Jackie Short earns All-Region honors
Jackie Short, a junior from Troy (Athens HS), was selected to the All-Central Region Second Team as presented by the NSCAA (National Soccer Coaches Association of America) on Saturday, Dec. 10. Short was the Hornets' leading scorer and earned All-MIAA First Team honors as the league's second leading scorer, recording 19 goals and two assists in conference play for a total of 40 points. Short scored against every MIAA opponent and also tied the school record for scoring in consecutive matches by recording a goal in six straight games. Twice during the season Short was honored as the MIAA Offensive Player of the Week and also finished the season ranked second nationally in game winning goals with eight.

Jackie Short finishes second in the nation in game-winning goals
The final 2011 Division III women's soccer statistics were released by the NCAA on Monday, Dec. 5, and Kalamazoo's Jackie Short was among the national leaders in several categories. Short was second in the country in game-winning goals (8), 21st in total goals (19), 38th in total points (41) and goals per game (.905), and 56th in points per game (1.95). Short earned All-MIAA first team honors for the second straight season while helping Kalamazoo to an overall record of 13-7-1 and third place finish in the MIAA.

Four Women's Soccer players earn All-MIAA honors
Four members of the Kalamazoo College women’s soccer team were honored with All-MIAA recognition for their performances during the 2011 season. Jackie Short and Jordan Meeth were honored with All-MIAA First Team honors while Megan Martinez and Rachel Pitzer received All-MIAA Second Team Honors.

Jackie Short, a junior from Troy (Athens HS), was named All-MIAA First Team for the second straight season. She was the team’s leading scorer and league’s second leading scorer, recording 19 goals and two assists in conference play for a total of 40 points. Short scored against every MIAA opponent and also tied the school record for scoring in consecutive matches by recording a goal in six straight games. Twice during the season Short was honored as the MIAA Offensive Player of the Week and also finished the season ranked second nationally in game winning goals with eight. Jordan Meeth, a sophomore from Three Rivers (Three Rivers HS), started every game at centerback for the Hornets. Meeth was recognized by the league coaches for her strong individual defending and played a major role in a defensive unit that led the league in shutouts (8). She also recorded one assist in league play.

Rachel Pitzer, a senior from Brighton (Brighton HS), and Megan Martinez, a junior from Golden, Colo. (Golden HS), were both named to the All-MIAA Second Team. Martinez was honored with second team accolades for the second straight season. Her ability to control the tempo of a game with her relentless defensive work in the midfield has been a major reason for the team’s success the past several years. Pitzer was a member of the Kalamazoo backline starting 15 of 16 league contests at outside back. During week seven of league play she was named the MIAA Defensive Player of the Week. She also contributed to the Hornet offense, scoring one goal and leading the team in assists with six, all in league play. Pitzer is an all-conference honoree for the first time in her career.

Each player was a contributor to a Kalamazoo squad that finished 13-7-1 overall, the program's most wins in a season since 2001. The team finished third in the MIAA with a record of 12-4 and made a conference tournament semifinal appearance for the third straight season.

Women's Soccer defeated 2-1 in MIAA Tournament Semifinals
The women's soccer team lost 2-1 at Alma in the semifinals of the MIAA Tournament on Thursday, Nov. 3. Alma hosted the contest as the #2 seed while the Hornets entered the tournament as the #3 seed. Alma scored goals in the 15th and 22nd minutes and took a 2-0 lead into halftime. Jackie Short scored Kalamazoo's only goal in the 68th minute (Rachel Pitzer assist). Alma outshot Kalamazoo 13-12 overall, but each team had six shots on goal. Alma outshot Kalamazoo 8-3 in the first half, but Kalamazoo outshot Alma 9-5 in the second half. Box Score

Women's Soccer wins at Calvin
The women's soccer team won 2-0 at Calvin on Tuesday, Nov. 1. Jackie Short scored both goals as the Hornets secured a spot as the #3 seed in Thursday's MIAA Tournament semifinals. Short scored the first goal in the 17th minute after stealing the ball from a Calvin player. She scored the second goal with a shot from inside the box in the 64th minute (Maria Rich assist). Calvin outshot Kalamazoo 15-13 overall, although each team had five shots on goal. Courtney McCoy earned the shutout in goal with four saves. Kalamazoo is scheduled to travel to #2 seed Alma for the semifinals on Thursday, Nov. 3 at 3 p.m. Box Score

Women's Soccer defeats Trine in overtime
The women's soccer team defeated Trine 3-2 in overtime on Wednesday, Oct. 28. Trine scored the game's first goal in the 17th minute and took a 1-0 lead into halftime. Jackie Short scored in the 54th minute to tie the score at 1-1 (Rachel Pitzer assist). Trine went ahead 2-1 with a goal at 58:29, but the Hornets tied the score at 2-2 just 30 seconds later with a goal by Maria Rich (Jackie Short assist). The score remained tied 2-2 after 90 minutes of regulation. Rachel Pitzer then scored the game-winner 3:16 into the overtime period (Stephanie Verbeek assist). Kalamazoo outshot Trine 26-6 overall, including 11-5 on goal. Kalamazoo improved to 12-6-1 overall (11-4-0 MIAA) with the win. The Hornets are off on Saturday and play their final regular season game next Tuesday, Nov. 1 at Calvin. Box Score

Short, Gateley named MIAA Women's Soccer Players of the Week
Jackie Short and Jenn Gateley were selected as MIAA Women's Soccer Players of the Week on Monday, Oct. 24.

Short, a junior from Troy (Athens HS), was named MIAA Offensive Player of the Week. Short scored three goals, including two game-winners, as the Hornets won all three of their games for the week. She scored twice in a 5-1 victory over Albion and scored the game’s only goal in a 1-0 win over defending MIAA champion Alma. Short is being honored as Player of the Week for second time this season and third time in her career.

Gateley, a senior from Livonia (Stevenson HS), was named MIAA Defensive Player of the Week. Gateley anchored a Hornet defense that allowed just one goal in three games for the week and posted two shutouts. Her efforts led to shutout wins over Saint Mary’s, 2-0, and Alma, 1-0. Gateley is being honored as Player of the Week for the first time in her career.

Women's Soccer defeats Alma 1-0
The women's soccer team defeated Alma 1-0 at home on Saturday, Oct. 22, handing the visiting Scots just their third loss of the season. After a scoreless first half, Jackie Short scored the game-winning goal in the 55th minute (Rachel Pitzer assist). Kalamazoo held a slight advantage in shots (14-13), including 8-7 on goal. Courtney McCoy made seven saves in goal for the shutout. Kalamazoo enters the final week of the regular season in fourth place in the MIAA. The Hornets host Trine on Wednesday, Oct. 26 at 4 p.m. before traveling to Calvin on Saturday. Box Score

Women's Soccer defeats Saint Mary's
The women's soccer team defeated Saint Mary's 2-0 at home on Thursday, Oct. 20. C.J. McCarthy scored the Hornets' first goal in the 41st minute on a lengthy shot through the wind and rain that carried just over the Belles' goalkeeper. Jordan Meeth had the assist. Rachel Dandar gave the Hornets a 2-0 lead with a goal in the 62nd minute (Maria Rich assist). Kalamazoo outshot Saint Mary's 27-8 overall, including 14-6 on goal. Courtney McCoy made six saves in goal to earn the shutout. Kalamazoo faces Alma at 3 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 22 at the Kalamazoo Community Soccer Complex. Box Score

Women's Soccer wins 5-1 at Albion
The women's soccer team had its highest offensive output of the season with a 5-1 win at Albion on Tuesday, Oct. 18. Jackie Short started the scoring with a goal just over a minute into the contest (Maria Rich assist). Short scored her second goal in the 16th minute. Stephanie Verbeek made it 3-0 with a goal in the 22nd minute (Maria Rich assist), and the Hornets took a 4-0 lead into halftime with a goal from Bjargey Olafsson in the 31st minute (C.J. McCarthy, Julia Schroeder assists). Verbeek scored her second goal of the game in the 53rd minute to give Kalamazoo a 5-0 lead (Rachel Dandar assist). Albion avoided the shutout with a goal in the 80th minute. Kalamazoo outshot Albion 19-3 overall, including 11-3 on goal. Courtney McCoy and Meredith Miles split time in goal for the Hornets (9-6-1, 8-4 MIAA). Kalamazoo returns home to face Saint Mary's on Thursday, Oct. 20 at 4 p.m. at the Kalamazoo Community Soccer Complex. Box Score

Rachel Pitzer named MIAA Women's Soccer Player of the Week
Rachel Pitzer, a senior from Brighton (Brighton HS), was selected as the MIAA Women's Soccer Defensive Player of the Week on Monday, Oct. 17. Pitzer played every minute of both games as the Hornets posted shutout wins over Adrian, 1-0, and Olivet, 3-0. She also assisted on the game’s first goal against the Comets. Pitzer is being honored as Player of the Week for the first time in her career.

Women's Soccer wins 3-0 at Olivet
The women's soccer team won 3-0 at Olivet on Saturday, Oct. 15. Jackie Short scored Kalamazoo's first goal in the 13th minute (Rachel Pitzer assist). After taking a 1-0 lead into halftime, Maria Rich scored in the 59th minute (Stephanie Verbeek assist) and Sam Voss added a goal in the 83rd minute (Megan Burns assist). Courtney McCoy earned the shutout in goal. Kalamazoo outshot Olivet 15-1, including 13-0 on goal. The Hornets (7-4 MIAA) travel next to Albion on Tuesday, Oct. 18 at 4 p.m. Box Score

Women's Soccer defeats Adrian 1-0
The women's soccer team defeated league-leading Adrian 1-0 at home on Wednesday, Oct. 12. Despite several quality scoring opportunities for both teams, the game was scoreless through 84 minutes before Kalamazoo's Jackie Short scored in the 85th minute (Stephanie Verbeek assist). Kalamazoo outshot Adrian 19-12 overall, including 9-6 on goal. Courtney McCoy made six saves in goal to earn the shutout. Kalamazoo improved to 6-4 in the MIAA with the win while defeating Adrian (10-4, 8-2 MIAA) for the second time this season. Kalamazoo returns to action at Olivet on Saturday, Oct. 15 at noon. Women's Soccer falls 4-2 at Hope
The women's soccer team lost 4-2 at Hope on Saturday, Oct. 8. Hope scored its first goal early in the fifth minute. Kalamazoo's Jackie Short evened the score with a goal just 56 seconds later (Jenna Sexton assist). Hope scored its second goal in the 26th minute, but Kalamazoo tied it up again in the 39th minute with a goal by Bjargey Olafsson. The 2-2 tie held through halftime and into the 56th minute when Hope scored again. The Flying Dutch added a fourth goal in the 85th minute. Hope outshot Kalamazoo 18-14, although the Hornets held an 8-7 edge in shots on goal. Kalamazoo returns home to face Adrian on Wednesday, Oct. 12 at 4 p.m. Box Score

Women's Soccer defeated by Calvin
The women's soccer team lost 4-1 at home to Calvin on Thursday, Oct. 6. Calvin scored its first goal in the 33rd minute, but Kalamazoo evened the score just over three minutes later with a goal by Alex Groffsky (Maria Rich assist). After a 1-1 tie at halftime, Calvin went ahead with a goal in the 56th minute before adding goals in the 76th and 89th minutes. The visiting Knights outshot Kalamazoo 15-4, including 10-3 on goal. The Hornets start the second round of MIAA play with a match at Hope on Saturday, Oct. 8 at noon. Box Score

Women's Soccer plays Wheaton to 0-0 tie
The women's soccer team battled Wheaton to a 0-0 tie on Monday, Oct. 3. The host Thunder entered the game with a 10-0 record and ranked #2 in the D3soccer.com poll and #3 in the NSCAA (National Soccer Coaches Association of America) poll. Wheaton outshot Kalamazoo 31-2 in the match, including 8-2 on goal. Meredith Miles played 45 minutes in goal and made four saves for Kalamazoo. Courtney McCoy played the second half and 20 minutes of overtime and made three saves. Kalamazoo (6-4-1) returns to MIAA action with a home game against Calvin on Thursday, Oct. 6 at 4 p.m. at the Kalamazoo Community Soccer Complex. Box Score

Women's Soccer wins 2-0 at Saint Mary's
The women's soccer team used two first half goals in a 2-0 win at Saint Mary's on Saturday, Oct. 1. Jackie Short scored in the 21st minute (Sam Voss) while Maria Rich scored in the 39th minute. Kalamazoo outshot Saint Mary's 17-14, including 7-4 on goal. Courtney McCoy and Meredith Miles combined for the shutout in goal. Kalamazoo returns to action with a non-conference match at Wheaton College on Monday, Oct. 3 at 7 p.m. CT. Box Score

Women's Soccer loses first place showdown
In a battle of first place teams in the MIAA, the Kalamazoo College women's soccer team lost 4-2 at Alma on Wednesday, Sept. 28. Alma scored just 15 seconds into the contest and added a second goal in the 17th minute to take a 2-0 lead into halftime. Jackie Short scored in the 74th minute (Stephanie Verbeek assist) and then tied the game at 2-2 with a goal in the 78th minute. The Scots rallied back and took the lead in the 81st minute before adding a fourth goal in the 86th minute. Each team had 14 shots with Alma holding a 10-7 edge in shots on goal. Kalamazoo (5-4, 4-2 MIAA) returns to action at Saint Mary's on Saturday, Oct. 1 at 12 p.m. Box Score

Jackie Short named MIAA Women's Soccer Offensive Player of the Week
Jackie Short, a junior from Troy (Athens HS), was selected as the MIAA Women's Soccer Offensive Player of the Week on Monday, Sept. 26. Short scored a goal in each game as the Hornets won three straight MIAA games to move into a share of first place in the conference race. She scored the game’s only goal in a 1-0 win over Adrian and a 1-0 overtime victory over Trine. Short is being honored as Player of the Week for the first time this season and second time in her career.

Women's Soccer wins 1-0 in overtime at Trine
The women's soccer team won 1-0 in overtime at Trine on Saturday, Sept. 24. After 90 minutes of scoreless play, Jackie Short scored the game-winner five minutes into overtime (Rachel Pitzer, Julia Schroeder assists). Kalamazoo held a 14-9 advantage in shots, including 10-8 on goal. Courtney McCoy and Meredith Miles combined for the shutout. Kalamazoo returns to action at Alma on Wednesday, Sept. 28 at 4 p.m. Box Score

Women's Soccer defeats Olivet
The women's soccer team defeated Olivet 2-1 at home on Thursday, Sept. 22. After a scoreless first half, Kalamazoo scored twice in the first seven minutes of the second half. Jackie Short scored in the 48th minute (Julia Schroeder assist) followed by Stephanie Verbeek in the 52nd minute (Jenna Sexton assist). Olivet scored its only goal in the 73rd minute. Kalamazoo outshot Olivet 25-5 overall, including 12-5 on goal. Kalamazoo returns to action this Saturday, Sept. 24 at Trine at noon. Box Score

The women's soccer team won 1-0 at Adrian on Tuesday, Sept. 20. Jackie Short scored the game's only goal in the 51st minute (Rachel Pitzer assist). Adrian outshot Kalamazoo 14-6, including 7-2 on goal. Meredith Miles and Courtney McCoy combined for seven saves in goal. Women's Soccer defeats Albion 4-3 in overtime
Jackie Short scores three goals and assists on game-winner
The women's soccer team defeated Albion 4-3 in overtime on Saturday, Sept. 17. Albion led 1-0 at halftime following a goal in the 44th minute. Kalamazoo's Jackie Short evened the score and quickly took the lead with back-to-back goals in the 48th and 50th minutes (Julia Schroeder and Bronte Payne assists). Albion made it 2-2 with a goal in the 64th minute. Kalamazoo pulled ahead 3-2 in the 78th minute with Jackie Short's third goal of the game. Albion managed to tie it up at 3-3 with just 58 seconds left in regulation to send the game to overtime. The Hornets' Jenna Sexton scored the game-winner nearly six minutes into overtime (Jackie Short assist). The Hornets outshot Albion 35-3, including 17-3 on goal, with all three of the Britons shot attempts converting into goals. Women's Soccer drops MIAA opener
The women's soccer team lost its MIAA opener 1-0 to Hope on Wednesday, Sept. 14. After a scoreless first half, Hope scored the game's only goal in the 69th minute. The Hornets held a 15-10 advantage in shots, including 7-5 on goal. Kalamazoo returns to action this Saturday, Sept. 17 at 3 p.m. against Albion at the Kalamazoo Community Soccer Complex. Box Score

Women's Soccer falls to Kenyon
The women's soccer team lost 4-1 to Kenyon College at Alma on Saturday, Sept. 10. Kenyon led 3-0 at halftime and 4-0 late in the contest before Stephanie Verbeek scored the Hornets' only goal in the 84th minute. Kalamazoo outshot Kenyon 21-13 overall, although each team had seven shots on goal. Women's Soccer wins 1-0 at Elmhurst
The women's soccer team won 1-0 at Elmhurst on Sunday, Sept. 4. Jordan Lewis scored the game-winner in the 83rd minute with an assist from Jackie Short. Each team had seven shots in the game with Kalamazoo holding a 3-2 edge in shots on goal. Courtney McCoy and Meredith Miles each had a save and combined for the shutout. Kalamazoo returns to action with a match against Kenyon (at Alma) next Saturday, Sept. 10. Box Score

Women's Soccer falls in opener at #20 Chicago
The women's soccer team lost the 2011 season opener 2-0 at #20 University of Chicago on Thursday, Sept. 1. The teams were scoreless through the first half and ten minutes into the second half before Chicago scored its first goal in the 56th minute. The Maroons added their second goal in the 87th minute. Chicago outshot Kalamazoo 6-2 in the first half, but finished the game with a 16-5 advantage in shots and 10-1 in corner kicks. The Hornets return to action on Sunday with a 1 p.m. CT match at Elmhurst (Ill.) College. Box Score

Venues set for fall football and soccer home contests
With construction and renovation of the Kalamazoo College atheltic fields well underway, the Hornet football and soccer teams will play their home games off-site this fall.

The football team will play all five of its home games at Western Michigan University's Waldo Stadium. The move to Waldo Stadium prompted some adjustments in the home schedule. The home opener on Sept. 17 against Rose-Hulman is now scheduled for 7 p.m. That game will follow Western's 12 p.m. contest against Central Michigan. The other significant change involves the last home game (vs. Alma) which has been moved to Friday night, Oct. 28 at 7 p.m. The three other home Saturday games remain scheduled for 1 p.m. Be sure to view the full football schedule to confirm all dates and times. Additional details regarding admission and parking will be posted closer to the first home game.

The men's and women's soccer teams will play their home games at the Kalamazoo Community Soccer Complex, 901 South Drake Road, Kalamazoo, MI, 49009, approximately four miles west of campus. Weekday start times were unchanged, however all Saturday home games are now scheduled to start at 3 p.m. Please check the men's soccer schedule and women's soccer schedule to confirm all dates and times.

The Hornets will return home to brand new facilities next fall. The football and soccer fields will have artificial turf along with new scoreboards, bleachers, press boxes, and a new fieldhouse for locker rooms and athletic training facilities.

The baseball and softball teams will also play off-site this spring. Details regarding those sites will be posted closer to the season.

Women's Soccer picked third in MIAA Preseason poll
The Kalamazoo College Women's Soccer team was picked to finish third in the MIAA this season according to the MIAA Preseason Coaches' Poll released Tuesday, Aug. 23. Kalamazoo finished third last season with a 5-2-1 league record.

Four Women's Soccer players earn All-MIAA honors
Four Kalamazoo College women’s soccer players were honored by the MIAA for their play during the 2010 season. Jackie Short and Maya Smolcic received All-MIAA First Team honors while Megan Burns and Megan Martinez were named to the All-MIAA Second Team.

Jackie Short, a sophomore from Troy (Athens HS) who earned second team honors last season, was third in the MIAA with seven goals while tying for third in the league in total points (15). Short recorded a hat trick against Albion in the first round of the MIAA Tournament and was named MIAA Offensive Player of the Week for week nine. She ended the season with 31 total points overall, including 15 goals and one assist. The 15 goals are the most goals scored by a Hornet in a single season since 2001. Maya Smolcic, a sophomore from Troy (Troy HS) who saw time at both midfield and forward during the season, tallied one goal and three assists in league play. A repeat selection to the All-MIAA First Team, Smolcic recorded the second highest point total on the team with two goals and four assists for eight total points.

Megan Martinez and Megan Burns received second team All-MIAA honores for their defensive work. Martinez, a sophomore from Golden, CO (Golden HS), started every game at the holding midfield position and became known for her ability to win air balls and break the rhythm of opposing teams' attack. She was named MIAA Defensive Player of the Week for week one of the season. Burns, a sophomore outside back from Novi (Novi HS), was one of the top defenders in the league and would often spark Hornet offense with attacking runs out of the back. She recorded one assist in league play. Both Burns and Martinez are first time all-conference honorees. All four provided major contributions that led to Kalamazoo finishing third in the MIAA (5-2-1) while finishing with an overall record of 9-8-2 and an appearance in the MIAA Tournament semifinals.
