President
Patrick Tanis -
I have been a member of the Student Commission every quarter I have been on campus at Kalamazoo College. During my time on the Commission I have served as a Campus Commissioner, Chairperson of the Educational Policies Committee, a member of the Food and Dining Services Committee, a member of the Financial Policies Committee, and a member of the Executive Board. Currently, I am working as a Campus Community Commissioner to help organize a campus forum for Spring Quarter. From my experience on the Student Commission I have gained a keen understanding of the position of the Presidency. I would not be running for this position if I did not feel that I was the person best prepared for the job.
I would like to be elected Student Commission President because I want to continue to be a strong voice for my fellow students. As President, I will lead a Student Commission that is efficient, effective, and transparent when dealing with the concerns of students. I want to be President so that I can help in the creation of a Student Commission budget that is fiscally consistent and works to enhance student life on campus. Above all, I will serve as a pragmatic facilitator of a balanced and healthy dialogue on how we, as students, can best improve our “K” experience. Thank you for your consideration and I look forward to working with you to enhance our college community!
Finance Director
Joel Greenblatt -
I believe that I am a highly qualified candidate for the position of Finance Director. There are so many things I have done during my three years at Kalamazoo College that have prepared me to fill this position. In my sophomore year, I served as the Treasurer for the College Democrats. While serving in this position, I helped plan a variety of exciting events, from our Fall Democratic Convention to our many guest speakers to giving out cotton candy at Spring Fling. I have also served four quarters on Student Commission. During these quarters I chaired the Campus Life Committee and spent three quarters on the Financial Policy Committee. Currently, I am the Public Relations Director working hard to increase the transparency of Student Commission and helping to publicize fun and exciting events on campus hosted by all student organizations.
I know that if elected to this position, I would use all my effort to create a stronger and more exciting campus environment. We have to acknowledge that next year will be hard financially, due to the size of the budget given to student organizations in general and the increasing number of these groups. As a campus, we want the most groups possible in order to host more diverse events and incorporate an increasing number of students into each event. Our campus deserves a Finance Director who has worked hard on the financial aspects of student organizations. As both a former treasurer and a member of the Financial Policy Committee, I know how to increase the power of a restricted budget to get the most out of each dollar allocated in order to benefit the student body of Kalamazoo College.
If elected, I promise to work as hard as possible to make the 2008-2009 school year both exciting and beneficial, especially for all those who work so hard to bring fun and creative events to our campus.
Alex Morgan -
With the number of student organizations growing, Student Commission¹s
budgeting during the 2008-2009 term will be critical to campus life.
During Fall and Winter Quarter I served as the first Deputy Finance Director
and a standing member of the Financial Policies Committee. During that time
I worked closely with Finance Director Lauren Migliore to oversee the
budgeting process and financial regulations.
I am running for Finance Director to promote youth, experience, and
consistency. With a relatively new Student Activities Director, Student
Commission is sure to mold during the coming years. We need a Finance
Director that is familiar with the people and process surrounding Student
Commission¹s financial policies. We need a Finance Director that will still
be around the next two years to perfect the system.
Vote for Youth. Vote for Experience. Vote for Alex Morgan.
Aidis Tuxhari -
I am a junior, Economics/ Business and French double-major. I have been a member of Student Commission for three quarters as a Student Commissioner and I have also served twice on the Financial Policies Committee. The great experience that I have had while being on Student Commission has contributed to my decision of applying for this position on my last year at Kalamazoo College. I am a very dedicated and driven student with many leadership abilities. I am dedicated to improving communication, in regard to financial matters, between Student Commission and student organizations in order to promote efficiency. I have shown leadership abilities on campus by being a Resident Assistant my sophomore year and by “co-restarting” the Business and Economics Club, this spring quarter. I am also serving as a TA for the International Business course. I have had many experiences with maintaining and drafting budgets, one of which was just this past summer at my internship. One of my duties was to put together a successful GALA for which I was given a budget constraint and it was up to me to allocate the money wisely. I plan to use that knowledge, as well as the knowledge that I have gotten from other similar experiences, to carry my duties and to resolve any future financial issues. As Stephen Covey, a Harvard Business School graduate, author, professional speaker, and management-expert, said "Effective leadership is putting first things first. Effective management is discipline, carrying it out.” If elected, I, Aidis Tuxhari, am sure to offer both leadership and discipline to fulfill all my duties as the Student Commission Finance Director for the 2008-2009 academic year.
Owen Willis -
The post of Finance Director is critical, not only in the operations of Student Commission, but in maintaining the quality of student life on campus. It requires a student with the dedication, knowledge and integrity to allocate the finances of Student Commission in the most efficient and appropriate way possible in order to maintain social life on campus. By declaring my candidacy for the position of Finance Director of Student Commission during the 2008-2009 school year, I feel that I am the student best prepared for the challenges it offers. During the six quarters I have served on Student Commission as a Campus Commissioner, I have learned a great deal about both the day-to-day operations of this institution, its diverse student body. I have also served four quarters on the Financial Advisory Committee, learning the nuances of the post and the importance of fiscal responsibility.
As Finance Director, I hope to reshape and streamline the budget process in order to help student organizations better understand and utilize the process, while at the same time provide the same high standards of integrity and fiscal responsibility maintained by those who have headed the committee in the past. With your support we can improve student life on campus and provide the best college experience, not only for ourselves, but also for future students of Kalamazoo College.
