Women's Programming

The Women's Programming division of the Office of Student Development serves as a primary resource and advocate for Kalamazoo College students, focusing on issues that are of special interest to women, but affect men, also. This office will:
  • Provide assistance to groups that develop programs that meet the developmental needs of women students on campus and programs that acknowledge men as playing an integral role in understanding these social issues.
  • Provide personal assistance, advocacy, and referrals to students who are victims of dating and relationship violence, stalking, sexual assault, sexual harassment, and gender discrimination.
  • Provide educational materials and personal assistance to students who are confronted with issues of dating and relationship violence, stalking, sexual assault, sexual harassment, and gender discrimination.
  • Conduct continuous assessment of the developmental needs of women on campus.
  • Provide programming that responds to these developmental needs

It is the goal of this office to educate students to:

  • take responsibility for their personal behavior.
  • respect the rights and wants of others.
  • face the consequences of their decision.
  • communicate clearly and honestly with their peers.
  • support their peers who are making good decisions concerning these social issues.
  • challenge those who communicate negatively about women and act violently towards women.
  • challenge many of the negative beliefs about women that our culture holds.

These goals are also either implicitly or explicitly stated as community expectations in the College's Honor System.

It is the belief of this office that all students, female and male, need to be aware of and knowledgeable about the issues that many students face. Congruent with the stated mission of Kalamazoo College, it is our goal that the college experience will prepare students for productive lives and participation in society by enhancing their understanding and encouraging students to strive to eliminate dating and relationship violence, stalking, sexual assault, sexual harassment, and gender discrimination.
