Summer, 2005

Greetings, Friends!

Our 41st Season of Festival Playhouse was a celebration of The Playwright: Modern, Emerging, and Classical. In the Fall, we began with THE THREEPENNY OPERA by Bertolt Brecht and Kurt Weill  (Modern), directed by myself with Vocal and Musical Direction by music professors James Turner and Tom Evans. In addition to our first major collaboration with the Music Department in several years, we achieved another first – an “All Fine Arts” production, as we also collaborated with Art (Professor Tom Rice designed the video sequences), as well as the German Department (Professor Jennifer Redmann worked with the cast on German history and also arranged for the visit of Brecht scholar Professor Marc Silberman to give a lecture and participate in a post-play panel). In Winter, for the first time ever, we produced A STUDENT PLAYWRIGHTING FESTIVAL (Emerging) on our main stage. There were two evenings of 6 BY 10 (fully staged 10-minute plays), STAGED READINGS OF ONE-ACT PLAYS, and a staged reading of the full -length play, ALISON SHIELDS by Joe Tracz (a 2004 graduate of Kalamazoo College and recently recognized playwrighting regional winner in the 2005 American College Theatre Festival). There were also playwrighting workshops, and feedback sessions with audiences, local, and professional playwrights. All told, we produced six different performances of 13 plays written by seven different student playwrights in four days! All plays were free. We closed in Spring with THE ROVER by Aphra Behn - (Classical), directed by Kalamazoo College theatre arts professor Karen Berthel. Behn was the first major female playwright writing in the English language, and, as has become her custom, Karen and her cast certainly did wonders with speaking that language. In addition to the decorative Carnival setting by Professor Lanny Potts, the show also featured some of the most detailed and splendid period costumes in our recent history by guest artist costumer K.C. Kozminski. THE ROVER deservedly received a sparkling review from the Kalamazoo Gazette. In addition to the mainstage shows, our “best and brightest” were featured in our Senior Performance Series, which was topped by Taras Berezwosky’s strong production of Strindberg’s MISS JULIE in the Dungeon Theatre. This year was also a TERRIFIC year for student designers: seniors Rachael Weisman (Costumes – THREEPENNY) and Robert Brown (Lights –SPF and ROVER) really thrived in their assignments as did Mike Sabourin (junior – Mask Design for ROVER), and sophomores Sarah Fuhrman (Scenery - SPF), Tim Krause (Sound – ROVER), and Michael White (Sound – THREEPENNY and SPF). Sophomore Andrea Visco also received an ACTF citation for stage-managing THREEPENNY. And for the first time since Felicity Hesed in 1996, sophomore Tyler Greene broke into the semi-final round of the ACTF Irene Ryan acting competition!

We also had some tremendous guest artists this year! In September, in conjunction with the University Theater of Western Michigan University, our students saw a lecture and performance from renowned hip-hop theatre artists, Will Power and Daniel Banks, and also participated in a workshop. In Winter, as part of the STUDENT PLAYWRIGHTING FESTIVAL, we engaged African American playwright and Broadway actress, Ms. Oni Faida Lampley to serve as the main respondent to student writing). Ms. Lampley also gave a workshop in the Playwrighting course, visited Senior Seminar, and had lunch with theatre arts majors. In Spring, Dr. Von H. Washington of the WMU Multicultural Theatre program returned to teach Introduction to African American Theatre A very special treat in Spring was when K theatre alums Jordan Klepper (K01) and Mark Piebenga (K’02) visited from Chicago with their professional Improv and Sketch comedy team, American Dream. They performed in the Dungeon Theatre with the student Improv group Monkapult.

Finally, in Spring term, as part of our continuing service learning initiative with Kalamazoo’s teen center, The Ark, senior Taras Berezowsky taught an after school Shakespeare class at Millwood School in Kalamazoo

NEXT YEAR'S SEASON: “The World is Our Stage: A Season of International Theatre” exemplifies the college’s commitment to the experiential, international, and multicultural dimensions of Kalamazoo College. With the exception of THE IMAGINARY INVALID, none of these plays has ever before been produced in Kalamazoo. The mainstage plays are from contemporary India, contemporary South Africa, and Neoclassical France. In addition, we are presenting two world premieres, both award winning scripts, written by recent Kalamazoo College alumni. And as always, we continue to feature the work of our "best and the brightest" in our SENIOR PERFORMANCE SERIES, young artists who support the great tradition at Kalamazoo College of students creating their own theatre.

1. CATCH-86 a one man show about Chernobyl and the Ukraine, written and performed in both English and Ukrainian by Taras Berezowsky (2005 graduate of Kalamazoo College). A project that started out as a 2004 Senior Honors Project, which was then expanded to include recent political events in Ukraine, Taras returns to us as part of the Festival Playhouse Guest Artist Series. Through funding from the Dorothy U. Dalton Enrichment Fund, the Festival Playhouse Guest Artist Series is committed to providing culturally diverse art absolutely free to the Greater Kalamazoo Community. Co-sponsored by the First-Year Experience of Kalamazoo College. Friday, Sep. 23, 2005.

  2. NAGA-MANDALA (Play with a Cobra) by Girish Karnad. Directed by guest artist professional film and stage director from Calcutta, Suman Mukherjee. The play combines two traditional Indian oral tales, but also touches on issues of women’s lives in the context of contemporary Indian culture, as well as the continuing significance of storytelling in the society. Co-sponsored by the Center for International Programs of Kalamazoo College. Nov. 10-13, 2005.

  3. PHENOMENON OF DECLINE, a one-act play, by Joe Tracz (2004 graduate of Kalamazoo College). Tracz's play has already won first place in the 2005 American College Theatre Festival Region III New Playwrights Program One-Act Play competition. PHENOMENON is about a writer attempting to deal with the disappearance of his twin brother in a swamp during their childhood. We have been invited to produce the play at ACTF at Illinois State University in January 2006. Friday & Saturday, Jan. 6 -7, 2006

  4. SORROWS AND REJOICINGS by award winning South African playwright Athol Fugard. One of his very latest plays (2001), it takes place after the funeral of a white South African writer who has had a daughter by his black South African lover while being married to a white South African woman. Although the present time is the current post-apartheid South African society, through flashbacks, the burden of the past and current racism forces all four characters to confront each other painfully with honesty and love. Co-sponsored by the African Studies Program of Kalamazoo College. Feb. 9-12, 2006.

  5. “The Imaginary Invalid" (Le Malade imaginaire) by Moliére. This classic comedy of the French Renaissance has been delighting audiences for over three hundred years. As always, Moliére writes with both great wit and insight into the human condition in this story of Argan, the hypochondriac who battles both his doctors and his family in trying to keep control of his household, May 18-21, 2006.

PLUS WE ARE DOING EIGHT (the most ever) student directed or senior performance projects:

WINTER & SPRING 2006: THE SENIOR PERFORMANCE SERIES

“Scenes from Caryl Churchill” directed by Lisa Ludwinski
“Homebody” by Tony Kushner, performed by Lauren Sprenger
“The Flying Doctor” by Moliére, directed by Vann Lee
“The Love of Don Perlimpin” by Federico Garcia Lorca, directed by Zoë Marshall-Rashid
“Keep Tightly Closed in a Cool, Dry Place” by Megan Terry, directed by Trent Pancy
“Mud” by Maria Irene Fornes, directed by Jess Stuenkel
“The Medea Project” by Euripides, 2 different versions, directed by Liz Goodson & Lauren Russo

As always, Festival Playhouse of Kalamazoo College gratefully acknowledges the support of the Dorothy U. Dalton Foundation.

THE BIGGEST NEWS WE HAVE IS my close friend and wonderful Director of Technical Theatre & Design Professor Lanny Potts has been asked to become the Associate Provost of the College for the next three years (Lanny is so good at everything he does that this may have been inevitable). Normally, I would be worried sick about replacing someone of Lanny’s caliber. But in this case I’m thrilled to announce that our new Director of Technical Theatre is Jon Reeves, who has extensive professional experience in scenery, lighting, sound, and just about everything else one could imagine (including stage combat and weapons building). Lanny will still be around to teach Lighting, give advice and help students on individual projects, but our productions and courses are in the extremely capable hands of Jon Reeves!
