Tes Sobomehin
Head Coach

Tes Sobomehin was named Kalamazoo College’s head women’s basketball coach on April 27, 2005.

Coach Sobomehin led Kalamazoo to an 81-71 victory over Marietta in her head coaching debut Nov. 18, 2005. The Hornets defeated Wis.-River Falls in the next game to claim the 2005 Hornet Tip-Off Tournament championship.

Sobomehin (pronounced So-bo-mé-hin), also known as “Coach Sobo,” came to Kalamazoo College from Oberlin College where she served as an assistant coach for two seasons. She also served as a Resident Director in the Department of Residential Education and as an instructor in Oberlin's Department of Health and Physical Education.

Sobomehin earned a bachelor’s degree in education and a master’s in teaching at the University of Virginia in 2000. Sobomehin served as head athletic manager for the Cavalier’s women’s basketball team while also playing small forward for the University’s club basketball team. Sobomehin graduated from Gary (Ind.) West Side High School, earning Northwest Indiana All-Star honors her senior year.

In addition to her collegiate and high school experience, Sobomehin worked as a community relations intern with the Detroit Shock of the WNBA. She also founded the CHALLENGE Premier Youth Girl’s Basketball Skills Clinics in Woodbridge, Va. Sobomehin Johnson has been a staff member at numerous summer camps, including those at Tennessee, Duke, Georgia Tech, Boston College, Virginia Commonwealth, Notre Dame, Wooster, Central Michigan and Virginia.

Coach Sobomehin was one of 25 coaches selected to participate in the 2006 NCAA Women Coaches Academy in Indianapolis. The academy offered a week of classes, seminars and training on various aspects of coaching and career development. In 2007, she completed the NCAA Women Coaches Academy Dimension 2. Coach Sobomehin is also a 2007 graduate of the Black Coaches Association A.C.E. Program. The A.C.E. Program provides instructional and developmental seminars/workshops that further the coaching skills and professional development of ethnic minority basketball coaches. Coach Sobomehin is a member of BCA (Black Coaches Association), WBCA (Women's Basketball Coaches Association), NACWA (National Association of Collegiate Women Administrators) and the BCAM (Basketball Coaches Association of Michigan).

 

 

 

 

   

Kenneth Robinson
Assistant Coach

Kenneth Robinson begins his first season as an assistant women's basketball coach in 2007-08.

Robinson played college basketball at Freed-Hardeman University in Henderson, Tenn. He graduated with a degree in social work in 1986. After graduation, he went on to work towards a master’s degree in sociology at Central Michigan University and a doctorate at Western Michigan University.

Robinson's coaching experience includes seven years as the boys' basketball varsity assistant coach at Portage Central High School and four years as the head junior varsity coach.

Robinson works as a mentor coordinator at the Betty Upjohn Community Healing Center. He lives in Kalamazoo with his wife, Chris, and their three children, Emily, Matthew and Garrett.

 
   

Kate VerseputKate Verseput
Assistant Coach

Kate Verseput begins her first season as assistant women’s basketball coach at Kalamazoo College after a successful playing career at Western Michigan University in Kalamazoo.

Verseput played three years at WMU (2002-05) and helped lead the Broncos to the 2003 NCAA Tournament and the 2004 Postseason WNIT Elite Eight. Verseput appeared in every game the Broncos played in during her three-year playing career, which was cut short due to injury. She started every game during the 2004-05 season.

A four-year letterwinner in soccer and basketball at Mason (Mich.) High School, Verseput was an All-State selection in both sports. She was also named to the Mid-Michigan All-Star Team in both sports all four seasons of her prep career.

No stranger to Kalamazoo College, Verseput’s older brother, Adam, played basketball for the Hornets and graduated in 2000.

Verseput earned a bachelor’s degree in health studies from Western Michigan in 2006, and is currently pursuing a master’s degree in community counseling at WMU. Since graduating, Verseput has been a graduate assistant in the WMU Bronco Athletic Department.
