{"id":13689,"date":"2020-07-09T10:11:49","date_gmt":"2020-07-09T14:11:49","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.kzoo.edu\/news\/?p=13689"},"modified":"2022-03-21T16:13:03","modified_gmt":"2022-03-21T20:13:03","slug":"deer-populations","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.kzoo.edu\/news\/deer-populations\/","title":{"rendered":"K Students Need Your Help Analyzing Deer Populations"},"content":{"rendered":"<figure id=\"attachment_13691\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-13691\" style=\"width: 467px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-13691\" src=\"\/\/www.kzoo.edu\/news\/files\/2020\/07\/Jake-Osen-Researching-Deer-Populations-600x338.jpg\" alt=\"Jake Osen Researching Deer Populations\" width=\"467\" height=\"267\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-13691\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Jake Osen &#8217;21 examines foliage for signs of what might be attracting deer populations to a neighborhood in the Kalamazoo area.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>If you\u2019re a citizen scientist who would like to help two Kalamazoo College students with their <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kzoo.edu\/k-plan\/sip\/\">Senior Individualized Projects (SIP)<\/a>, there\u2019s an app for that.<\/p>\n<p>Jake Osen and Zach Brazil, both \u201921, are tabulating deer in Kalamazoo-area neighborhoods and need volunteers to submit pictures through the free mobile app <a href=\"https:\/\/www.inaturalist.org\/\">iNaturalist<\/a> of the deer they find. The pictures will help the students identify where deer populations are reaching problematic levels in local neighborhoods.<\/p>\n<p>When pictures are uploaded, the app helps identify the variety of deer the user has found and pinpoints their location. Osen, Brazil and other scientists then will confirm what the app finds and use the location data to ascertain what\u2019s attracting deer to the area.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_13693\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-13693\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-13693\" src=\"\/\/www.kzoo.edu\/news\/files\/2020\/07\/Zach-Brazil-Researching-Deer-Populations-300x400.jpg\" alt=\"Zach Brazil Researching Deer Populations\" width=\"300\" height=\"400\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.kzoo.edu\/news\/files\/2020\/07\/Zach-Brazil-Researching-Deer-Populations-300x400.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.kzoo.edu\/news\/files\/2020\/07\/Zach-Brazil-Researching-Deer-Populations-112x150.jpg 112w, https:\/\/www.kzoo.edu\/news\/files\/2020\/07\/Zach-Brazil-Researching-Deer-Populations-600x800.jpg 600w, https:\/\/www.kzoo.edu\/news\/files\/2020\/07\/Zach-Brazil-Researching-Deer-Populations-225x300.jpg 225w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-13693\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Zach Brazil &#8217;21 examines foliage for signs of what might be attracting deer populations to a neighborhood in the Kalamazoo area.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>They expect a loss of habitat caused by encroaching neighborhoods to be a primary cause, although others are likely to be contributing factors.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSome neighborhoods have creeks and parks,\u201d Osen said. \u201cSome neighborhoods have residents who feed deer. Once we have a rough estimate of the deer population, we can compare the different areas and see what\u2019s bringing deer into the neighborhoods.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Participants can be casual photographers and there\u2019s no need for professional-quality images. When asked for tips on photographing deer, Osen and Brazil said it\u2019s easiest to find them earlier in the morning or later at night. It can be difficult to maintain complete silence, but deer are a little less skittish in neighborhoods where they typically are near people anyway.<\/p>\n<p>To download the iNaturalist app, go into the App Store (iPhone) or Google Play (Android) on a smartphone and search for iNaturalist. After downloading it, create a free account using an email address, social media account or Google account.<\/p>\n<p>The app will ask to use your location. After confirming permission, use the &#8220;Explore\u201d tab to find observations submitted by others. Click the &#8220;More\u201d tab and search \u201cProjects\u201d for \u201cDeer populations in the residential areas of Kalamazoo\u201d to volunteer for Osen and Brazil.<\/p>\n<p>After joining, simply upload the pictures of deer you find in Kalamazoo.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019d appreciate help from anyone that\u2019s able to download the app,\u201d Brazil said. \u201cWe\u2019re hoping to have our observations done by August. We hope to have most of the deer identified in the pictures by mid-August and a first draft of the SIP done by the first or second week of the trimester. But we\u2019d encourage people to keep posting images. populations to a neighborhood in the Kalamazoo area.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>If you\u2019re a citizen scientist who would like to help two Kalamazoo College students with their <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kzoo.edu\/k-plan\/sip\/\">Senior Individualized Projects (SIP)<\/a>, there\u2019s an app for that.<\/p>\n<p>Jake Osen and Zach Brazil, both \u201921, are tabulating deer in Kalamazoo-area neighborhoods and need volunteers to submit pictures through the free mobile app <a href=\"https:\/\/www.inaturalist.org\/\">iNaturalist<\/a> of the deer they find. The pictures will help the students identify where deer populations are reaching problematic levels in local neighborhoods.<\/p>\n<p>When pictures are uploaded, the app helps identify the variety of deer the user has found and pinpoints their location. Osen, Brazil and other scientists then will confirm what the app finds and use the location data to ascertain what\u2019s attracting deer to the area.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_13693\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-13693\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-13693\" src=\"\/\/www.kzoo.edu\/news\/files\/2020\/07\/Zach-Brazil-Researching-Deer-Populations-300x400.jpg\" alt=\"Zach Brazil Researching Deer Populations\" width=\"300\" height=\"400\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-13693\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Zach Brazil &#8217;21 examines foliage for signs of what might be attracting deer populations to a neighborhood in the Kalamazoo area.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>They expect a loss of habitat caused by encroaching neighborhoods to be a primary cause, although others are likely to be contributing factors.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSome neighborhoods have creeks and parks,\u201d Osen said. \u201cSome neighborhoods have residents who feed deer. Once we have a rough estimate of the deer population, we can compare the different areas and see what\u2019s bringing deer into the neighborhoods.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Participants can be casual photographers and there\u2019s no need for professional-quality images. When asked for tips on photographing deer, Osen and Brazil said it\u2019s easiest to find them earlier in the morning or later at night. It can be difficult to maintain complete silence, but deer are a little less skittish in neighborhoods where they typically are near people anyway.<\/p>\n<p>To download the iNaturalist app, go into the App Store (iPhone) or Google Play (Android) on a smartphone and search for iNaturalist. After downloading it, create a free account using an email address, social media account or Google account.<\/p>\n<p>The app will ask to use your location. After confirming permission, use the &#8220;Explore\u201d tab to find observations submitted by others. Click the &#8220;More\u201d tab and search \u201cProjects\u201d for \u201cDeer populations in the residential areas of Kalamazoo\u201d to volunteer for Osen and Brazil.<\/p>\n<p>After joining, simply upload the pictures of deer you find in Kalamazoo.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019d appreciate help from anyone that\u2019s able to download the app,\u201d Brazil said. \u201cWe\u2019re hoping to have our observations done by August. We hope to have most of the deer identified in the pictures by mid-August and a first draft of the SIP done by the first or second week of the trimester. But we\u2019d encourage people to keep posting images.
