Sixteen Kalamazoo College students took advantage of a winter break day to network with professionals \u2014 including several K graduates \u2014 in the beer-making facilities at Bell\u2019s Brewery, named the top-ranked brewery in America in 2018 by the American Homebrewer\u2019s Association.<\/p>\n

The trip was the latest K-Trek<\/a> offering from the Center for Career and Professional Development (CCPD)<\/a>, which provides K students with in-person, immersive discussions with leaders in various industries, many of them K alumni.<\/p>\n

CCPD Assistant Director Rachel Wood helped plan the event and attended, noting the students asked a panel of Bell\u2019s Brewery representatives, including founder and Kalamazoo College alumnus Larry Bell \u201980, engaging questions about the beer industry and the process of starting a business.<\/p>\n

In their responses, panelists gave advice about what they look for in prospective employees, noting the importance of an applicant seeking a work-culture fit rather than just an appealing job description. For example, \u201cat Bell\u2019s, you kind of need to appreciate beer, but chances are you will be working in something other than brewing,\u201d Wood said. Regardless of the role, \u201cit\u2019s important to find a place to work where you can show up and it\u2019s not just work.\u201d<\/p>\n

Aside from the founder, the Bell\u2019s Brewery panelists included five K alumni from a variety of majors who graduated between 1990 and 2014. All of them noted how well K prepared them for the work force.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe students hear similar advice from [CCPD] career coaches, but it\u2019s always extremely helpful for them to hear it from people in the field,\u201d Wood said.<\/p>\n

Bell himself discussed having multiple lifelong interests, all of which were nurtured at K through the liberal arts and sciences, including theater.<\/p>\n

Bell noted that \u201che played the character Oberon in a sixth-grade production of Midsummer Night\u2019s Dream<\/em>, and that inspired him to later name a beer Oberon,\u201d Wood said. In Bell, \u201cthe students saw someone who is living a liberal arts life.\u201d<\/p>\n

After an hour-long lunch, the K students split into smaller groups where they embarked on brewery tours, allowing them to witness the full process of brewing beer.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt was nice seeing the full process because anybody attending could\u2019ve had any level of knowledge of beer making going in,\u201d Wood said. \u201cWe sampled three different types of barley to see how it could impact flavor, and there were students taking video\u201d to retain what they learned.<\/p>\n

According to the Bell’s Brewery website<\/a>, Bell founded the company on Sept. 19, 1985, when he sold his first commercial beer after brewing it in a 15-gallon soup pot. Bell\u2019s has had several milestones since, including selling outside Michigan for the first time in 1990, opening Michigan\u2019s first on-site brew pub in Kalamazoo in 1993, opening its Comstock brewery in 2003, and expanding the Eccentric Caf\u00e9 in 2015. Today, Kalamazoo County is number one in the state of Michigan in the production of craft beer, and Bell\u2019s is one of Michigan\u2019s most famous brands.<\/p>\n

While many K-treks venture out on multi-day experiences in cities such as San Francisco, New York City and Chicago, there are plenty of industries to explore in K\u2019s backyard. Along with Bell\u2019s, local K-Treks have included trips to Kellogg\u2019s in Battle Creek, Stryker in Kalamazoo and Steelcase in Grand Rapids. the latest <a href=\"http:\/\/reason.kzoo.edu\/ccd\/Ktreks\/\">K-Trek<\/a> offering from the <a href=\"http:\/\/reason.kzoo.edu\/ccd\/\">Center for Career and Professional Development (CCPD)<\/a>, which provides K students with in-person, immersive discussions with leaders in various industries, many of them K alumni.<\/p>\n<p>CCPD Assistant Director Rachel Wood helped plan the event and attended, noting the students asked a panel of Bell\u2019s Brewery representatives, including founder and Kalamazoo College alumnus Larry Bell \u201980, engaging questions about the beer industry and the process of starting a business.<\/p>\n<p>In their responses, panelists gave advice about what they look for in prospective employees, noting the importance of an applicant seeking a work-culture fit rather than just an appealing job description. For example, \u201cat Bell\u2019s, you kind of need to appreciate beer, but chances are you will be working in something other than brewing,\u201d Wood said. Regardless of the role, \u201cit\u2019s important to find a place to work where you can show up and it\u2019s not just work.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_11884\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-11884\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-11884\" src=\"\/\/www.kzoo.edu\/news\/files\/2019\/02\/cMUMMA-CCPD-K-to-Bells-Brews-Networking-0042-300x207.jpg\" alt=\"Bell\u2019s founder Larry Bell talks with students\" width=\"300\" height=\"207\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-11884\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Bell\u2019s founder Larry Bell talks with students about his business and the beer industry during the latest K-Trek, K to Bell\u2019s.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Aside from the founder, the Bell\u2019s Brewery panelists included five K alumni from a variety of majors who graduated between 1990 and 2014. All of them noted how well K prepared them for the work force.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe students hear similar advice from [CCPD] career coaches, but it\u2019s always extremely helpful for them to hear it from people in the field,\u201d Wood said.<\/p>\n<p>Bell himself discussed having multiple lifelong interests, all of which were nurtured at K through the liberal arts and sciences, including theater.<\/p>\n<p>Bell noted that \u201che played the character Oberon in a sixth-grade production of <em>Midsummer Night\u2019s Dream<\/em>, and that inspired him to later name a beer Oberon,\u201d Wood said. In Bell, \u201cthe students saw someone who is living a liberal arts life.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_11886\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-11886\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-11886\" src=\"\/\/www.kzoo.edu\/news\/files\/2019\/02\/cMUMMA-CCPD-K-to-Bells-Brews-Networking-lo-0133-copy-300x209.jpg\" alt=\"Bell\u2019s brewery tour\" width=\"300\" height=\"209\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-11886\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Kalamazoo College students participated in a Bell\u2019s Brewery tour during the latest K-Trek, K to Bell\u2019s, offered through the Center for Career and Professional Development.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>After an hour-long lunch, the K students split into smaller groups where they embarked on brewery tours, allowing them to witness the full process of brewing beer.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was nice seeing the full process because anybody attending could\u2019ve had any level of knowledge of beer making going in,\u201d Wood said. \u201cWe sampled three different types of barley to see how it could impact flavor, and there were students taking video\u201d to retain what they learned.<\/p>\n<p>According to the Bell’s Brewery <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bellsbeer.com\/\">website<\/a>, Bell founded the company on Sept. 19, 1985, when he sold his first commercial beer after brewing it in a 15-gallon soup pot. Bell\u2019s has had several milestones since, including selling outside Michigan for the first time in 1990, opening Michigan\u2019s first on-site brew pub in Kalamazoo in 1993, opening its Comstock brewery in 2003, and expanding the Eccentric Caf\u00e9 in 2015. Today, Kalamazoo County is number one in the state of Michigan in the production of craft beer, and Bell\u2019s is one of Michigan\u2019s most famous brands.<\/p>\n<p>While many K-treks venture out on multi-day experiences in cities such as San Francisco, New York City and Chicago, there are plenty of industries to explore in K\u2019s backyard. Along with Bell\u2019s, local K-Treks have included trips to Kellogg\u2019s in Battle Creek, Stryker in Kalamazoo and Steelcase in Grand Rapids. Wood said other local K-Treks are being planned and students should stay tuned to find out where they will go.
