Fourteen students in Nayda Collazo-Llorens\u2019 digital art course were transported into a world filled with structures developed from their imaginations through virtual reality.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

Exclamations such as \u201cWow!\u201d and \u201cCool!\u201d were emanating from Light Fine Arts last week. That\u2019s because students were witnessing the dazzling results of a partnership between the Art Department<\/a> and the College\u2019s Center for New Media Design (CNMD)<\/a>: a virtual reality demonstration depicting projects from Nayda Collazo-Llorens\u2019 digital art course.<\/p>\n

The 14 students in the course were transported into a world filled with structures developed from their imaginations including domed mazes, star-shaped-shadow-casting trellises and cleverly arranged hexagonal pillars, allowing them to climb, observe and interact with everyone\u2019s creations.<\/p>\n

Their project, which Collazo-Llorens titled Architectural Aura, required students to design complex, three-dimensional structures capturing fantastical facades rather than traditional buildings. Students considered their structures from multiple viewpoints, including the interiors, and added perspectives based on volume and mass, proportions and balance.<\/p>\n

Students then used computer-aided design tools such as TinkerCAD \u2014 an app for 3D design, electronics and coding \u2014 to develop them, and turn them into tangible models through three MakerBot 3D printers<\/a> including one in the CNMD. Educational Technology Specialist Josh Moon and Peer Design Consultant Faith Barnett \u201921 later spent about two weeks transforming the 3D models into virtual reality.<\/p>\n

The experience was a hit for the class\u2019s students including Gaby Cordova, an English major from Los Angeles, and Maren Prophit, a biology and art double major from Grosse Pointe, Michigan, who were impressed to see how small objects could be enlarged into a world where students could interact with them.<\/p>\n

The project was especially practical for Prophit, who interned last summer with Mackinac State Historic Park, a family of living history museums and nature parks in northern Michigan\u2019s Straits of Mackinac. There, she saw sketch art re-created and exhibits designed with help from virtual reality, reflecting her own need to learn digital processes.<\/p>\n

Barnett also received hands-on work in developing virtual reality for a public presentation for the first time.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere was a lot of fine tuning to solve some minor issues because some of the graphics were jittery,\u201d Barnett said. \u201cBut the best part of VR is you can do things with it that are impossible in the real world.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"

That\u2019s because students were witnessing the dazzling results of a partnership between the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kzoo.edu\/programs\/art\/\">Art Department<\/a> and the College\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/reason.kzoo.edu\/learningcommons\/design\/\">Center for New Media Design (CNMD)<\/a>: a virtual reality demonstration depicting projects from Nayda Collazo-Llorens\u2019 digital art course.<\/p>\n<p>The 14 students in the course were transported into a world filled with structures developed from their imaginations including domed mazes, star-shaped-shadow-casting trellises and cleverly arranged hexagonal pillars, allowing them to climb, observe and interact with everyone\u2019s creations.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_12275\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-12275\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-12275\" src=\"\/\/www.kzoo.edu\/news\/files\/2019\/05\/Virtual-Reality-Demonstration-Buildings-2-300x169.jpg\" alt=\"Virtual Reality Demonstration Buildings 2\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-12275\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Fourteen students in Nayda Collazo-Llorens\u2019 digital art course were transported into a world filled with structures developed from their imaginations through virtual reality.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<figure id=\"attachment_12278\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-12278\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-12278\" src=\"\/\/www.kzoo.edu\/news\/files\/2019\/05\/Virtual-Reality-Demonstration-5-300x168.jpg\" alt=\"Virtual Reality Demonstration 5\" width=\"300\" height=\"168\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-12278\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Fourteen students in Nayda Collazo-Llorens\u2019 digital art course were transported into a world filled with structures developed from their imaginations through virtual reality.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Their project, which Collazo-Llorens titled Architectural Aura, required students to design complex, three-dimensional structures capturing fantastical facades rather than traditional buildings. Students considered their structures from multiple viewpoints, including the interiors, and added perspectives based on volume and mass, proportions and balance.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_12280\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-12280\" style=\"width: 479px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-12280\" src=\"\/\/www.kzoo.edu\/news\/files\/2019\/05\/Virtual-Reality-Demonstration-Maren-Prophit-600x450.jpg\" alt=\"Maren Prophit\" width=\"479\" height=\"362\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-12280\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Maren Prophit was among 14 students in Nayda Collazo-Llorens\u2019 digital art course who received a demonstration of her work in virtual reality.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Students then used computer-aided design tools such as TinkerCAD \u2014 an app for 3D design, electronics and coding \u2014 to develop them, and turn them into tangible models through three <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kzoo.edu\/news\/garlandgift\/\">MakerBot 3D printers<\/a> including one in the CNMD. Educational Technology Specialist Josh Moon and Peer Design Consultant Faith Barnett \u201921 later spent about two weeks transforming the 3D models into virtual reality.<\/p>\n<p>The experience was a hit for the class\u2019s students including Gaby Cordova, an English major from Los Angeles, and Maren Prophit, a biology and art double major from Grosse Pointe, Michigan, who were impressed to see how small objects could be enlarged into a world where students could interact with them.<\/p>\n<p>The project was especially practical for Prophit, who interned last summer with Mackinac State Historic Park, a family of living history museums and nature parks in northern Michigan\u2019s Straits of Mackinac.
