Sponsored by the <a href=\"https:\/\/reason.kzoo.edu\/servicelearning\/\">Mary Jane Underwood Stryker Institute for Service-Learning<\/a>, several K community members spoke about the importance of food as part of the College\u2019s food vendor selection process continuing this quarter.<\/p>\n<p>Migrant Rights Action Civic Engagement Scholar <strong><span style=\"font-size: small\">Mariah Hennen \u201915 <\/span><\/strong>addressed the crowd of more than 100 students and faculty members on the importance of the food vendor selection. \u201cDecisions always have ramifications, and choosing a dining service provider for Kalamazoo College is no exception,\u201d she said. <strong><span style=\"font-size: small\">Shadae Sutherland \u201914 <\/span><\/strong>spoke about her experience of moving to Kalamazoo from Jamaica, where she was used to eating food her family grew and produced. \u201cThe food that I have had here tastes quite different from the ones I have had in Jamaica. The flavor is very diminished,\u201d she said. She stressed that an ideal food provider for the cafeteria should offer more options for people with dietary restrictions.<\/p>\n<p>Dining Vendor Selection Committee member <strong>DeAngelo Glaze \u201914<\/strong>, <a href=\"https:\/\/reason.kzoo.edu\/csjl\/\">Arcus Center for Social Justice Leadership<\/a> (ACSJL) Administrative Assistant <strong>Lanna Lewis<\/strong>, Associate Professor of English and Farms 2 K faculty advisor <strong>Amelia Katanski \u201992<\/strong>, Student Commission Vice President <strong>Darwin Rodriguez \u201913,<\/strong> and Farms to K Civic Engagement Scholar <strong>Katherine Rapin \u201915 <\/strong>shared their unique perspectives on food justice. By telling stories about their own gastronomic histories from a political, racial, epicurean, genealogical, biological, and cultural standpoint, each speaker encouraged audience members to evaluate their own relationship with food systems in order to participate in the food provider selection process. \u201cWe have the institutional buying power to redefine how our food system works,\u201d said Katanski. \u201cWe can serve as a leader\u2014an institution that puts our values into action.\u201d<\/p>\n<div>\u00a0\u201cEveryone Has a STEAK in It\u201d speakers were (l-r) Shadae Sutherland \u201914, Lanna Lewis (ACSJL), DeAngelo Glaze \u201914, Mariah Hennen \u201915 (CES), Darwin Rodriguez \u201913, Amelia Katanski \u201992 (English,\u00a0 Farms to K), and Katherine Rapin \u201915 (CES).<br \/>\nCommunity Reflection offers a unique forum for discussion, worship, performance, and community expression each Friday at 10:50 AM (refreshments at 10:30) in Stetson Chapel. Implications of How We Eat at K\u201d was the theme of Winter Quarter 2013 Week One (Jan. 11) <a href=\"http:\/\/reason.kzoo.edu\/chapel\/reflection\/\">Community Reflection <\/a>in Stetson Chapel. Sponsored by the <a href=\"https:\/\/reason.kzoo.edu\/servicelearning\/\">Mary Jane Underwood Stryker Institute for Service-Learning<\/a>, several K community members spoke about the importance of food as part of the College\u2019s food vendor selection process continuing this quarter.<\/p>\n<p>Migrant Rights Action Civic Engagement Scholar <strong><span style=\"font-size: small\">Mariah Hennen \u201915 <\/span><\/strong>addressed the crowd of more than 100 students and faculty members on the importance of the food vendor selection. \u201cDecisions always have ramifications, and choosing a dining service provider for Kalamazoo College is no exception,\u201d she said. <strong><span style=\"font-size: small\">Shadae Sutherland \u201914 <\/span><\/strong>spoke about her experience of moving to Kalamazoo from Jamaica, where she was used to eating food her family grew and produced. \u201cThe food that I have had here tastes quite different from the ones I have had in Jamaica. The flavor is very diminished,\u201d she said. She stressed that an ideal food provider for the cafeteria should offer more options for people with dietary restrictions.<\/p>\n<p>Dining Vendor Selection Committee member <strong>DeAngelo Glaze \u201914<\/strong>, <a href=\"https:\/\/reason.kzoo.edu\/csjl\/\">Arcus Center for Social Justice Leadership<\/a> (ACSJL) Administrative Assistant <strong>Lanna Lewis<\/strong>, Associate Professor of English and Farms 2 K faculty advisor <strong>Amelia Katanski \u201992<\/strong>, Student Commission Vice President <strong>Darwin Rodriguez \u201913,<\/strong> and Farms to K Civic Engagement Scholar <strong>Katherine Rapin \u201915 <\/strong>shared their unique perspectives on food justice.
