Kelsey Hassevoort earns Academic All-District honors
Kelsey Hassevoort was selected to the 2012 Capital One Academic All-District Women's At-Large Team on Thursday, May 17. Selected by members of the College Sports Information Directors of America, Academic All-District honorees advance to the national ballot for Capital One Academic All-America consideration.
A senior women's tennis player from Kalamazoo (Loy Norrix), Hassevoort was selected to the Academic All-District Team for the second consecutive year. Hassevoort was named MIAA Most Valuable Player this season while also earning All-MIAA honors for the second time. A biology major with a 4.0 GPA, Hassevoort was also honored with the Karen Caine Award as the league's top student-athlete in women's tennis. She posted a 7-1 conference record at No. 1 singles (9-11 overall) and a 6-2 conference record at No. 1 doubles (8-12 overall) while helping lead the Hornets to a third place finish and a trip to the MIAA Tournament semifinals.

Kalamazoo College’s Kelsey Hassevoort
and Paula Silverman were recognized with All-MIAA honors in
women’s tennis on Friday, May 4.
Hassevoort, a senior from Kalamazoo (Loy Norrix), was selected
as the league’s most valuable player while earning All-MIAA
First Team honors for the second consecutive year. Hassevoort
also earned the Karen Caine Scholar-Athlete Award, an annual
award instituted in 2007 to honor the former long-term women’s
tennis coach at Adrian College.
Hassevoort had a 7-1 record at No. 1 singles in league play
this season while finishing with a career record of 22-9 in
league play. She was named MIAA Player of the Week during
the second week of this season. Hassevoort also had a 6-2
league record at No. 1 doubles with Paula Silverman while
finishing with a career record of 19-8 in doubles.
"Kelsey is one of the best tennis players to ever play
for Kalamazoo,” said Head Coach Mark Murphy. “Her
dedication and commitment to her tennis, her education and
Kalamazoo College is never in doubt. These awards are well
deserved and indicative of the goals our players strive for."
Silverman, a senior from Ann Arbor (Huron), was selected
to the All-MIAA Second Team. Silverman posted a league record
of 7-1 at No. 2 singles and finished with a career record
of 17-8 in league play. She was 6-2 at No. 1 doubles with
Hassevoort and finished with a career record of 15-10 in doubles.
"Paula is one of the best captains I have ever had,”
Murphy said. “She is a great leader and one of the hardest
working student-athletes I have coached. She played No. 6
singles and No. 3 doubles last yea and worked very hard to
lead this team by moving up to No. 2 singles and No. 1 doubles.
This is a fantastic and well deserved honor."
"I am very proud of Kelsey and Paula on and off the
court. They are excellent examples of what great young people
can achieve at Kalamazoo College. I can't wait to see what
they accomplish next!"
Women's Tennis falls 5-4
in MIAA Tournament Semifinals
The women's tennis team lost 5-4 to Albion
in the semifinals of the MIAA Tournament on Thursday, May
3.
Kalamazoo led 2-1 after doubles, but Albion came back to
win four of the six singles matches, including two three-setters,
to win the match. Kelsey Hassevoort and Paula Silverman won
8-4 at No. 1 doubles while Olivia Bouchard and Kelsey Moran
won 9-8(4) at No. 2 doubles. Bouchard also won 6-2, 6-3 at
No. 5 singles while Carrie Foura won 5-7, 6-0, 6-2 at No.
6 singles. Results
Women's Tennis wins 6-3
at Saint Mary's
Hornets make MIAA Tournament as No. 3 seed
The women's tennis team wrapped up the regular
season with a 6-3 win at Saint Mary's on Tuesday, April 24.
With the win, Kalamazoo finished in third place in the MIAA
with a 6-2 record. The top four teams compete in the MIAA
Tournament, meaning Kalamazoo will play on the road at the
No. 2 seed on May 3rd.
Kalamazoo overcame a 3-0 deficit after dropping all three
doubles matches to Saint Mary's. The Hornets came back to
win all six singles matches, including three-set wins at No.
3 (Kelsey Moran) and No. 4 (Jenna Riehl). Kelsey Hassevoort
won 6-3, 6-1 at No. 1 singles while Paula Silverman won 6-1,
6-2 at No. 2. Results

Olivet 9-0
The women's tennis team defeated Olivet 9-0
at home on Saturday, April 21. Kalamazoo improved to 5-2 in
the MIAA with the win. Kalamazoo swept the three doubles points
before winning five of the six singles flights in straight
sets. Kelsey Hassevoort and Paula Silverman won 8-2 at No.
1 doubles. Hassevoort won 4-6, 6-2, 10-3 at No. 1 singles
while Silverman won 6-1, 6-1 at No. 2 singles. Kalamazoo travels
to Saint Mary's for the final match of the regular season
on Tuesday, April 24 at 4 p.m. Results
Women's Tennis loses home
match to Coe
The women's tennis team lost 9-0 to Coe in
Markin on Friday, April 20. Coe is ranked ninth in the region
while Kalamazoo is ranked No. 24. Coe won all three doubles
points, including a close 8-6 win over Kelsey Hassevoort and
Paula Silverman at No. 1 doubles. Coe won each singles match
in straight sets, including a 6-3, 7-6(5) win over Hassevoort
at No. 1 singles. Kalamazoo returns to action on Saturday
with a home match against Olivet at 1 p.m. Results

The women's tennis team improved to 4-2 in
the MIAA with a 9-0 win over Adrian on Wednesday, April 18.
Kalamazoo swept the three doubles points before winning five
of the six singles matches in straight sets. Kelsey Hassevoort
and Paula Silverman won 8-5 at No. 1 doubles. Hassevoort won
6-3, 6-2 at No. 1 singles while Silverman won 6-3, 6-0 at
No. 2 singles. Kalamazoo is scheduled to host Coe at 4 p.m.

Women's Tennis falls 5-4
to league-leadingAlbion
The women's tennis team was edged 5-4 by league-leading
Albion on Sunday, April 15. Kalamazoo led 2-1 after wins at
one and two doubles, but Albion came back to win the match
with wins at one-thru-four singles. Kelsey Hassevoort and
Paula Silverman won 8-5 at one doubles while Olivia Bouchard
and Kelsey Moran won 8-6 at two doubles. Bouchard won 6-1,
6-1 at five singles while Carrie Foura won 2-6, 7-6(0), 10-1
at six singles. The Hornets host Adrian on Wednesday, April
18 at 4 p.m. Results

at Alma
The women's tennis team improved to 3-1 in
the MIAA with a 7-2 win at Alma on Saturday, April 14. Kalamazoo
won at one and two doubles before winning the top five singles
flights. Kelsey Hassevoort and Paula Silverman won 8-1 at
one doubles. Hassevoort won 6-0, 7-6 (3) at one singles while
Silverman won 6-3, 6-4 at two singles. Kalamazoo hosts Albion

conference match at Hope
The women's tennis team lost its first conference
match of the season, 6-3, at Hope on Tuesday, April 10. Hope
swept the doubles points to take a 3-0 lead before the teams
split the six singles matches. Kelsey Hassevoort won 2-6,
7-6(5), 10-8 at No. 1 singles while Paula Silverman (No. 2)
and Kelsey Moran (No. 3) also won in singles. The Hornets
return to action at Alma on Saturday, April 14 at 1 p.m. Results

MIAA Women's Tennis Player of the Week
Kelsey Hassevoort was selected as the MIAA
Women's Tennis Player of the Week on Monday, April 9. A senior
from Kalamazoo (Loy Norrix HS), Hassevoort won both of her
matches last week in leading the Hornets to an MIAA victory
over Trine. At No. 1 singles, she won a three-set battle with
the Thunder’s Jessica Huhnke, 6-3, 1-6, 10-8, handing
Huhnke her first loss of the year. She also teamed up with
Paula Silverman for an 8-4 win at No. 1 doubles. Hassevoort
is being honored as Player of the Week for the first time
in her career.

The women's tennis team lost 9-0 to Case Western
on Saturday, April 7. The Hornets return to league play with
a match at Hope on Tuesday, April 10 at 4 p.m. Results

Allegheny, Oberlin
The women's tennis team lost 6-3 to Allegheny
on Friday, April 6 at Oberlin College. Allegheny swept the
three doubles points, including 9-8 wins at two and three
doubles. Kelsey Hassevoort won 7-6(1), 6-2 at one singles
while Kelsey Moran (No. 3) Carrie Foura (No. 6) also won in
singles. Kalamazoo was defeated 9-0 by Oberlin Friday evening.
Kelsey Hassevoort had the closest match, falling 6-2, 7-5
at one singles. The Hornets return to action with a match
against Case Western at 9 a.m. on Saturday at Oberlin. Allegheny

The women's tennis team improved to 2-0 in
the MIAA with a 9-0 win at Trine on Wednesday, April 4. Kalamazoo
swept the three doubles points before winning all six singles

one doubles. Hassevoort won 6-3, 1-6, (10-8) at one singles
while Silverman won 7-5, 7-6(5) at two singles. The Hornets

Calvin for 5-4 win
The women's tennis team defeated Calvin 5-4
at home in the MIAA opener on Saturday, March 31. Kalamazoo
led 2-1 after doubles before winning three singles matches
to earn the win. Kelsey Moran clinched the victory with a
7-6(0), 6-0 win at three singles. Kelsey Hassevoort and Paula
Silverman won in straight sets and one and two singles, respectively.
Hassevoort and Silverman also won 8-2 at one doubles while
Moran and Olivia Bouchard won 8-3 at two doubles. Kalamazoo

The women's tennis team wrapped up its spring
trip with a 9-0 loss at #14 Pomona-Pitzer on Thursday, March
22. Pomona-Pitzer swept the three doubles points before winning
all six singles flights in straight sets. The Hornets return
home and open MIAA play against Calvin on Saturday, March
31 at 1 p.m. Results
Women's Tennis defeated
at Occidental
The women's tennis team lost 6-3 at Occidental
Wednesday night. Occidental swept the three doubles points
and completed the win with victories at three, four and five
singles. Two doubles matches were particularly close with
Kelsey Hassevoort/Paula Silverman falling 9-8(4) at one doubles
and Jenna Riehl/Cheryl Zhang losing 9-8(5) at three doubles.
Hassevoort won 6-1, 3-6, 6-3 at one singles while Silverman
won 6-3, 6-4 at two singles. Carrie Foura won 2-6, 6-4, 10-4
at six singles. The Hornets play their final match of the
spring trip at Pomona-Pitzer on Thursday. Results

The women's tennis team lost 9-0 at Whittier
College on Monday, March 19. Kelsey Hassevoort played to three
sets at one singles, but was defeated 2-6, 6-2, 6-1. The Hornets

Women's Tennis defeated
at home by Wheaton
The Kalamazoo College women's tennis team
was defeated 7-2 at home by Wheaton College (Ill.) on Saturday,
Feb. 18. Wheaton entered the match ranked No. 8 in the central
region while Kalamazoo came in at No. 21. Wheaton held a 2-1
lead after wins at one and three doubles. Kalamazoo's Kelsey
Moran and Olivia Bouchard won 8-6 at two doubles. Wheaton
proceeded to win five of the six singles flights, including
a three-set win at two singles. Kelsey Moran earned a 7-5,
6-3 win at three singles for the Hornets. Kalamazoo is now
idle until its spring trip in Los Angeles on March 19. Results

The women's tennis team lost 7-0 at Valparaiso
University on Saturday, Feb. 11. Caroline Foura and Paula
Silverman won 8-6 at three doubles, but Valparaiso's wins
at one and two doubles claimed the lone doubles point. The
host Crusaders proceeded to win all six singles matches. Kalamazoo
returns home to face Wheaton College next Saturday, Feb. 18

The women's tennis team lost 7-0 to Division
I Western Michigan University on Sunday, Feb. 5. Western swept
the three doubles matches to earn the doubles point before
winning all six singles matches in straight sets. Kelsey Hassevoort
and Paula Silverman battled Western in an 8-3 loss at one
doubles. Kalamazoo returns to action at Valparaiso on Saturday,

Women's Tennis edged 5-4
by Kenyon
The women's tennis team lost 5-4 to Kenyon
in a key regional matchup on Saturday, Feb. 4 in the Markin
Center. Kenyon entered the match ranked 12th in the Central
Region while the Hornets came in at number 21. Kalamazoo took
a 3-0 lead by sweeping the doubles points, capped off by a
9-8(5) win by Jenna Riehl and Cheryl Zhang at three doubles.
Kelsey Hassevoort and Paula Silverman won 8-6 at one doubles
while Kelsey Moran and Olivia Bouchard won 8-5 at two doubles.
Kenyon evened the score at 3-3 with straight set wins at one,
two and three singles. Kalamazoo made it 4-3 with Jenna Riehl's
6-3, 4-6, 6-2 win at four singles. Kenyon evened the score
again at 4-4 with a 7-5, 6-0 win at six singles, setting up
the final point at five singles. After dropping the first
set 6-4, Kalamazoo's Olivia Bouchard fought back to take the
second set 7-6(5), but Kenyon's Stephanie White won the final
set 6-3 to earn the final team point and win the match for
the visiting Kenyon Ladies (1-0). Kalamazoo returns to action
with a match at Western Michigan University on Sunday, Feb.

opener to #4 Chicago
The women's tennis team lost its season opener
9-0 to #4 Chicago on Sunday, Jan. 29. Kelsey Hassevoort lost
6-2, 6-3 to the region's top ranked player at one singles.
Hassevoort and Paula Silverman lost 8-2 at one singles. Kelsey
Moran and Olivia Bouchard battled to an 8-5 loss at two doubles.
Kalamazoo returns to action next Saturday, Feb. 4 with a 2
p.m. home match against Kenyon. Results
Women's Tennis to participate
in Campus Kids Day
The Kalamazoo College women's tennis team
will partner with the Western Michigan University women's
tennis team to host a Campus Kids Day on Sunday, Feb. 5 at
West Hills Athletic Club. The event is open to children in
grades K-8 and includes free pizza and prizes. The event runs
from 4-5:30 p.m. and gives children the opportunity to "serve
it up" with the varsity women's tennis athletes from
WMU and Kalamazoo College. There is no charge for the event
and everyone is encouraged to stay for the varsity women's
tennis match between WMU and Kalamazoo College at 6 p.m. Kids
Day participants are asked to RSVP to Shelly Tansley at WMU.

Women's Tennis tournament
concludes at Kalamazoo College
The 2011 USTA/ITA Division III Women's Central
Regional Championships was hosted by Kalamazoo College Sept.
30-Oct. 2. Kelsey Hassevoort and Paula Silverman advanced
to the quarterfinals of the ITA Singles Consolation bracket
on Sunday, but both players were defeated in straight sets.
In the Kzoo Open Doubles Consolation bracket, Olivia Bouchard
and Kristen Ellefson advanced to the Saturday quarterfinals
before falling 8-1 to North Central. Highlights for Kalamazoo
in doubles play on Friday included an 8-2 win in the Kzoo
Open by Kelsey Moran/Jenna Riehl. In the USTA/ITA singles
first round, Jenna Riehl defeated Tiffany Nguyen (Chicago)
6-2, 6-1. Carrie Foura defeated Emily Fuller (Oberlin) 6-1,
6-2 in the first round of the Kzoo Open singles. Complete

2011 ITA Regional Championship
Kalamazoo College will host the 2011 ITA Division
III Central Regional Championship Sept. 30-Oct. 2. Matches
will be held at Kalamazoo College's Stowe Stadium as well

Four Women's Tennis players
earn ITA All-Academic honors
Four members of the Kalamazoo College women's
tennis team were named Scholar Athletes by the Intercollegiate
Tennis Association (ITA) for the 2011 season. Monika Egerer,
Kate Farwell, Kelsey Hassevoort, and Kari Larson each earned
the award by earning a varsity letter in tennis and carrying
at least a 3.5 grade point average for the 2010-11 academic
year.
Kalamazoo College
selected to host 2013 NCAA III Tennis Championships
Kalamazoo
College has been selected to host the 2013 NCAA Division III Men's
and Women's Tennis Championships. The announcement was made official
by the NCAA on Friday, June 25. Kalamazoo's Stowe Stadium will
be the official site of the tournaments.
Kalamazoo has hosted the men's national championships five times,
most recently in 2000. Kalamazoo has hosted the women's championships
seven times, most recently in 2005. This is the first time Kalamazoo
will host both tournaments simultaneously. |
