The proposal must, however, be feasible in the context of the College’s existing curriculum and faculty expertise. The student must demonstrate a record of discipline and academic success in coursework, including independent work. Students submitting a proposal for an Independent Interdisciplinary Major must have a minimum GPA of 3.0 and may not declare a second major.

Advising and Proposal Process

Students interested in pursuing an Independent Interdisciplinary Major must first form an advisory committee composed of at least three faculty members. The committee must include representatives from each relevant department or program, as well as the student’s academic advisor. One member will serve as the committee chair. Faculty participation on these committees is voluntary and requires approval from the appropriate department or program chairs.

Once the advisory committee has been established, the student will develop a formal proposal in consultation with all committee members. In addition to individual meetings with the student, the committee must meet at least once without the student present to evaluate the proposal and formulate feedback. The final proposal must be approved by all members of the advisory committee as well as by the Educational Policies Committee. Completed proposals must be submitted no later than the end of the student’s sophomore year.

Proposal Requirements

After the proposal has been approved and filed with the Registrar’s Office, any subsequent changes or course substitutions must be approved by the committee chair in consultation with the other committee members.

An Independent Interdisciplinary Major Proposal includes the following:

Purpose: The proposal must clearly define the central topic or theme of the major, articulate the student’s interest in the area, and explain why existing majors, minors, or concentrations do not adequately address this interest.

Plan of Study: The plan of study must include a minimum of 10 courses drawn from at least two departments or programs. It should demonstrate how the selection, combination, sequencing, and level of coursework provide both breadth and depth in the interdisciplinary field. The advisory committee may also require supporting coursework, such as theoretically oriented classes, cognate courses, or courses that engage with the scholarly or professional literature relevant to the field.

SIP: Students must complete a Senior Integrated Project related to their interdisciplinary focus. The SIP advisor(s) must be a member of the student’s advisory committee. The proposal should indicate how the student intends to fulfill this requirement.

Senior Seminar: Students are expected to complete at least one senior seminar related to their project or within a relevant discipline. The proposal should describe how this requirement will be met.

Independent Interdisciplinary Concentration

The Independent Interdisciplinary Concentration (IIC) is designed for students who wish to pursue a clearly defined and cohesive area of study not represented by an existing major, minor, or concentration. Proposals must be feasible within the College’s current curriculum and faculty expertise. Students may complete only one IIC, though they may also pursue additional majors or minors.

Advising and Proposal Process

Students interested in an IIC must form an advisory committee of at least two faculty members. At least one member must be from the department or program that provides the majority of the coursework for the concentration. Faculty participation on IIC committees is voluntary.

In consultation with the advisory committee, the student develops a formal proposal. All committee members must approve the proposal before submission. Approved proposals must be submitted to the Registrar by the end of the Winter Quarter of the senior year. Any subsequent changes must be approved by the committee and filed with the Registrar.

Proposal Requirements

An Independent Interdisciplinary Concentration Proposal must include the following:

Purpose: Clearly define the concentration’s topic or theme, explain the student’s interest in it, and demonstrate why existing academic programs do not adequately address this area.

Program of Study: Include a minimum of six courses. The proposal should explain how the selection, sequence, level, and combination of courses create both breadth and coherence within the interdisciplinary topic. The advisory committee may also require courses that provide theoretical foundations, related (cognate) coursework, or engagement with scholarly or professional literature.

SIP: Students may complete a SIP related to the concentration and apply one SIP unit toward the six required courses. If included, the proposal must explain how the SIP fits within the overall program of study.

Senior Seminar: Students may count a relevant senior seminar toward one of the six required courses.

Independent Interdisciplinary Major The Independent Interdisciplinary major is intended for students who have a strong, well-articulated desire to pursue depth in an interdisciplinary area where the College does not have a defined major.
