{"id":11357,"date":"2018-10-03T09:10:26","date_gmt":"2018-10-03T13:10:26","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.kzoo.edu\/news\/?p=11357"},"modified":"2023-01-17T11:22:01","modified_gmt":"2023-01-17T15:22:01","slug":"alzheimers-research","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.kzoo.edu\/news\/alzheimers-research\/","title":{"rendered":"Grant Empowers Alzheimer&#8217;s Research at K"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Kalamazoo College <a href=\"http:\/\/reason.kzoo.edu\/biology\/facstaff\/bmoore\/\">Professor of Biology Blaine Moore<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/reason.kzoo.edu\/biology\/facstaff\/jlangeland\/\">Upjohn Professor of Life Sciences Jim Langeland<\/a> \u201986 have secured a National Science Foundation (NSF) grant worth more than $440,000 over three years to help K students research the origin and evolution of key proteins involved in Alzheimer\u2019s disease.<\/p>\n<p>The research will examine the evolutionary origins of two interacting protein molecules, the beta-secretase enzyme (BACE1) and the amyloid beta (A-beta) sequence within the Amyloid Precursor Protein (APP). Moore and Upjohn Professor of Life Sciences Jim Langeland have secured a National Science Foundation grant worth more than $440,000 that will empower students to perform Alzheimer&#8217;s research regarding the degenerative brain disease&#8217;s key proteins.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Langeland said such work will have no direct therapeutic application and won\u2019t offer a specific cure for the degenerative brain disease. It could, however, lead to future research toward such outcomes. The immediate impact of the grant is the recruitment of underrepresented minorities and first-generation college students to work on the project.<\/p>\n<p>Bright and motivated K students generally are recruited by word of mouth for such projects, which can inspire their <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kzoo.edu\/k-plan\/sip\/\">senior individualized projects<\/a> (SIPs). Such a setup provides students with hands-on experience and independent scholarship, which are two of the four key tenets to the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kzoo.edu\/k-plan\/\"><em>K-Plan<\/em><\/a>, Kalamazoo College\u2019s distinctive approach to an education in the liberal arts and sciences.<\/p>\n<p>The grant, worth a total of $444,941, also represents a rare opportunity for students to participate in research with, and benefit from, two professors with varied expertise. Langeland works with molecular genetics, developmental biology and evolution, and Moore is a neurobiologist who examines neurodegeneration and cell death in particular diseases.<\/p>\n<p>Moore said, \u201cThis grant is unique in its interdisciplinary approach to a neurodegenerative disorder. Most scientists in the Alzheimer\u2019s field are focused on molecular mechanisms, not evolutionary context. It\u2019s only at a liberal arts college that you can you find professors with such disparate backgrounds working together with students on a project like this. It\u2019s a perfect confluence of skillsets.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Both professors said the grant represents the culmination of about 10 years of partnering to secure such funds and opportunities for students, providing a satisfaction unsurpassed in their careers. The fact that the two are friends as well as colleagues makes this research particularly satisfying. It also continues a notable year for K\u2019s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kzoo.edu\/programs\/biology\/\">Biology Department<\/a>, which has been involved with:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Megan Hoinville \u201918 being the first K undergraduate since 1997 to receive an <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kzoo.edu\/news\/national-science-foundation\/\">NSF fellowship<\/a>;<\/li>\n<li>the Sherman Fairchild Foundation providing a $247,500 grant to fund stipends of $4,000 apiece for students in biology, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kzoo.edu\/programs\/chemistry\/\">chemistry<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kzoo.edu\/programs\/physics\/\">physics<\/a> to conduct <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kzoo.edu\/news\/student-research-grant\/\">summer research<\/a>;<\/li>\n<li>a $250,000 grant from the Arthur Vining Davis Foundations benefiting <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kzoo.edu\/news\/environmental-education-grant\/\">environmental education<\/a> and K\u2019s Center for <a href=\"https:\/\/envirostewardship.kzoo.edu\/\">Environmental Stewardship<\/a>; and<\/li>\n<li>K receiving a $1 million, five-year grant from the Howard Hughes Medical Institute to find ways to better serve math and science students from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kzoo.edu\/news\/inclusive-science-math\/\">underrepresented demographic groups<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>NSF is an independent federal agency created by Congress in 1950 to promote the progress of science and advance national health, prosperity and welfare, making such research and developing future scientists a priority. The findings will further the general understanding of key Alzheimer\u2019s proteins, specifically how and when they evolved their pathogenic interaction.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_11363\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-11363\" style=\"width: 584px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-large wp-image-11363\" src=\"\/\/www.kzoo.edu\/news\/files\/2018\/10\/Alzheimers-Research-NSF-Grant-600x450.jpg\" alt=\"Student Prepares for Alzheimer's Research\" width=\"584\" height=\"438\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-11363\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Nkatha Mwenda &#8217;19, a biology major from Grand Rapids, Michigan, performs research in Professor of Biology Blaine Moore&#8217;s lab. Moore and Upjohn Professor of Life Sciences Jim Langeland have secured a National Science Foundation grant worth more than $440,000 that will empower students to perform Alzheimer&#8217;s research regarding the degenerative brain disease&#8217;s key proteins.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Langeland said such work will have no direct therapeutic application and won\u2019t offer a specific cure for the degenerative brain disease. It could, however, lead to future research toward such outcomes. The immediate impact of the grant is the recruitment of underrepresented minorities and first-generation college students to work on the project.<\/p>\n<p>Bright and motivated K students generally are recruited by word of mouth for such projects, which can inspire their <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kzoo.edu\/k-plan\/sip\/\">senior individualized projects<\/a> (SIPs). Such a setup provides students with hands-on experience and independent scholarship, which are two of the four key tenets to the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kzoo.edu\/k-plan\/\"><em>K-Plan<\/em><\/a>, Kalamazoo College\u2019s distinctive approach to an education in the liberal arts and sciences.<\/p>\n<p>The grant, worth a total of $444,941, also represents a rare opportunity for students to participate in research with, and benefit from, two professors with varied expertise. Langeland works with molecular genetics, developmental biology and evolution, and Moore is a neurobiologist who examines neurodegeneration and cell death in particular diseases.<\/p>\n<p>Moore said, \u201cThis grant is unique in its interdisciplinary approach to a neurodegenerative disorder. Most scientists in the Alzheimer\u2019s field are focused on molecular mechanisms, not evolutionary context. It\u2019s only at a liberal arts college that you can you find professors with such disparate backgrounds working together with students on a project like this. It\u2019s a perfect confluence of skillsets.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Both professors said the grant represents the culmination of about 10 years of partnering to secure such funds and opportunities for students, providing a satisfaction unsurpassed in their careers. The fact that the two are friends as well as colleagues makes this research particularly satisfying. It also continues a notable year for K\u2019s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kzoo.edu\/programs\/biology\/\">Biology Department<\/a>, which has been involved with:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Megan Hoinville \u201918 being the first K undergraduate since 1997 to receive an <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kzoo.edu\/news\/national-science-foundation\/\">NSF fellowship<\/a>;<\/li>\n<li>the Sherman Fairchild Foundation providing a $247,500 grant to fund stipends of $4,000 apiece for students in biology, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kzoo.edu\/programs\/chemistry\/\">chemistry<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kzoo.edu\/programs\/physics\/\">physics<\/a> to conduct <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kzoo.edu\/news\/student-research-grant\/\">summer research<\/a>;<\/li>\n<li>a $250,000 grant from the Arthur Vining Davis Foundations benefiting <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kzoo.edu\/news\/environmental-education-grant\/\">environmental education<\/a> and K\u2019s Center for <a href=\"https:\/\/envirostewardship.kzoo.edu\/\">Environmental Stewardship<\/a>; and<\/li>\n<li>K receiving a $1 million, five-year grant from the Howard Hughes Medical Institute to find ways to better serve math and science students from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kzoo.edu\/news\/inclusive-science-math\/\">underrepresented demographic groups<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>NSF is an independent federal agency created by Congress in 1950 to promote the progress of science and advance national health, prosperity and welfare, making such research and developing future scientists a priority.
