Goal #1:
To
inform and educate the campus community about the importance
and value of diversity in the educational environment.
Systemically
addressing diversity or multiculturalism is a complex issue.
Systems are comprised of individuals. One cannot assume
that every one is on the same plane, in relation to their acceptance
of the need to address issues of diversity. The concept,
related definition, and consequences of accepting and/or embracing
diversity will vary, based on individual experience and the
differing stages of racial/cultural identity development.
Therefore, it is necessary to educate the community by 1) providing
a common definition and frame of reference, and 2) showing explicitly
how attending to matters of diversity is critical to institutional
(and therefore, individual) survival.
