Kalamazoo College’s Festival Playhouse produced “Well-Intentioned
White People” last term. This winter, its theatre events include
two one-person productions and a satirical vignette about
Black cultural issues.<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n

Make plans now to attend three theatre events during the winter term at Kalamazoo College, including two one-person productions and a satirical vignette about Black cultural issues. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

First, the Festival Playhouse will produce\u00a0The Conviction of Lady Lorraine,<\/em>\u00a0written and performed by\u00a0Dwandra\u00a0Nickole\u00a0Lampkin,\u00a0and offer\u00a0it\u00a0free to\u00a0the\u00a0community as\u00a0a\u00a0part of\u00a0K\u2019s\u00a0Martin Luther King Jr. week celebrations.\u00a0Support for this production is provided by the Arts Fund of Kalamazoo County, a program of the Arts Council of Greater Kalamazoo.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Directed by Dee Dee Batteast, the January 14 and 15 play is set in Memphis near the Lorraine Motel where King was\u202fassassinated. A writer, played by Lampkin, has a brief but powerful encounter with a homeless woman, Lady\u202fLorraine. The writer finds herself transformed by Lady Lorraine\u2019s 20-year quest to\u202fright a social wrong.\u202fOne year later, the writer returns to Memphis, hoping that Lady Lorraine will share her full story of conviction. The writer quickly finds herself asking new questions about\u202fmany things, and finding that Lady Lorraine is not the only one on a quest for\u202frecognition. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Lampkin serves as an associate professor of theatre at Western Michigan University. Her career spans two decades with television credits that include Law & Order<\/em>, Law & Order SVU<\/em>, Third Watch<\/em> and Wonderland<\/em>. She has performed at the Tony-Award winning Denver Center Theatre, the Huntington Theatre in Boston, the Human Race Theatre Company in Dayton and the Indiana Repertory Theatre in Indianapolis. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Tickets for The Conviction of Lady Lorraine<\/em>, which is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. in the Playhouse at 129 Thompson St. both days, are available online<\/a>. Please note that currently both proof of vaccination and masks are required for admittance to the theatre.   <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Then, from February 10\u201313, Matthew Swarthout \u201922\u202fwill undertake Sir Ian McKellen\u2019s one-person show, Acting Shakespeare<\/em> in this year\u2019s Senior Performance Series. The show will encompass both Swarthout\u2019s and\u202fMcKellen\u2019s insights into Shakespeare\u2019s plays, featuring monologues and scenes from\u202fRomeo and Juliet<\/em>,\u202fA Midsummer Night\u2019s dream<\/em>,\u202fHamlet<\/em>,\u202fMacbeth<\/em>\u202fand more. Watch the Festival Playhouse website<\/a> for ticket information for the show at the Dungeon Theatre, 139 Thompson St.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Finally, from February 24\u201327, a quick-witted comedy will follow in the Festival Playhouse\u2019s 58th<\/sup> season themed \u201cBlack is Beautiful: An Ode to Black Life, Love and Strength.\u201d BLACKS+PHATS<\/em> will examine themes such as beauty ideals, relationship dynamics and levels of attraction while searching for enlightenment in stereotypes. Current K students are eligible to audition<\/a>. Watch the Festival Playhouse website<\/a> for ticket information. The show will take place in the Festival Playhouse at 129 Thompson St. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
