{"id":24055,"date":"2016-11-05T11:55:36","date_gmt":"2016-11-05T15:55:36","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.kzoo.edu\/alumni\/?p=24055"},"modified":"2019-11-15T15:05:16","modified_gmt":"2019-11-15T19:05:16","slug":"political-genocide-lecture","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.kzoo.edu\/alumni\/political-genocide-lecture\/","title":{"rendered":"Political Genocide"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>John Dugas, Arcus Center for Social Justice Leadership Associate Professor of Political Science, describes the attempt in Colombia, beginning in the mid-1980s, to \u201cmurder\u201d an entire political group\u2014the leftist, legal, legitimate and electorally successful political party, Union Patri\u00f3tica (UP)\u2014by means of the systematic targeted killing of more than 3,000 of its members. In response, UP survivors have successfully advocated for the criminalization of \u201cpolitical genocide,\u201d thereby giving to the world a unique legal instrument to help prevent human rights abuses, to pursue justice and legal redress, and to hold perpetrators of the crime accountable.
