Kalamazoo College
Student Commission

Positions & Committees

President
Serving as the principal representative, the Commission President presides over Commission Assembly meetings. He/She votes only in the event of a tie, and ensures all Assembly decisions are implemented. The President functions as a member of Student Commission and all subsidiary bodies thereof. At the beginning of each quarter, the President gives a state of the campus address to benefit the entire Kalamazoo College community. The President is elected during the 4th week of spring quarter. The term is one year and actively begins fall quarter.

Finance Director
The Finance Director serves as the chairperson of the Student Commission Financial Policies Committee (FPC) and the Student Organization Sub-Committee. He/She is a member of the Executive Committee, and serves as the authority on financial implications regarding student organizations. To be eligible to run for Finance Director candidates are required to have two quarters experience on the Financial Policies Committee. The Finance Director is elected in the 4th week of spring quarter, to begin active directorship in the fall. Like the President, the term is one year and actively begins fall quarter.

Deputy Finance Director
The Deputy Finance Director will serve as the assistant to the Finance Director. Ideally this position is reserved for an underclassman for the purpose of familiarizing students with the office of Finance Director. All students are welcomed to apply. This position's responsibilities include assisting with oversight of the Student Organization Budget, Student Commission Budget, and the Gift Fund. The term is one quarter.

Vice President
The Vice President will serve as a member of the Executive Committee, the Leadership Toolbox Committee, and will head the Student Trustee Link project. In case of the removal of the President from office, or of his/her death, resignation, or inability to discharge the powers and duties of the said office, the Vice President will take the position of President until the disability be removed, or a President shall be elected. The term is one year and actively begins fall quarter..

Secretary
The Secretary of the Student Commission maintains the official record of all actions taken by the Commission Assembly, as well as all other written records of this body. This includes the taking of minutes at meetings of the Commission Assembly and the Executive Committee. The Secretary makes these minutes available to all interested parties. He/She is a member of the Executive Committee. He/She works with the Public Relations Commissioner on maintaining the Student Commission web page. The term is one quarter.

Public Relations Commissioner
The Public Relations Commissioner will help the Student Commission reach out to students and the greater college community by providing press releases, publicity, and coordinating all external information. He/She will serve as a member of the Executive Committee. He/She work with the Secretary on maintaining to Student Commission web page. The term is one quarter.


Elected Committee Positions of Student Commission of Kalamazoo College
These are committees or positions that students must be elected into.

Educational Policies Committee (EPC)
These students serve as student body representatives to the standing faculty committee which deals with academic affairs of the college. This includes: new courses, new departments, concentrations, or minors, and any other issues pertaining to the granting of academic credit. These representatives are voting members of that committee and are expected to keep Commission informed of its work and to gather student input on the issues it considers. Representatives serve as members of the Portfolio Committee. The EPC is to meet once per week. Representatives are elected every quarter, except for one year-long position that is elected in the fall of the year.

International Policies Committee (IPC)
These students are representatives to the standing committee on international programs, and will provide input and assist in the decisions surrounding study abroad and other international programs. They are voting members of that committee and are expected to keep the Commission informed of their work. They also gather student input regarding study abroad requirements, policies, and programs.
Representatives are elected every quarter, except for one year-long position that is elected in the fall of the year.

Campus Commissioners
Commissioners for the Campus will be assigned to a residence hall and responsible for gathering information and feedback of the selected Hall by going door-to-door and speaking with residents. They will then present this information to the Student Commission Assembly. He/She shall answer and report student concerns including, but not limited to, buildings and grounds, personal issues, demands for new services or facilities, etc. All campus commissioners are expected to serve on sub-committees of the Commission Assembly. The Chair will serve on the Executive Committee. Representatives are elected every quarter, except for one year-long position that is elected in the fall of the year.

Campus Community Commissioners
Individuals elected to this position will have the opportunity to implement new ideas that are community related. Last quarter these commissioners organized a Campus Forum to facilitate discussion of community members as well as begin workings on a new Off-Campus Activities calendar. The term is one quarter.

Information Services Committee

This committee meets with faculty and administration to discuss, review, and better the information services of Kalamazoo College.  Information services handles all the policies of computer resources, internet, and telephone access on campus. Representatives are elected every quarter, except for one year-long position that is elected in the fall of the year.

Athletic Committee
Consists of three quarterly positions of at least one male and one female. They serve as representatives to the standing faculty committee which deals with Kalamazoo College athletics. They are voting members of that committee and are expected to keep the Commission Assembly informed of their work. They also gather student input on issues regarding student athletes and college athletic events. Members of the athletic committee
will also be responsible for the organization of the Triathlon in the Spring and attendance of the MIAA conference. Representatives are elected every quarter, except for one year-long position that is elected in the fall of the year.

Experiential Education Committee

The Experiential Education Committee meets with members of the faculty and administration to establish, revise, and evaluate all aspects of Kalamazoo College's experiential education programs. (including, but not exclusively, internships, externships, career development, and study abroad).

Food and Dining Service Committee
The Food and Dining Service Commissioners will serve as liaisons between the Kalamazoo College Food Service and the Student Body by meeting periodically and raising student concerns. Representatives are elected every quarter, except for one year-long position that is elected in the fall of the year.


Assigned Committee Positions of Student Commission of Kalamazoo College
These committees are formed from the Commissioners that have already been elected. The positions are not decided by election. They are formed as needed, by the President of Student Commission. Other committees not listed here may be formed, as the President of Student Commission sees fit.

Executive Committee
This committee consists of the President, the Vice President, the Financial Director, the Public Relations coordinator, and four representatives that are determined by the President. This body sets the agenda for Commission Assembly meetings, maintains Commission's internal budget, and oversees Commission's internal resources (e.g. funding, communication). The executive committee will also be responsible for organizing and designing workshops to enhance leadership and teamwork skills for Student Commission representatives.

Public Relations Committee
This committee aids the Public Relations Coordinator in reaching out to students and the greater college community.

Financial Policies Committee (FPC)
This committee aids and advises the Finance Director with the appropriation of the student organization budget and financial guidelines.

Student Organization Sub-Committee
This committee reviews proposed student organizations. The committee members also serve as Resource Room liaisons and are responsible for the maintenance of the Student Organization Resource Room.

Student Trustee Link Committee
This Committee organizes the Student Trustee Link activities, which are held Spring Quarter. The Vice President will chair the Student Trustee Link Committee.

Triathlon Committee
This Committee organizes the Triathlon, which occurs Spring Quarter.
