sandiford suggested joining the club on a winter escapade of snowshoeing, cross country skiing, ice climbing, or ice fishing. \u201cIt\u2019s a wonderful way to combat SAD,\u201d she said. Adventure Housemate Grace Manger \u201915 said she suffers from SAD herself, and spoke about how she \u201cunwinds\u201d by performing stunts with Cirque du K, K\u2019s circus club.\u00a0Morgan Walker \u201915, another Adventure Housemate, offered some practical advice to staying positive under what he called \u201cthe weight of winter.\u201d Candido closed the event by urging attendees to \u201cfind your winter adventure\u2014something to keep you positive.\u201d<\/p>\n

Friday Chapel programs are called Community Reflections and offer a unique forum for discussion, worship, performance, and community expression each Friday at 10:50 AM; refreshments at 10:30. The entire campus community and general public are invited. Week Four\u2019s Community Reflection is called \u201cWhat\u2019s Love got to do with it? Anti-Racist Activism in the Creation of Beloved Communities\u201d which will feature a conversation about love as an underlying motivator for Social change and Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.\u2019s philosophy of the beloved community as an end result of non-violent social change.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"

Co-sponsored by the <a href=\"https:\/\/reason.kzoo.edu\/reslife\/llhouses\/houses\/\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">Adventure Living Learning House<\/span><\/a> , several speakers shared ideas on how to combat Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD), spice up the season, stay active, and release the pent-up energy of winter.<\/p>\n<p>Chaplain Liz Candido \u201900\u00a0welcomed the students in the audience, whom she called \u201cthe few, the proud, the brave.\u201d Student Chaplain and Adventure Housemate, Katie Ring \u201915 outlined her Living Learning House\u2019s recipe for adventurous living, which she said can help shake up winter fatigue. Then <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kzoo.edu\/studentlife\/?p=counsel\">Counseling Center<\/a> Director Dr. Pat Ponto defined SAD as \u201ca kind of depression contained in fall and winter and in a specific latitude.\u201d She says one treatment for the seasonal mood swings include light therapy.<\/p>\n<p>David Graham \u201914, leader of the Active Minds student organization, spoke about how Kalamazoo College has invested in four light therapy lamps, which students can check out when they\u2019re feeling the winter blues. \u201cNobody deserves to feel SAD\u2019s potentially debilitating effects,\u201d he said. Allison Kennedy \u201915 read a comical list poem addressed to herself, reciting all the ways she would not give into \u201cthe buzz kill of winter.\u201d Adventure Housemate Kira Sandiford \u201915 spoke about the <a href=\"https:\/\/reason.kzoo.edu\/outing\/\">Kalamazoo Outing Club<\/a>, of which she is an board member. Sandiford suggested joining the club on a winter escapade of snowshoeing, cross country skiing, ice climbing, or ice fishing. \u201cIt\u2019s a wonderful way to combat SAD,\u201d she said. Adventure Housemate Grace Manger \u201915 said she suffers from SAD herself, and spoke about how she \u201cunwinds\u201d by performing stunts with Cirque du K, K\u2019s circus club.\u00a0Morgan Walker \u201915, another Adventure Housemate, offered some practical advice to staying positive under what he called \u201cthe weight of winter.\u201d Candido closed the event by urging attendees to \u201cfind your winter adventure\u2014something to keep you positive.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Friday Chapel programs are called Community Reflections and offer a unique forum for discussion, worship, performance, and community expression each Friday at 10:50 AM; refreshments at 10:30. The entire campus community and general public are invited. Week Four\u2019s Community Reflection is called \u201cWhat\u2019s Love got to do with it?
