Bringing\u00a0fewer non-necessities\u00a0to campus on move-in day helps students avoid clutter, clean more easily\u00a0and provide themselves with more personal space\u00a0when the term starts.<\/p>\n<p>That theme is especially important\u00a0for first-year students\u00a0joining the K community on Tuesday, Sept. 8. It\u2019s good to consult Residential Living\u2019s list\u00a0of\u00a0what to bring to campus\u00a0for common essentials\u00a0before arriving for\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/fye.kzoo.edu\/orientation-schedule\/\">orientation<\/a>, but packing light is advisable.<\/p>\n<p>A few decorating supplies are reasonable,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.kzoo.edu\/news\/what-to-bring-to-campus\/\">some students have said<\/a>.\u00a0Still,\u00a0make sure\u00a0you\u00a0adhere\u00a0to the list of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/reslife.kzoo.edu\/housingandboardpolicies\/#208\">prohibited items<\/a>. And remember, you can buy many of your necessities \u2013 such as school supplies, cleaning supplies, toiletries and supplemental lighting \u2013 in Kalamazoo stores and thrift shops after you take a visual assessment of your space\u00a0if it\u00a0lightens your load\u00a0when you\u2019re traveling.<\/p>\n<p>In contrast, you will\u00a0definitely\u00a0want to\u00a0pack\u00a0some precautionary items\u00a0this year as a result of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/covid.kzoo.edu\/\">COVID-19<\/a>.\u00a0Make sure to bring:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Several\u00a0face\u00a0masks.<\/strong>\u00a0Cloth or disposable masks\u00a0without ventilation valves\u00a0that fit snugly yet comfortably over your\u00a0mouth and nose work best, and are required in shared interior campus spaces.<\/li>\n<li><strong>A\u00a0thermometer.<\/strong>\u00a0Students will be expected to self-screen on a daily basis to ensure they\u2019re aware of any symptoms that could be signs of COVID-19, making this a necessity.<\/li>\n<li><strong>An air purifier.<\/strong>\u00a0According to the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.epa.gov\/coronavirus\/air-cleaners-hvac-filters-and-coronavirus-covid-19\">Environmental Protection Agency<\/a>, air cleaners or purifiers reduce indoor air pollutants including viruses without sacrificing indoor comfort.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Alternative\u00a0bedding\u00a0and\u00a0towels.<\/strong>\u00a0In addition to what you bring for daily use, spare sets will be\u00a0convenient should students need to be quarantined.<\/li>\n<li><strong>A\u00a0travel\u00a0or\u00a0duffel bag.<\/strong> Students who are recommended for quarantine will need one for their personal items.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Outside the prohibited items,\u00a0what\u00a0you\u00a0bring to campus is ultimately a personal decision.\u00a0But if you\u2019re unsure about a certain item, follow the \u201cwhen in doubt, leave it out\u201d school of thought. You can always have something shipped to you,\u00a0order it online, buy it locally or bring it to campus after winter break.<\/p>\n<p>We&#8217;re excited to welcome the incoming class to the Kalamazoo College family. \u201cwhen in doubt, leave it out\u201d school of thought when packing for move-in day at Kalamazoo College.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>If you consult Kalamazoo College students and alumni about living in K\u2019s residence halls, you\u2019ll hear a common theme: Less is more. Bringing\u00a0fewer non-necessities\u00a0to campus on move-in day helps students avoid clutter, clean more easily\u00a0and provide themselves with more personal space\u00a0when the term starts.<\/p>\n<p>That theme is especially important\u00a0for first-year students\u00a0joining the K community on Tuesday, Sept. 8. It\u2019s good to consult Residential Living\u2019s list\u00a0of\u00a0what to bring to campus\u00a0for common essentials\u00a0before arriving for\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/fye.kzoo.edu\/orientation-schedule\/\">orientation<\/a>, but packing light is advisable.<\/p>\n<p>A few decorating supplies are reasonable,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.kzoo.edu\/news\/what-to-bring-to-campus\/\">some students have said<\/a>.\u00a0Still,\u00a0make sure\u00a0you\u00a0adhere\u00a0to the list of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/reslife.kzoo.edu\/housingandboardpolicies\/#208\">prohibited items<\/a>. And remember, you can buy many of your necessities \u2013 such as school supplies, cleaning supplies, toiletries and supplemental lighting \u2013 in Kalamazoo stores and thrift shops after you take a visual assessment of your space\u00a0if it\u00a0lightens your load\u00a0when you\u2019re traveling.<\/p>\n<p>In contrast, you will\u00a0definitely\u00a0want to\u00a0pack\u00a0some precautionary items\u00a0this year as a result of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/covid.kzoo.edu\/\">COVID-19<\/a>.\u00a0Make sure to bring:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Several\u00a0face\u00a0masks.<\/strong>\u00a0Cloth or disposable masks\u00a0without ventilation valves\u00a0that fit snugly yet comfortably over your\u00a0mouth and nose work best, and are required in shared interior campus spaces.<\/li>\n<li><strong>A\u00a0thermometer.<\/strong>\u00a0Students will be expected to self-screen on a daily basis to ensure they\u2019re aware of any symptoms that could be signs of COVID-19, making this a necessity.<\/li>\n<li><strong>An air purifier.<\/strong>\u00a0According to the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.epa.gov\/coronavirus\/air-cleaners-hvac-filters-and-coronavirus-covid-19\">Environmental Protection Agency<\/a>, air cleaners or purifiers reduce indoor air pollutants including viruses without sacrificing indoor comfort.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Alternative\u00a0bedding\u00a0and\u00a0towels.<\/strong>\u00a0In addition to what you bring for daily use, spare sets will be\u00a0convenient should students need to be quarantined.<\/li>\n<li><strong>A\u00a0travel\u00a0or\u00a0duffel bag.<\/strong> Students who are recommended for quarantine will need one for their personal items.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Outside the prohibited items,\u00a0what\u00a0you\u00a0bring to campus is ultimately a personal decision.\u00a0But if you\u2019re unsure about a certain item, follow the \u201cwhen in doubt, leave it out\u201d school of thought. You can always have something shipped to you,\u00a0order it online, buy it locally or bring it to campus after winter break.<\/p>\n<p>We&#8217;re excited to welcome the incoming class to the Kalamazoo College family.
