Women's Basketball defeats Calvin

KALAMAZOO - The Kalamazoo College women's basketball team improved to 1-1 in the MIAA with a 65-42 victory over Calvin College at Anderson Athletic Center today.

The Hornets shot 40.4 percent from the field while holding the visiting Knights to just 28.9 percent shooting. Calvin struggled at the free throw line, converting on only 15-of-32 attempts (46.9%). Kalamazoo outrebounded Calvin, 41-34.

MaryJane Valade led all scorers with 16 points and five rebounds. Amanda Weishuhn scored 12 points with five rebounds. Lindsay Drury added 11 points and Vaness Larkin six for the Hornets. Alissa Johnston had a game-high seven assists.

Jennifer Plakmeyer led Calvin with 11 points. Tara Bergsma scored 10 points. Emily Beard and Mandy VanDenBosch each had seven rebounds.

Kalamazoo led 26-22 at halftime.

MaryJane Valade remains in fourth position on the career scoring list at Kalamazoo College. The senior guard now had 1,179 career points. She needs just 19 more points to take over the number three position. 

Kalamazoo (9-3, 1-1 MIAA) returns home to face Alma College on Wednesday at 7:30 p.m.
