A new book written by Kalamazoo College Associate Professor of History Joseph Bangura promotes new perspectives on the formation and social history of Sierra Leone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Research regarding Sierra Leone typically focuses on the roles of the Creoles and\/or Krio, who were descendants of ex-slaves from Europe, North America, Jamaica and Africa living in the colony. Bangura, however, examines the roles of the indigenous Temne-speakers through the socio-economic formation, establishment and evolution of Freetown in \u201cThe Temne of Sierra Leone: African Agency in the Making of a British Colony.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Bangura\u2019s analysis includes market women, religious figures and community leaders, and the complex relationships they developed. He also considers key issues such as the politics of belonging, African agency and the creation of national identities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At K, Bangura is the chair of the History Department<\/a> and the director of African Studies<\/a>. He has taught such courses as:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u2022 The Politics of Sub-Saharan Africa;
\u2022 Introduction to African Studies
\u2022 Islam in Africa;
\u2022 Civilizations of Africa;
\u2022 Contemporary Africa;
\u2022 Gender Relations in Africa;
\u2022 Africa and the Atlantic Slave Trade;
\u2022 African Christianity;
\u2022 Globalization and International Politics;
\u2022 Globalization and Africa;
\u2022 War and Peace in Africa; and
\u2022 The Cold War in Africa.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Bangura earned his master\u2019s degree and Ph.D. from Dalhousie University, and his bachelor\u2019s degree in history from the University of Sierra Leone. He co-edited two other books with Marda Mustapha, \u201cDemocratization and Human Security in Sierra Leone,\u201d which was released in 2015; and \u201cSierra Leone beyond the Lome Peace Accord,\u201d which was released in 2010.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Bangura\u2019s professional memberships include the African Studies Association<\/a>, the Africa Network, the West African Research Association<\/a> and the National Social Sciences Association.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Professor of History Joseph Bangura promotes new perspectives on the formation and social history of Sierra Leone.<\/p>\n<p><!-- \/wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p><!-- wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p>Research regarding Sierra Leone typically focuses on the roles of the Creoles and\/or Krio, who were descendants of ex-slaves from Europe, North America, Jamaica and Africa living in the colony. Bangura, however, examines the roles of the indigenous Temne-speakers through the socio-economic formation, establishment and evolution of Freetown in \u201cThe Temne of Sierra Leone: African Agency in the Making of a British Colony.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><!-- \/wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p><!-- wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p>Bangura\u2019s analysis includes market women, religious figures and community leaders, and the complex relationships they developed. He also considers key issues such as the politics of belonging, African agency and the creation of national identities.<\/p>\n<p><!-- \/wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p><!-- wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p>At K, Bangura is the chair of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kzoo.edu\/programs\/history\/\">History Department<\/a> and the director of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kzoo.edu\/programs\/african-studies\/\">African Studies<\/a>. He has taught such courses as:<\/p>\n<p><!-- \/wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p><!-- wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p>\u2022 The Politics of Sub-Saharan Africa;<br \/>\u2022 Introduction to African Studies<br \/>\u2022 Islam in Africa;<br \/>\u2022 Civilizations of Africa;<br \/>\u2022 Contemporary Africa;<br \/>\u2022 Gender Relations in Africa;<br \/>\u2022 Africa and the Atlantic Slave Trade;<br \/>\u2022 African Christianity;<br \/>\u2022 Globalization and International Politics;<br \/>\u2022 Globalization and Africa;<br \/>\u2022 War and Peace in Africa; and<br \/>\u2022 The Cold War in Africa.<\/p>\n<p><!-- \/wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p><!-- wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p>Bangura earned his master\u2019s degree and Ph.D. from Dalhousie University, and his bachelor\u2019s degree in history from the University of Sierra Leone.
