Internships

Due to a series of injuries and family situations, we find ourselves with two intern positions open this summer for the
KO FESTIVAL OF PERFORMANCE
a season on the theme of
"FOOD"
appetites, attitudes and politics
on the Amherst College campus in Amherst, MA

Interns must be at least 18 years old, and in previous seasons have ranged from 18 – 55.
Perhaps you know someone who might be interested!
Please help me get the word out to them.

Who Might Be Interested:
Naturally, those with a theater background, but also to those compelled by the season theme.  This might include those interested in community-sustained agriculture, community-based organizing, cultural studies, anthropology, the humanities and arts and a host of other disciplines. And of course, “foodies!”

General Description of the Internship
Interns work closely with the staff and the visiting artists to execute the full range of summer activities, including mounting and running of shows, assisting with rehearsal residencies where new work is being created, hosting the visiting artists and workshop students, and the creation of visual displays about the work. Interns are full members of the artistic community at the festival, and as such are encouraged to participate in the discussions that follow all the performances at the festival. Experience, particularly in the technical and front-of-house aspects of theatre production, is welcome – but all interns will receive additional training for their work, which will be in a multiplicity of production areas.

Useful Information
All activities will be held on the Amherst College campus in Amherst, MA July 5 - August 12. Internship dates may be somewhat flexible.  Interns are housed on campus with the artists in a wonderful mansion with a large and fully-equipped kitchen. Interns are eligible to use the state-of-the-art campus gym and pool. There is a bike path right near the housing and the center of Amherst is just a short walk away. Cars are useful, but not absolutely necessary as the housing, studio and performance spaces are all within walking distance.

ALSO PERHAPS OF INTEREST: our 6-Day intensive theatre workshops and the performances.

Playwriting

How Kalamazoo College Students Can Submit for Winter 09 Festival Playhouse production of the Student Playwriting Festival (SPF) OR the Theatre Kalamazoo! Staged Reading Series.

I. POLICY ON SUBMISSIONS

  • WHAT YOU HAVE TO SUBMIT: All submissions must consist of a one-page cover letter and the script in proper format. You need only submit one copy of the play. All submissions must be hard copy. No electronic submissions accepted. We are encouraging 10 minute plays and one-act plays. See Ed if you would like to submit a full-length play (remember, 10 minute plays are ten numbered pages of text)!
  • DUE: All submissions are due to Ed Menta, Theatre Arts Dept., Kalamazoo College, Kalamazoo, MI 49006, and must be received (not just postmarked) no later than Week 9 Wednesday 5pm day, May 28, 2008. No late submissions will be accepted.
  • WHO MAY SUBMIT AND HOW MANY PLAYS: Students may submit more than one play. We will consider plays by recent alums as well as current students. You MAY submit a play that has already been produced in the TK Staged Reading Series or ACTF New Playwrights Program, but NOT a play that has been produced or read in a previous SPF.
  • CONTENT OF COVER LETTER: The one page letter should address why you think your play should be included in the Festival Playhouse SPF or TK! Staged Reading Series, or both. In your cover letter, you must include the following sentences verbatim: “I understand that it is the responsibility of the playwright to be actively involved in the rehearsal process of a staged reading of a new script. If my script is selected, I agree to attend as many rehearsals as possible, as well actively communicating with the director, before and during the rehearsal process. I am committed to active revision of the script throughout the rehearsal process.” Your letter must also address your geographic location and availability between January and May 2009.

  • HOW WILL PLAYWRIGHTS AND DIRECTORS WORK TOGETHER? When renowned author and Associate Head of the NYU Dramatic Writing program Dr. Gary Garrison visited our SPF in 2007 and spoke with students, he suggested that the faculty more actively role model the dynamic of how a professional playwright and director work together on a new script, to clarify the confusion of “Who’s in charge?” Who gets to decide what?” “How do we talk to each other as playwright and director?” It is not enough to have email instructions and introductory meetings! To that end, WMU Professor of Playwriting Dr. Steve Feffer will write a new 10-minute play and Ed Menta will direct it. In addition to a preliminary meeting in Exam Week of the Fall 08 term, all student playwrights and directors will be required to attend and observe at least two specific rehearsals of this project, which will be built into the regular rehearsal schedule in January.
  • WHEN WILL THE PLAYS BE CHOSEN? The Theatre Arts faculty will read the plays. Plays chosen will be announced by Week One of Fall term. TK! Staged Reading Series submissions will be recommended to individual theatres, who will then make the final choice.

  • HOW WILL THIS WORK? Once the plays have been announced, we will solicit student directors to apply. All plays, whether readings or fully staged, will have auditions in either Week one or Week Two in Winter term (depending upon what happens with ACTF). There is ONE company for the Student Playwriting Festival. Some students might be playwrights, some might be directors, some might be actors, and some could be all three. Ed Menta will act as Artistic Director & Producer for the project, while Jon Reeves will serve as Technical Director, supervising such logistics as auditions, rehearsal schedules lighting, and other technical needs. TK! Staged Reading Series Dates ate TBD.
