Student Life : Student
Activities
Extracurricular activities are central to the
development of Kalamazoo College students.
Quality entertainment and social opportunities
enrich student life at Kalamazoo College. A variety of activities, open to all "K" students throughout the year, help students balance academics with social activity and bring a social commonality to the student
body.
“Active involvement on campus, in and out of the classroom, can provide a connection to our community, a sense of balance, and greater meaning and fulfillment in our daily lives. I believe it is through relationships and in the opportunities we take advantage of, that we truly develop our identity and purpose in life.”
- Kate Lake,
Assistant Dean
of Students
It's all student- organized!
The
Kalamazoo College Student Activities Committee (SAC)
is a group of student volunteers who are responsible
for planning, organizing, and implementing major campus
events for the student body. Faculty and staff members
are often invited to participate in these programs.
SAC
members meet weekly with the Student Activities Coordinator
to plan these events. Membership is open to all students.
SAC promotes fun, growth,
leadership, organizational skills, and team planning.
AIR BAND/TALENT SHOW
Groups of students and individuals
show off their exciting talents. Many groups lip sync
to their favorite songs . . . others sing, dance, or
play a musical instrument . . . some even yo-yo!! It's
always entertaining and any students are welcome to
participate. The contest is judged and prizes are awarded
accordingly!
HOMECOMING WEEK ACTIVITIES FOR CURRENT "K" STUDENTS
In
past years, homecoming week has involved a week of school
spirit and fall time activities. These may include:
class contests, powder puff, raising money for charity,
pumpkin painting dress up days, school spirit gets discounts
at the bookstore, tailgating, pep rallies and of course
. . . the football game!!
The Homecoming
dance
is a great way to end Homecoming week. Traditionally semi-formal, in the past it has
taken place at off campus locations such as the Radisson
but more recently has become an Old Welles event. There's
always fun music, good snacks, and great times!
EXAM WEEK EXTRAVAGANZA
Exam
week extravaganza, usually sometime the weekend before
exams, provides a stress free environment for a few
hours. Every quarter is different. Sometimes profs and administrators
serve ice cream and pizza or other yummy treats while
music is playing. It's a time to socialize and relax.
Student groups such as Monkapult or student bands may
provide entertainment. Comedians, musicians, and trivia
game shows have also been seen at the extravaganza. It's a great
break students won't want to miss!
MONTE CARLO NIGHT
Music, games, dancing, food, and prizes.
Black Jack, Roulette, and other casino
games. Students have fun with the profs and administrators as
they work the casino and students play the games, then spend
their winning Monte Carlo bucks at the Millionaire Shop, a variety of donations from the K-College
community and around town.
SPECIAL EVENTS AND COMEDY CLUBS
The
special events are usually first or second weekend.
Special Events from the past have included Comedy Club.
At Comedy Club, a comedian or comedy group provides
entertainment in the environment of a comedy club staffed
by SAC. It is complete with mock cocktails and delicious
desserts . . . served to you by the SAC waiters and
waitresses (all free of course). A popular event sure
to provide a good laugh!Other entertainers: Gentlemen
Jugglers, many different music groups, ventriloquists,
Coffee House Nights, and hypnotists
SPRING FLING
The
day is usually spent on the Quad filled with fun events
to enjoy the spring. In the past these events have included inflatable
bungee run, moonwalk, laser tag, giant slide, tattoos, dunk tank, silly contests, tye-dying, a
picnic on the Quad and snacks
