Women's Basketball Falls to DePauw

GREENCASTLE, Ind. - The Kalamazoo College women's basketball team suffered its first loss of the season as DePauw University won its own tournament championship by defeating the Hornets 65-53.

The Hornets were held to just 13 points in the first half and trailed 24-13 at the break. Both offenses stepped up in the second half as DePauw outscored Kalamazoo 41-40.

MaryJane Valade had 19 points and seven rebounds to lead Kalamazoo. Alissa Johnston added 12 points. Kelley Nyquist scored eight.

Sarah MacKay, the tournament MVP, led DePauw with 13 points and seven rebounds.

DePauw held a 34-31 rebounding advantage while forcing Kalamazoo into 21 turnovers. DePauw had only 14 turnovers. Kalamazoo shot 41.7 percent from the field, but only 20.0 percent from three-point range. DePauw connected on 38.5 percent of their attempts and hit 22-of-30 free throws.

Valade and Nyquist were selected to the all-tournament team.

Kalamazoo drops to 4-1 with the loss. DePauw improves to 5-2. The Hornets return to action at home on Wednesday, Dec. 13 when they face Savannah College of Art & Design at 7:30 p.m.
