Women's Basketball Falls at Alma

ALMA - It came down to the wire, but the final score ended in favor of Alma College, 69-66, in the semi-finals of the MIAA Women's Basketball Tournament.

After a see-saw 10 minutes in the first half, Alma made a 19-10 run to close out the half with a 44-33 lead. The Hornets fought their way back in the second half and eventually tied the game at 62-62 with 3:18 left in the game. Kalamazoo took its first lead of the second half (64-63) with 2:20 remaining. Alma tied it 66-66 with two free throws by Janell Twietmeyer with 7.4 seconds left. The Hornets turned the ball over in the paint area trying to work the ball inside for two on their possession and quickly fouled. Shelly Ulfig hit one-of-two free throws to take a 69-66 lead with three-tenths of a second remaining. The Hornets threw the inbounds pass over half court but could not get a shot off.

MaryJane Valade led Kalamazoo with 21 points on 8-of-12 shooting. Amanda Weishuhn added 13 points and seven rebounds. Vanessa Larkin had a team-high eight assists.

Karen Hill led four Alma players in double figures with 12 points. Janell Twietmeyer scored 11 points with six rebounds. Shelly Ulfig scored 10 points with a team-high seven rebounds. Rebekah Downing added 10 points.

MaryJane Valade finishes her four-year career with 1,402 points.

Alma advances to the MIAA Championship on Saturday. Kalamazoo ends its season with a record of 18-8, matching last year's school record win total of 18-8.
