Goals
of the Student Development Division
The Office of Student Development is expected to make distinct contributions to
the efforts to achieve the stated mission and implied goals of Kalamazoo College.
- “...prepare
its graduates to better understand, live successfully within, and provide
enlightened leadership to a richly diverse and increasingly complex world”
- “...to
develop increasing independence”
- “...discriminate
among moral and ethical values”
- “...develop
a humane knowledge of self”
- “...development
of self-reliant, mature individuals who are equipped to discharge their responsibilities
as citizens”
Within
this framework it has the particular obligation to direct its attention and energies
toward the development of the student members of the community, particularly in
the five dimensions of experiential education: lifelong learning, leadership development,
intercultural communication, career readiness, and social responsibility.
By adopting the following goals, the Office of Student Development aids the College
in its efforts to achieve its broadly stated educational mission. These
goals direct the policies, practices and personnel of the division toward common
and interdependent purposes, even though they may be seen as diverse activities
carried out by different offices. The Office of Student Development includes the
offices of Dean of Students, Health Services, Campus Life, Counseling, Residential
Life, Student Activities and Security.
- To provide
students with information, advice and counsel to assist them in making
the most of learning experiences available in and out of the classroom,
on and off campus, locally, nationally and internationally.
- To encourage
and assist students in developing the interpersonal, social and leadership
skills necessary for them to acquire both a sense of self- reliance and interdependence
as active members of the campus and broader communities.
- To support
and create opportunities for students to understand, accept and enhance
the social, spiritual, physical and cultural dimensions of themselves.
- To support
and create opportunities for students to understand and appreciate ideas,
cultures, ethnic backgrounds, and religions different from their own.
- To encourage
and assist students in developing organizations and activities which
meet their needs and interests at the same time offering their own developmental
opportunities.
- To encourage
students to abide by the goals of the Honor System to achieve a community
environment that is supportive of the academic, educational and democratic
ideals of the College and to ensure an orderly, fair, prompt and judicious
response to allegations of illegal or inappropriate individual or group
behavior which involves or affects students or which inhibits the College
community from achieving such an environment
- To work
with all appropriate College personnel and offices to assure that the
residential and other facilities designated for student use are available,
utilized and accepted as important and desirable elements of the total
educational experiences to be found at the school; particularly as these
activities may relate to our efforts to design, manage or utilize facilities
which are clean, safe and attractive.
