Women's Basketball falls at Hope

HOLLAND - The Kalamazoo College women's basketball team has been to Hope College three times in the last six days. However, the only meeting between the two MIAA rivals resulted in a 69-67 victory for the Flying Dutch tonight.

Kalamazoo recovered from a 43-29 halftime deficit to take their only lead of the second half (66-65) on a three-pointer from Vanessa Larkin with 1:02 left to play. Hope responded with a basket and converted the three-point play to take a 68-66 lead. MaryJane Valade hit one-of-two free throws with 33 seconds left to cut the lead to one. Hope hit a free throw with five seconds left to seal the 69-67 victory.

MaryJane Valade had 23 points to lead all scorers along with eight rebounds. Vanessa Larkin added 13 points and six rebounds and Lindsay Drury scored 11 points.

Laura Poppema led Hope with 19 points and 13 rebounds. Amanda Kerkstra had 13 points and 11 rebounds. Jodi Boom added 10 points.

Kalamazoo shot 38.1 percent from the field while holding the Flying Dutch to 33.9 percent shooting. The teams combined for 5-30 from three-point range. Hope hit 28-of-33 (84.8%) free throws. Kalamazoo sunk only 15-of-26 (57.7%) of their free throws. Hope held a 48-36 rebounding advantage.

MaryJane Valade moved into fourth position on the career scoring list at Kalamazoo College. The senior guard now had 1,163 career points. She needs just 34 more points to move into third position. 

Kalamazoo (8-3, 0-1 MIAA) returns home to face Calvin College on Saturday at 3 p.m.
