KALAMAZOO - The Kalamazoo College women's basketball team came within two points of ending a losing streak on Saturday. Unfortunately, it wasn't enough as Saint Mary's escaped with a 62-60 win.

The Belles led by as many as 12 points in the first half, and led by 12 points on three occasions in the second half, including a 58-46 lead with 5:27 left in the game. Kalamazoo went on a 10-0 run to cut the lead to two (58-56) with 2:16 left in the game. The teams exchanged baskets and Saint Mary's held a 61-58 lead entering the final minute. Saint Mary's missed a pair of free throws with 15 seconds left giving Kalamazoo a chance to tie the game, but the Hornets turned the ball over trying to advance into the frontcourt. The Belles sank 1-of-2 free throws with seven seconds left to put the game out of reach.

Saint Mary's led 32-22 at halftime after shooting 45.2 percent and holding Kalamazoo to just 29.6 percent. Saint Mary's finished the game at 35.4 percent as the Hornets improved to 43.4 percent. Saint Mary's outrebounded Kalamazoo 45-29, including 19-5 on the offensive end. That difference, along with two additional Kalamazoo turnovers (17-15), resulted in 12 extra shots for the Belles. Saint Mary's hit 15-of-19 free throws in the game while Kalamazoo sank 7-of-10.

Kelsea Howell led the Hornets with 18 points and five rebounds. Theres Demres scored 13 points. Sara Lappan, Kalamazoo's only senior, scored 11 points with five rebounds and three assists.

Saint Mary's was led by Bridget Lipke's 19 points and nine rebounds.

Kalamazoo finishes the regular season on the road next week, traveling to Tri-State on Wednesday and Olivet on Saturday.
