Women's Soccer announces coaching transition

April 12 - Laura (Whiteley) Passage ’96 announced her resignation as the head women’s soccer coach at Kalamazoo College on Friday, April 11. Passage is replaced as head coach by fellow Kalamazoo College alumnus Bryan Goyings ’04, who has served as Passage's assistant coach for the past two seasons. Goyings becomes the eleventh coach in the 26-year history of the Kalamazoo College women’s soccer program.
“I am thrilled to take over the women’s soccer program at this time,” Goyings said. “In the past three seasons Coach Passage has done a great job bringing the program back to where it should be, consistently competing for the MIAA title and an NCAA tournament berth. I learned an immense amount from Coach Passage and plan to maintain and build on the standard she has set on the playing field, in the community, and most importantly, in the classroom.”
Kelly Lepper earns D3kicks.com All-Region honors
Kalamazoo College's Kelly Lepper was selected to the D3kicks.com Great Lakes Region Third Team for the 2007 season. A junior midfielder from Plymouth (Salem HS),
Lepper finished third on the team in scoring in
2007 with seven goals and six assists for 20 points overall (3
goals, 3 assists, 9 points MIAA). Lepper was also named to the All-MIAA first team for the second straight year. She also holds the Kalamazoo
College record for most assists in a game, after posting five
assists in one game during the 2006 season.
Four Women's Soccer
Players earn All-MIAA honors
Four Kalamazoo College women's soccer players have earned All-MIAA
honors for the 2007 season. Monisha Berkowski, Aliza Caplan, and
Kelly Lepper have been selected to the All-MIAA First Team, while
Chelsea Smith has been selected to the All-MIAA Second Team.
Monisha Berkowski, a senior goalkeeper from
Dearborn Heights (Mercy HS), was selected to the first team for
the second time in her career. She was a first team pick during
her freshman campaign in 2004, and also earned second team honors
as a sophomore in 2005. Berkowski posted 58 saves and three shutouts
in her 18 games this fall, and earned a 1.12 goals against average.
She was the MIAA Defensive Player of the Week during week eight.
Berkowski also finishes her career at Kalamazoo as the school
record holder for most saves in a season, after posting 151 saves
in 2005. Aliza Caplan, a senior forward from
Huntington Woods (Berkley HS), was selected to the first team
after receiving All-MIAA honorable mention honors during each
of her first three campaigns. This fall, she led the Hornets in
scoring with 12 goals and eight assists for 32 points overall,
while also finishing as the MIAA's second leading scorer overall
with six goals and four assists for 16 points during the regular
season, as well as two additional goals and one assist during
the MIAA Tournament. She was the MIAA Offensive Player of the
Week twice in 2007, both in weeks eight and nine. Kelly
Lepper, a junior midfielder from Plymouth (Salem HS),
was also named to the All-MIAA First Team for the second straight
year. She also received All-MIAA honorable mention honors as a
freshman in 2005. She finished third on the team in scoring in
2007 with seven goals and six assists for 20 points overall (3
goals, 3 assists, 9 points MIAA). She also holds the Kalamazoo
College record for most assists in a game, after posting five
assists in one game last fall during the 2006 season.
Chelsea Smith, a freshman defender from Commerce
Township (Walled Lake Northern HS), was named to the All-MIAA
Second Team. In her rookie campaign, Smith led a Kalamazoo defense
that posted an overall 1.18 goals against average (GAA) for the
season and an impressive .950 GAA in MIAA play. She also posted
one assist from her defensive position.
Women's Soccer falls in MIAA Tournament Semifinal
The women's soccer team lost 2-0 to Albion in the semifinals of the MIAA Tournament on Tuesday, Oct. 30. Each team had 14 shots overall and eight shots on goal, but the Hornets were unable to slip any shots past the Britons' goalkeeper. Albion scored in the 15th minute of the first half and 15 minutes into the second half. Kelly Lepper led Kalamazoo's offense with three shots on goal. Monisha Berkowski made six saves in goal as the Hornets finish the season with a record of 11-5-2 (6-3-1 MIAA). Box Score
Aliza Caplan named MIAA Women's Soccer Player of the Week
Kalamazoo College senior forward Aliza Caplan of Huntington Woods (Berkley HS) is the MIAA Offensive Player of the Week for the second consecutive week. Last week she scored five goals and was credited with two assists in two games. She earned a hat-trick in a 9-0 win against Tri-State and followed with two goals as the Hornets defeated Adrian 3-1 in a first round game of the conference tournament.
Women's Soccer advances to MIAA Semifinals with win over Adrian
The women's soccer team defeated Adrian 3-1 on Saturday, Sept. 27 to advance to the MIAA Tournament Semifinals. Kalamazoo (#2) will host Albion (#3) on Tuesday at 3:30 p.m. In today's game, Kalamazoo's Aliza Caplan scored 3:34 into the game (Sarah Arnosky assist). Katie Manstrom made it 2-0 with a goal just 4:10 into the second half (Arnosky, Caplan assists). Adrian cut the lead to 2-1 with a goal in the 61st minute, but Aliza Caplan put the game out of reach with a goal in the 81st minute. Kalamazoo held a 25-6 advantage in shots (14-3 on goal). Women's Soccer finishes regular season
in second place with 9-0 win over Tri-State
The women's soccer team wrapped up the regular season with
a 9-0 win over Tri-State on Wednesday, Oct. 24. Aliza Caplan scored
the first of her three goals 3:14 into the game. She also had an assist.
Sarah Arnosky scored two goals with an assist. Katie Manstrom had
two assists. Kalamazoo held a 38-2 advantage in shots (23-0 on goal).
Monisha Berkowski and Jennie Smith split time in goal for the shutout.
Kalamazoo finished the regular season in a three-way tie for second
place with a 5-2-1 league record (10-4-2 overall). Kalamazoo holds
the tiebreaker over Albion and Hope and will be the #2 seed in the
MIAA Tournamnet beginning Saturday. Kalamazoo hosts #7 Adrian at noon.

MIAA Player of the Week awards
Kalamazoo College women's soccer players Aliza Caplan and Monisha
Berkowski have been selected as the MIAA Offensive and Defensive Players
of the Week, respectively. Caplan, a senior forward
from Huntington Woods, scored the game-winning goal and assisted on
the second goal in the Hornets' 2-0 shutout victory at Adrian. She
then followed this performance with a stellar offensive effort against
league-leading Calvin College in the Hornets' 1-0 double-overtime
loss to the Knights. Against Calvin, she played for 107 minutes without
a sub. Berkowski, a senior goalkeeper from Dearborn
Heights, earned a shared shutout at Adrian and then posted an impressive
10 saves in the Hornets' 1-0 overtime loss to league-leading Calvin.
She played 62 minutes in the Calvin game (2nd half plus all of OT),
making six saves in the seconnd half to send the game to OT, and then
making four more saves during the two OT periods. The only goal conceded
during the game was on a PK.
Women's Soccer unbeaten streak ends in overtime
The women's soccer team's six-game unbeated streak ended with a 1-0 overtime loss to league-leading Calvin on Saturday, Sept. 20. The teams battled to a scoreless tie after 90 minutes of regulation and another 10 minutes of overtime. With just 2:25 left to play, Calvin was awarded a penalty kick and was successful resulting in the overtime win for Calvin. Calvin held a 31-11 advantage in shots (15-6 on goal). Kassandra Johnston made four saves in goal in the first half. Monisha Berkowski made 10 saves in the second half and overtime. The women's soccer team plays its final regular season game on Wednesday against Tri-State at 4 p.m. Box Score
Women's Soccer wins 2-0 at Adrian
The women's soccer team won 2-0 at Adrian on Tuesday, Oct.
16. The win lifts the Hornets to 9-3-2 overall (4-1-1 MIAA). Aliza
Caplan scored the Hornets' first goal early in the second half (49:52).
Jaime Franks gave Kalamazoo some insurance with a goal at 73:43 (Caplan
assist). Kalamazoo held a 20-4 advantage in shots, including 18-2
in the second half. Monisha Berkowski and Kassandra Johnston each played a half in goal. Box Score
Women's Soccer battles Hope to 2-2 tie
The women's soccer team played Hope to a 2-2 tie on Saturday,
Oct. 13. After a scoreless first half, Hope scored the game's first
goal in the 63rd minute. Kelly Lepper tied the game for the Hornets
with a goal four minutes later (Jaime Franks assist). Kalamazoo took
a 2-1 lead with 5:42 left in the game following a Paige Howell goal
(Katie Manstrom assist), but Hope tied the game with 2:56 left to
play to send it to overtime. Neither team was able to score in the
20 minutes of overtime resulting in a 2-2 tie. Box

Women's Soccer moves into first place

The women's soccer team moved into a tie for first place in
the MIAA with a 1-0 win over Albion on Saturday, Oct. 6. The win gives
the Hornets nine points in the league standings and a first-place
tie with Calvin. Hope may also move into a tie for first place pending
their outcome on Saturday. Sarah Arnosky scored the game's only goal
at the 43:30 mark of the first half. Arnosky scored off a rebound
from Mara Beverwyk's shot off the crossbar. Kalamazoo held a 16-5
advantage in shots (8-1 on goal). Monisha Berkowski earned the shutout
with one save in goal. The Hornets are off until Oct. 13 when they
travel to Hope College. Box

Women's Soccer defeats Alma 4-2
The women's soccer team scored twice in the final seven minutes
to defeat Alma 4-2 on Tuesday, Oct. 2. Katie Manstrom scored her second
goal of the game at the 83:19 mark (Aliza Caplan assist) to break
a 2-2 tie. Sarah Arnosky put the game away with a goal with four seconds
left in the game (Caplan assist). Manstrom scored the game's first
goal in the 20th minute (Kelly Lepper assist). Lepper made it 2-0
with a goal in the 38th minute (Paige Howell assist). Alma made it
2-1 just before halftime and evened the score early in the second
half (51:14). Alma held a 14-12 advantage in total shots, but Kalamazoo
held a 7-5 edge in shots on goal. Monisha Berkowski made three saves
in goal for the Hornets. Box

Sarah Arnosky earns MIAA Player of the
Week honors
Sarah Arnosky, a junior forward from Midland (H.H. Dow HS),
was selected as the MIAA Women's Soccer Offensive Player of the Week.
Arnosky posted an assist on the Hornets' tying goal and then scored
the game-winning goal in a come-from-behind 2-1 victory over Olivet.
This is the second time Arnosky has been named player of the week
in her career.
Women's Soccer wins in overtime at Rochester
The women's soccer team won 2-1 in overtime at Rochester College
on Sunday, Sept. 30. Kelly Lepper got the Hornets on the board early
in the first half (Paige Howell assist). Sarah Arnosky scored the
game-winner in overtime at the 93:06 mark (Aliza Caplan assist). The
win lifts the Hornets to a 6-3-1 record overall. The Hornets return
home to host Alma College on Tuesday at 4 p.m.
Women's Soccer wins 2-1 at Olivet
Kalamazoo scored two second half goals to defeat Olivet 2-1
on Wednesday, Sept. 26. Olivet took a 1-0 lead with a goal in the
14th minute of the game. Aliza Caplan tied the game for Kalamazoo
with a goal early in the second half (49:52). Sarah Arnosky scored
the game-winner in the 58th minute (Kelly Lepper assist). Arnosky
had the assist on Kalamazoo's first goal. Kalamazoo held a 19-9 advantage
in shots. Monisha Berkowski made four saves in goal for the Hornets.

Women's Soccer falls at Saint Mary's
The women's soccer team lost 2-1 at Saint Mary's College on Saturday, Sept. 22. Kalamazoo took a 1-0 lead in the 28th minute of the game after a goal by Aliza Caplan. The Hornets maintained that lead until the 78th minute when Saint Mary's scored two times in just over two minutes to take the lead and the eventual final score. Saint Mary's held a 13-10 advantage in shots (8-5 on goal). The Hornets return to action on Wednesday at Olivet. Box Score
Women's Soccer suffers road loss at Aurora
The women's soccer team suffered just its second loss of the
season with a 3-0 loss at Aurora University (Ill.) on Thursday, Sept.
20. Kalamazoo (4-2-1) was outshot 24-7 in the match (15-4 shots on
goal). Aurora (5-2-1) scored its first goal in the 26th minute. Aurora
added goals in the 70th and 77th minutes. Kalamazoo opens MIAA play
on Saturday at Saint Mary's. Box

Women's Soccer battles Elmhurst to 1-1

The women's soccer team battled Elmhurst to a 1-1 tie on Friday,
Sept. 14 at MacKenzie Field. Elmhurst scored the first goal in the
21st minute. Kalamazoo tied the score with a goal by Paige Howell
in the 42nd minute. The entire second half and 20 minutes of overtime
finished without a goal. Kassie Johnston played the second half in
goal as well as the overtime period and made eight saves. Box

Women's Soccer suffers first loss at Rose-Hulman
The women's soccer team lost 4-1 at Rose-Hulman (Ind.) on
Wednesday, Sept. 12, marking the Hornets first loss of the season
(4-1). Kalamazoo got on the board first with a goal from Sarah Arnosky
in the 9th minute (Aliza Caplan assist). The Hornets held the 1-0
lead through halftime. Rose-Hulman (4-2) tied the game in the 54th
minute and proceeded to score four goals in a 17-minute span for the
4-1 win. Box

Women's Soccer defeats Defiance 5-1
The Kalamazoo College women's soccer team improved to 4-0 with
a 5-1 win over Defiance on Saturday, Sept. 8. Defiance took an early
lead, but Kalamazoo responded with two goals to take a 2-1 lead into
halftime. The Hornets scored twice in the second half and took advantage
of an own goal for the 5-1 win. Katie Manstrom, Aliza Caplan, Hilary
Marusak and Sarah Arnosky each scored for the Hornets. Kelly Lepper,
Arnosky and Marusak each had an assist. Box

The women's soccer team improved to 3-0 with a 2-0 win over
Huntington University (Ind.) in the Hornets' home-opener on Wednesday,
Sept. 5. Kelly Lepper got the Hornets on the board in the 28th minute
with a successful penalty kick. Aliza Caplan added insurance with
a goal in the 79th minute. Lepper had the assist. Monisha Berkowski
earned her second shutout of the season with three saves in goal.
Kalamazoo held a 24-5 advantage in shots (12-3 shots on goal). The
Hornets return to action on Saturday when they play the first game
of a Kalamazoo College soccer doubleheader. The women's team plays
Defiance at 1:00 and the Hornet men play at 3:30. Box

Smith earns MIAA Women's Soccer honors
Kalamazoo College women's soccer player Chelsea Smith (Commerce
Township/Walled Lake Northern HS) was selected as the season's first
MIAA Defensive Player of the Week. Chelsea showed superior leadership
ability when, as only a freshman, she stepped in to lead Kalamazoo's
back line in the first weekend of the season. Her play helped the
Hornets limit the opponents to only three shots on goal for the entire
weekend as Kalamazoo defeated Beloit 3-1 and blanked North Central
3-0.
Women's Soccer shuts out North Central
The women's soccer team improved to 2-0 on the season with
a 3-0 win over North Central College on Sunday, Sept. 2. The win marks
the first time in eight years (1999) that the Hornets have begun the
season with two consecutive wins.
Kalamazoo got first half goals from Katie Manstrom (32:33) and Kelly
Lepper (41:38). Lepper also scored an early second half goal (48:53)
to put the game well out of reach. Sarah Arnosky assisted Lepper's
first goal and Aliza Caplan had the assist on Lepper's second goal.
Monisha Berkowski earned the shutout in goal. Kalamazoo had a 16-6
advantage in shots (5-0 shots on goal). The Hornets play their home
opener against Huntington on Wednesday at 4:30 p.m.
Women's Soccer opens season with 3-1 win
The women's soccer team opened the 2007 season with a 3-1 win
over Beloit College on Saturday, Sept. 1 at the Hornet/Briton Classic
hosted by Albion. Sarah Arnosky scored a goal and Aliza Caplan scored
twice for the Hornets. Kelly Lepper and Arnosky each had an assist.
Women's Soccer Team Posts Highest Team GPA at Kalamazoo College for 06-07
The 2006 Kalamazoo College women's soccer team recently received the 2006-07 MIAA Team GPA Award, which is awarded by the Faculty-Athletic Representativesto of MIAA member colleges to any MIAA team that achieves a 3.300 or better grade point average for an entire academic year. The women's soccer team was one of seven Hornet teams to receive the award, and with a team GPA of 3.541 for the 2006-07 academic year, the women's soccer team actually posted the highest team GPA of any Kalamazoo College team.
Thirteen Hornet Women's Soccer Players Named to MIAA Academic Honor Roll
The MIAA recently released the Academic Honor Roll for 2006-07, and 13 players from the 2006 Hornet women's soccer team's 18-player roster were named to the Honor Roll. The academic Honor Roll consists of student-athletes who maintained a minimum 3.500 grade point average for the year. This year's honorees are as follows: Sarah Arnosky K'09 (Midland, MI), Anne Baldwin K'10 (Albuquerque, NM), Kari Brodsky K'07 (West Bloomfield, MI), Anja Burk K'10 (Saline, MI), Erin Dreps K'09 (Canton, MI), Jaime Franks K'10 (Chelsea, MI), Elizabeth Hauslein K'07 (Galesburg, IL), Paige Howell K'10 (Huntington Woods, MI), Kassie Johnston K'10 (Fort Wayne, IN), Stephanie Jones K'09 (Muncie, IN), Kristen Jost K'10 (Grosse Pointe Park, MI), Jenn Russart K'07 (West Bloomfield, MI), and Meryl Stout K'08 (Plainwell, MI).
Women's Soccer Releases 2007 Schedule
The 2007 Kalamazoo College women's soccer schedule is now complete
and available, and can be accessed online using the link to the left.
Single round-robin MIAA play makes a reappearance in 2007, as does
a post-season conference tournament to help determine the MIAA championship
and subsequent automatic NCAA tournament bid.
Women's Soccer players earn All-MIAA honors
Kalamazoo College women's soccer players Jenn Russart and Kelly
Lepper were selected to the 2006 All-MIAA First Team. Russart,
a senior defender from West Bloomfield (West Bloomfield HS), scored
one goal and keyed a defense that had a 1.20 goals against average
in league play. She was named MIAA Defensive Player of the Week in
week seven. Lepper,
a sophomore midfielder from Plymouth (Salem HS), scored one goal in
league play. On the season, Lepper scored nine goals with nine assists
and tied a school record with five assists in one game. She was named
MIAA Offensive Player of the Week in weeks four and eight.
Four players, Lizzy Hauslein, Aliza Caplan, Kari Brodsky and Kassie
Johnston earned coaches' honorable mention honors.
Women's
Soccer wins 300th game
With a 3-1 win over Adrian College on Tuesday,
Oct. 24th, the Kalamazoo College women's soccer team reached a milestone
with the program's 300th all-time victory. The women's soccer program
has a long history of success with a combined record of 300 wins with
only 123 losses and 27 ties, for a .697 winning percentage. The Hornets
have won eight MIAA championships and made six NCAA Division III tournament
appearances. Kalamazoo has produced eight MIAA Most Valuable Players
and 10 NCAA Division III All-Americans. The 2006 soccer team is currently
9-5-2 overall and 3-3-2 in the MIAA. |
