Several Kalamazoo College students with local ties are helping prospective students and their families learn about the school, the campus and the city this summer through the Admission Center<\/a>. Madelyn Betts \u201919, Leah Todd \u201920 and Faruq Schieber \u201920\u2014all of Kalamazoo\u2014are among the campus tour guides, and they say summer is an excellent time to visit.<\/p>\n

\u201cSummer gives you an opportunity to see things when they\u2019re at their best,\u201d on campus and in the City of Kalamazoo, said Schieber, an international area studies<\/a> major. \u201cEverything is in bloom and it\u2019s quiet without the hustle and bustle on campus.\u201d<\/p>\n

As members of the Holistic Inclusive Visitor Experience (HIVE) team, these three also fulfill roles as communicators and hosts to prospective students and their families. Each is an excellent source of information on the K-Plan<\/em><\/a>, Kalamazoo College\u2019s distinctive approach to academics in the liberal arts and sciences, and what you can see and do when you visit<\/a>. Here are four of their tips for college visits.<\/p>\n

Have Questions for Your Tour Guides<\/h2>\n

Betts, who studies German<\/a> and business<\/a> with a concentration in film and media studies<\/a>, advises prospective students and families to develop a list of important questions to ask when they\u2019re on campus. She said she commonly answers questions ranging from whether first-year students can have cars on campus to inquiries about academic support and leadership opportunities.<\/p>\n

\u201cEveryone is here to help you get everything you want out of your visit,\u201d Betts said, adding it\u2019s also a good idea to ask about activities on campus.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere\u2019s so much going on each term you don\u2019t hear about ahead of time, you\u2019ll think, \u2018If I only had more time,\u2019 \u201d said Betts, who is the president of K\u2019s student Swing Dance Club and Film Club, and a member of Cirque du K, a student circus troupe.<\/p>\n

The practice of asking questions will also benefit students when they\u2019re attending K. Todd, for example, said when she needed advice about a class, several people responded to a single email, including volleyball Head Coach Jeanne Hess, even though Todd no longer plays volleyball<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\u201cA teacher, a dean, my study abroad adviser and my academic adviser all responded about this one class, even Coach (Hess),\u201d Todd said. \u201cShe\u2019s always reaching out, trying to make sure there\u2019s a connection. We have nice people here. I enjoy meeting people from all over the world.\u201d<\/p>\n

Reach Out<\/h2>\n

Schieber said it can be intimidating for high school students to plan campus visits, especially if they\u2019re uncertain about what college they want to attend. The solution for easing that intimidation is to connect with Admission<\/a> in advance.<\/p>\n

\u201cMake a phone call to us before you come and point out your interests to us,\u201d he said. \u201cYou can even request an interview with an admission counselor<\/a>. That call can help us as guides and counselors get more of an idea of what you would like access to so we can show you a good fit.\u201d<\/p>\n

As a prospective student a few years ago, Schieber said that fit involved study abroad<\/a> opportunities and the easy access to professors he wouldn\u2019t have gotten at a larger school.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis is an environment where professors care about your success\u2014you matter,\u201d said Schieber, who will study abroad in Ecuador this fall.<\/p>\n

Prepare for the Weather<\/h2>\n

Regardless of the season in which you visit, it\u2019s a good idea to prepare for the weather. Check the forecast for Kalamazoo in advance and dress appropriately for being outside, Todd said. Also, notify Admission if you\u2019re running late for your tour. Calling ahead ensures tour guides are at your service when you arrive.<\/p>\n

Picture it<\/h2>\n

Betts advises that students take pictures of the campuses they visit, especially when they visit schools far from home, to ensure they remember which is which.<\/p>\n

\u201cI heard a horror story once about a student who visited a campus and loved it,\u201d Betts said. \u201cShe applied to what she thought was that college, was accepted and registered for classes, only to find when she arrived on campus she had applied to the wrong college.\u201d<\/p>\n

Each is an excellent source of information on the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kzoo.edu\/k-plan\/\"><em>K-Plan<\/em><\/a>, Kalamazoo College\u2019s distinctive approach to academics in the liberal arts and sciences, and what you can see and do when you <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kzoo.edu\/admission\/visiting\/\">visit<\/a>. Here are four of their tips for college visits.<\/p>\n<h2>Have Questions for Your Tour Guides<\/h2>\n<p>Betts, who studies <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kzoo.edu\/programs\/german\/\">German<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kzoo.edu\/programs\/economics-business\/\">business<\/a> with a concentration in <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kzoo.edu\/programs\/film-media-studies\/\">film and media studies<\/a>, advises prospective students and families to develop a list of important questions to ask when they\u2019re on campus. Her duties include serving as one of several tour guides on campus this summer.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cThere\u2019s so much going on each term you don\u2019t hear about ahead of time, you\u2019ll think, \u2018If I only had more time,\u2019 \u201d said Betts, who is the president of K\u2019s student Swing Dance Club and Film Club, and a member of Cirque du K, a student circus troupe.<\/p>\n<p>The practice of asking questions will also benefit students when they\u2019re attending K. Todd, for example, said when she needed advice about a class, several people responded to a single email, including volleyball Head Coach Jeanne Hess, even though Todd no longer plays <a href=\"https:\/\/hornets.kzoo.edu\/sports\/wvball\/index\">volleyball<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA teacher, a dean, my study abroad adviser and my academic adviser all responded about this one class, even Coach (Hess),\u201d Todd said. \u201cShe\u2019s always reaching out, trying to make sure there\u2019s a connection. We have nice people here. I enjoy meeting people from all over the world.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2>Reach Out<\/h2>\n<p>Schieber said it can be intimidating for high school students to plan campus visits, especially if they\u2019re uncertain about what college they want to attend. The solution for easing that intimidation is to connect with <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kzoo.edu\/admission\/\">Admission<\/a> in advance.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMake a phone call to us before you come and point out your interests to us,\u201d he said. \u201cYou can even request an interview with an <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kzoo.edu\/admission\/meet-your-admission-counselor\/\">admission counselor<\/a>. That call can help us as guides and counselors get more of an idea of what you would like access to so we can show you a good fit.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_11142\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-11142\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-11142\" src=\"\/\/www.kzoo.edu\/news\/files\/2018\/07\/Faruq-Schieber-Tour-Guides-300x260.jpg\" alt=\"Faruq Schieber among Tour Guides\" width=\"300\" height=\"260\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-11142\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Faruq Schieber ’20 is among the Kalamazoo College tour guides who suggests visiting the College and the city over the summer.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>As a prospective student a few years ago, Schieber said that fit involved <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kzoo.edu\/k-plan\/study-abroad\/\">study abroad<\/a> opportunities and the easy access to professors he wouldn\u2019t have gotten at a larger school.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is an environment where professors care about your success\u2014you matter,\u201d said Schieber, who will study abroad in Ecuador this fall.<\/p>\n<h2>Prepare for the Weather<\/h2>\n<p>Regardless of the season in which you visit, it\u2019s a good idea to prepare for the weather. Check the forecast for Kalamazoo in advance and dress appropriately for being outside, Todd said. Also, notify Admission if you\u2019re running late for your tour. Calling ahead ensures tour guides are at your service when you arrive.<\/p>\n<h2>Picture it<\/h2>\n<p>Betts advises that students take pictures of the campuses they visit, especially when they visit schools far from home, to ensure they remember which is which.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI heard a horror story once about a student who visited a campus and loved it,\u201d Betts said. \u201cShe applied to what she thought was that college, was accepted and registered for classes, only to find when she arrived on campus she had applied to the wrong college.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Our <a href=\"http:\/\/kzoo.edu\/tour\">virtual tour<\/a>, equipped with pictures and video, offers a preview of our campus, although we recommend seeing it yourself.
