KALAMAZOO - The Kalamazoo College women's basketball team
lost 85-67 to nationally-ranked Calvin on Saturday. Calvin
entered the week ranked eighth by D3hoops.com and 10th in
the ESPN Coach's Poll.
Calvin shot 56 percent in the first half and led by 16 points
with 9:00 left in the first half. Kalamazoo cut the lead to
seven (35-28) with 4:25 left and entered halftime down nine
(42-33).
Calvin scored the first basket of the second half and maintained
at least a 10-point lead throughout the second half. The Knights
shot 57.1 percent from the field for the game while making
9-of-17 three-pointers (52.9%) and 12-of-13 free throws. Kalamazoo
shot well overall (42.9%) and made 5-of-11 three-pointers
(45.5%), but the Hornets could not match the hot-shooting
Knights. Calvin held a 31-28 rebounding edge and turned the
ball over 14 times. Kalamazoo committed a season-best 12 turnovers.
Kelsea Howell scored a career-high 22 points with eight rebounds
to lead the Hornets (3-14, 2-7). Nyemade Cooper matched her
career-high with 17 points. Therese Demres scored 12 points
with seven rebounds and Sara Lappan finished with 11 points
and four assists.
Calvin (15-1, 9-0) was led by Rachael Willett's 19 points
and six rebounds. Lisa Winkle scored 16 points with nine rebounds.
Marcia Harris scored 16 and Kristi Brummel finished with 15,
including 5-of-6 from three-point range.
Kalamazoo is on the road for its next to games. The Hornets
travel to Adrian on Wednesday and to Hope next Saturday.
